As of 7:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, I have been up for 24 hours! I just couldn't fall asleep, last night! Insomnia as a side effect from the steroids I was given prior to the chemo! The first time it happened, I was unprepared and spent the majority of the night trying to fall asleep. But, this time, I was prepared. After I said goodnight to daughter a little after midnight, and didn't feel sleepy, I stayed up and played mahjong on the computer until after 2:00 a.m.
After that, I went to the bed and tried to fall asleep. No luck! So, at about 3:30 a.m., I gave up trying to sleep and came back to the living room and read a book. Last time, I managed to go to sleep around 5:30 a.m. and slept for a couple of hours. But not this time. Around 7:00 a.m., I realized that I won't fall asleep, after all, and drank a cup of tea, opened the drapes, fed the cat, etc.
At least I am at home and could take a nap later in the morning or in the afternoon, if I feel like it. It's not like I have to go into the office to work after staying up all night. So, I'm OK with it.
I had planned to tidy and clean the house, do some laundry, etc., today. Not sure how much I'll accomplish after not sleeping, but we'll see.
Grateful for:
- Electricity to power the computer and the lights so I could play games and read at night.
- Not having to be at the office, working, today, after being awake all night.
- Being at home where I could take naps during the day should I need to (which I probably will!)
- Learning all sorts of useful, if random, information, such as that an 8 oz. cup of black tea is considered to have 26 mg. of caffeine, but can actually vary from 14 to 70 mg. and an average healthy person can consume 400 mg. of caffeine a day and be OK. More than that can be considered to be too much caffeine.
- Yesterday's strong winds didn't do any damage to my garden, especially the eucalyptus tree.
Hope you are all having a lovely Saturday and a blessed start to your weekend.
I hope you will sleep tonight, and I chuckled when I saw the info on the caffeine. Sending hugs. x
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm sure I'll sleep well tonight. Ah, yes, lots of useful info out there! :D
DeleteI cut off my tea at 2pm. No other caffeine. It's usually recommended that you go to bed at the same time every night and get up at the same time every morning. Also don't do anything stimulating before bed that your mind will keep working on all night.
ReplyDeleteI seem to get this insomnia only on the days I have the Taxol treatment when the oncologist prescribes the steroids dosage. This is the second time it has happened. When I see the nurse practitioner, she reduces the amount of steroids I receive and I don't have a problem. I don't have any problems with falling asleep, otherwise.
DeleteDid you manage to take a nap and catch up on some sleep? There was a point when I struggled to sleep and would toss and turn into the early hours. I would get more and more frustrated as I had to get up for work back then so it is definitely a blessing that you don't have to do that. Hope you've had a lovely day. xx
ReplyDeleteIt's 2:30 p.m. now and I haven't needed a nap yet. I'll see how I feel in another hour or so. If not, I'll just have an early night. :)
DeleteI hope you have a good night's sleep tonight, Bless. I get insomnia every couple of months and it usually lasts for 2 or 3 days. It used to be difficult to deal with because I would try to fight it and make myself go to sleep (I always lost the battle and the insomnia won), but like you said, I find myself a little more prepared for it when it happens now. I use the time to catch up on reading and relax myself with praying and I have even gotten up and done a little quiet housework.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you are able to take naps if you need to- it's good to follow your body's demands. Praying for a peaceful, restful night for you, my friend. ((Hugs))
Thank you, Dawn. I am afraid I am going to have to wean myself from naps once I go back to the office at the end of my treatment! LOL!
DeleteHi Bless, I thought I would pop in and see you. Now that I have I feel bad for whinging about the rain. I'm so sorry that you are currently having to go through chemo and I hope it isn't making you feel too poorly.
ReplyDeleteBeing up all night is awful I'm glad you found things to do and didn't just stair at the ceiling.
My dad has cancer, unfortunately his is terminal and he just has hormone injections to slow things down. He finds he cant sleep in bed so my mum has bought him a recliner for the lounge and he tends to leave the Tele on all night and dose on and off.
I hope you have a sleep tonight. Xx
Hi Tara, thank you for stopping by! So sorry to hear about your dad. It must be so hard on your mum and you. (((HUGS)))
DeleteOh no, ooor Bless! I hope you don't have to drive anywhere anytime soon. I don't like videogames apart for Mahjong. I have several versions of it on my phone. I used to have an awesome version on my computer with tiles that had really good graphics of various candies so it made it so much fun to play. However, one day I got a virus on my computer and apparently it came via that game, so I uninstalled it and then promptly lost the CD and I can't even remember the name of it. No other mahjong game has ever come close to holding my attention for so long, hahaha.
ReplyDeleteI do hope you get a good night's sleep pretty soon though!
No I don't have to drive anywhere until Monday morning, when I have to go to the clinic for my injection. I should be fine by then. I'd be craving candy if I played with those mahjong tiles! I'm sure I'll sleep fine tonight. :)
DeleteI hope you will be able to get lots of rest tonight!
ReplyDeleteThank you. I did manage to get in a nap in the afternoon, but looking forward to being able to sleep tonight.
DeleteHope you are having a good weekend, Jess.
