More Rain on Wednesday!

Raindrops on Rose Leaves

I'm glad I took this photo before M pruned all the rose bushes, today!

It has been raining all day, today!  A slow, drizzle for the most part with occasional showers.  The temperatures are in the mid to high 50s (F), which I'd classify as "cold", but, that's just me.

Lois Lane Mango

Of the three mango seedlings I started from seeds, only Lois Lane is still growing.  M had brought it closer to the house, to be under the shelter of the "patio" overhang, to provide a more sheltered area because our night time lows went down to the upper 30s, earlier.  We will pot it up later in the spring.

The Pineapple Plant

M grew this pineapple plant from the top of a pineapple and it is getting a daughter plant, as well!  The leaves got damaged when it got really cold one night, but, the plant seems to be doing okay.

The Apple Seedling

The apple seedling lost most of its leaves, but, it has not been disturbed since I placed the stones around it.  Maybe it will grow into a big tree, one day.

The Avocado Tree

The avocado tree is growing well and seems to have escaped damage from the cold nights.

Snow Pea Seedlings

The snow pea seedlings are coming along nicely.  I will need to figure out some sort of trellis for them, before long.  M said the tops of his snow pea seedlings and a couple of other vegetable seedlings he's growing have all been eaten by something!  I offered him more snow pea seedlings to replace the ones that got eaten.

The self-seeded broccoli plants at the other end of this planting bed are growing, too:

Broccoli Seedling

I spent a good part of the day watching the continuation of the selection of the Speaker of the House of Representatives.  It was adjourned twice, today, and will reconvene tomorrow!  I am fascinated by the proceedings and enjoyed watching it.  I will be watching it, tomorrow, too.

While I watched the proceedings, I did a bit of mending for M, did a load of laundry, and, during one of the roll calls, brought in the empty trash can and the recycling bin (trash collection was delayed by one day because Monday was a holiday).

M arrived to tend to the garden in the morning.  He pruned the roses, today, and planted the two native plants he brought me as a Christmas gift.  We planted them in the front garden and I hope they will do well there.

Daughter and I had leftovers (soup and pasta) for brunch.  In the evening, I made thin pancakes for tea.  Daughter ate some with Nutella and bananas and some with sugar and lemon juice;  I ate mine with sugar and lemon juice.

Later, I chatted with friend R and texted with friend A's older daughter.

Today, I am grateful for:

- Rain for the garden
- M helping with the garden
- Working appliances
- Regular, weekly trash pick up
- Being able to watch history as it takes place

Today's joyful activity was watching the process of selecting the next Speaker of the House.

Tomorrow is supposed to be another rainy day!  We have planned to bake some love cake, but, I shall wait and see if daughter feels up to it.

How was your Wednesday?  What are your plans for Thursday?

  1. It was interesting to see your avocado tree. I have grown the see as a house plant, but it never gets very big - certainly not tree size.

    1. This is the first time I've grown one to this size from seed, June. I still don't know if this one will grow to produce fruit (I've read that, often, those grown from seed will not produce fruit), but, it's fun to see it growing. :)

  2. More rain! That's great and hope it's sufficient so you don't need to top up with watering and can save on your water bills. All your plants are looking good aren't they, well the pineapple leaves look a bit sorry for themselves the plant itself looks strong. The avocado tree looks amazing.

I'm having a quietish day today (Thursday), just pottering around indoors. I've finished my jigsaw and have a few bits of admin to sort through, and then I'll spend the rest of the afternoon playing the piano ... trying to see what I can remember and still play reasonably well ready for the new teacher on Saturday.

    1. Yes, we are experiencing a lot of rain, right now, with more rain in the forecast! I probably won't need to water most of this month! The plants are coming along, nicely!
Sounds like a relaxing day. Hope your legs have recovered from all the walking you did yesterday! Have fun with the piano playing. :)

  3. I'm glad to read that Lois Lane is surviving so well! Your avocado tree looks healthy and growing very well. When I was young (preteen) we had a large avocado tree in the garden where we lived. I was such a silly child and wouldn't even try any! Of course after we moved and I finally tried one, I realized how much I'd missed out on! Your garden is certainly loving the rain. I hope you don't get any flooding like other places in CA I see on the news.

    1. Thank you, Celie. I have high hopes for Lois Lane! :D Too funny about not trying avocados when you had a big tree in your yard, but, that's how we are, especially when growing up, isn't it? The garden is enjoying all the rain - I can already see new growth! So far, no flooding in my area, except for some road intersections, which always flood because the storm drains are usually clogged with debris!

  4. Nice to see your garden growing. And i am not watching about your Speaker of the House, but heard a bit about it on the radio.... could it be that we are in for a collapse of politics as they are ( world wide), going towards something new, something very different. that is what i am hoping for.

    1. Thank you, Jozien. I've been watching the process of electing the Speaker of the House, today, too. It is very educational, I think. At least, I am learning a lot!

  5. It was quite amusing that, having read your email yesterday, I made a mental note not to mention US politics to L today ... but right near the end of our walk she brought it up! I grinned quietly to myself! I'm still none the wiser; there was a rather detailed dissection of the proceedings but the gist of it seemed to tally with what you said. (More forcefully stated!)

Anyway, back to your garden... The plants are looking fab. I hope Lois and Ava bear fruit for you in due course... as for the pineapple, how very, very exciting! I do hope to see how that plant progresses.

    1. After having watched the proceedings, today, I learned a couple of interesting, new to me, facts! For example, I had, up till now, understood that the Speaker of the House had to be selected from those who had actually been elected to the House, but, apparently, one can nominate anyone!

Thank you! The plants are coming along well, aren't they? As M says, "Just add water!" :D

    2. Well, if they can't choose from who they have, maybe adding more options will help! (Or confuse matters further.) I saw it on our news tonight. They did a short sequence of all the announcements saying that there was no result yet. Hope it will be decided soon.

    3. It was decided tonight! After 15 rounds of voting, we have elected a new Speaker of the House! I found the whole procedure utterly fascinating!

  6. You are growing some wonderful things! I accidentally pulled up a sprout that had grown from a mango seed in my compost pile. I am impressed with the pineapple plant, too.

    1. Thank you, Stephenie. Maybe you can replant the mango seedling and see if it grows!

  7. Your plants are really benefitting from the rain and the avocado tree looks great. DH is also hooked on watching the selection of the Speaker proceedings and keeps me informed. We wondered if the outcome might be different with a secret ballot?
I didn't even go out to the mailbox today but took a couple of naps. By supper time I wanted to warm up the rest of a meat pie in the oven and I was able to bake some squares at the same time.

    1. Hi Bushlady, I thought I replied to your comment, yesterday, but, apparently I didn't publish it? It's not showing up!
Anyway, yes, the garden is doing well with all the rain. We had a sunny day, today, though.
My daughter and I watched the Speaker selection process, today, too, and finally, after 15 rounds of voting, a selection was made!
I hope you are continuing to recover from your cold and have a good weekend.

  8. I enjoyed seeing all of your plants. That avocado tree is growing gangbusters! That's the one you grew from a seed not long ago right?
Lois Lane looks very good. And more broccoli self-seeding. I think your last year's broccoli plant was a self seeder wasn't it? That produced well for you for quite a while.
We watched all of the Speaker of the House votes, etc too.
We knew that the first thing the House did every 2 years was elect a speaker. Without the issue of a challenged vote having been presented in my lifetime, I had no idea the vote would go on and on - caught in a trap until it was resolved - unable to perform any other function.
We found it all very interesting.

    1. Thank you, Debra; yes, the avocado was started from a seed in 2017. I still have more seeds I collected from the broccoli I grew last year; I should probably plant them, too, to see if anything grows.
The Speaker election process was very interesting, wasn't it? I found it very educational, too, as I didn't know that they could nominate (and potentially elect) someone who was not an elected member of the House! It'll be interesting to see how things progress from now on!
