Establishing the Pecking Order?

One Brave Bird!

I heard Dancer vocalizing and making what I call his "chirping" sounds, which usually signifies that he sees something interesting outside.  I looked outside through the sliding glass door and this is what I saw:

Neighbor's Chicken

Being watched by the resident cats - Mama Cat outside, Dancer inside:

"Oh, don't mind me, cats!"

"I'm just strutting around"

"Ooh, look!  A buffet!"

"You've eaten already, Mama Cat?"

"Hi Dancer!  I see you back there!"

"I'll just take a little nibble, if you don't mind"

"Thank you for sharing; see you later"

  1. Looks like you have a new chicken. They are so cute. I used to have four. I hope she doesn't get eaten by a dog.

    1. That chicken flies over the wall and has a good time in my back garden, eating the cat food and drinking water from the cat's bowl. But, seems to fly back over to the neighbor's house to roost. I wouldn't mind receiving a fresh egg or two in return! :D

  2. Kibble for two! The drama unfolds while Dancer gives a commentary from indoors!

    1. That chicken returned and ate all the kibble and had a drink of water from the cat's bowl. A short while later, Mama Cat was at the door, scratching, for more food!

  3. Good entertainment for Dancer, that's for sure. The best thing will be if the chicken starts laying eggs in your yard. :)

    1. No eggs, so far, but it ate all the kibble, drank water, and scratched around the yard for a good long while! :)

  5. That is indeed one brave & probably hungry chicken. I know those chipping sounds a cat makes, my two make at birds too.

    1. I think that chicken has realized that Mama Cat won't bother to chase it and Dancer is not a threat. It hung out in the back yard all day and ate all the food that was out, drank out of the water bowl and I suppose, eventually made it back over the wall to the neighbor's yard!

  6. I don't think chickens are very smart! Hoping she lays a few eggs for you!

  7. Your back garden is quite an adventure playground isn't it, with the chicken, the raccoons, cats, there have been rabbits, and who knows what else! xx

    1. That it is! Don't forget the opossums (or possums as they are also called); they are regular visitors, too! I've also seen some squirrels, lately, and of course, there are birds (mourning doves, mockingbirds, hummingbirds, and some sort of finch who also eats the cat's kibbles).

    1. Hi Eileen, so nice to hear from you, again! Yes, the chicken has found my garden to be a good place - plenty of food and water and cats that won't harm it! :D

  10. Oh that is pretty funny. Establishing a new pecking order is right!
I wonder how this will play out.
Well, Momma cat won't be lonely anymore with her new pal. lol

    1. Chicken Little has been coming over every day and Mama Cat has been ignoring it, completely. Today, I covered the extra food so that the chicken couldn't get at it. I used to put the food in a bowl, but, Mama Cat didn't like it in the bowl - I think the rim of the bowl obstructed her vision (she's sort of blind in one eye) and made her feel more vulnerable to being attacked (not that there's anything in the garden to attack her now that the raccoons seem to have left), so I put the food out in a pile on the steps and Chicken Little had easy access to the food.

  11. Is that a regular buffet or a holiday buffet?? (wink, wink)

    1. It's a regular buffet, all you can eat! The chicken wasn't very happy with me, today, because I covered up the leftover kibbles!
