Love Cake on Friday

Love Cake


Thursday night, my daughter and I stayed up till the "wee hours of the morning", doing our jigsaw puzzle!  She went to bed a little after 4:00 a.m. and I, well, by the time I cleaned the litter box and said my nightly devotions, etc., it was close to 5:00 a.m., when I got to bed!  Then, I couldn't fall asleep until almost 6:00 a.m.!  I woke up once, around 9:00 a.m., but, went back to sleep and slept till 11:00 a.m.  Then, after a cup of tea, I went back to doing the jigsaw puzzle until my daughter woke up!

In the afternoon, we went to the post office so daughter could mail her package to her friend.  I took the opportunity to post my gas bill payment and buy a book of stamps. 

After we got home, we decided to make the love cake.  This is a flour-less, semolina and cashew based cake with lots of eggs, pumpkin preserves, and spices.  This is a cake that is usually made at the holidays, along with the rich fruit cake that is also known as Christmas cake (but, made for weddings, as well).  My daughter, however, doesn't like fruit cake, so we only make the love cake, which, she does love!  I really don't know why it is called love cake.  According to one story, young women were supposed to make a love cake when a suitor called on her, in order to prove that they were accomplished cooks, but, I don't know how true that is.  My own theory is, you had to love someone very much in order to make this cake which requires so many expensive ingredients and the love and care that goes into making it, especially in the days when everything had to be cut and stirred by hand!  I have written about making love cake here and here.  We didn't make any in 2019, but, we were determined to make one this year!

Daughter did most of the cutting and chopping using the blender so things got done fairly quickly.  I roasted the semolina and mixed in the butter while she mixed the eggs and sugar.  Then, we added the semolina to the beaten egg mixture, the cashews and all the spices (nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom) and flavorings (rose essence, almond essence, vanilla, and orange blossom water), the pumpkin preserves and some ginger preserves.  We poured the batter into a 9x13 inch metal baking pan and a 9x9 inch glass baking pan that I had lined with parchment paper and brushed the tops of the batter with beaten egg whites to achieve a glossy finish.  My recipe calls for a "moderate" oven and says to bake until the top is nicely browned.  My daughter always complains about my old recipes as they don't give any specific oven temperatures or times!  But, love cake should be baked at a lower temperature for a longer time; it is a very moist cake.  I baked the cakes at 250F for 1 hour for the smaller cake and 2 hours for the bigger cake.  I test with a bamboo skewer to see if they are done.

In the evening, M came to tend to the garden and my daughter went out to dinner with A's daughters (they made plans on New Year's Eve), but she came back by 7:15 p.m. and we went to my cousin R's birthday party.  Cousin P and her daughte; the party was held at aunt T's place.  It was mostly family and a lot of fun.  We didn't leave until after 2:00 a.m. and my cousin sent me home with a whole tray of food!

Today, I am grateful for:
- Making the love cake with my daughter
- Cousin P and her daughter giving us a ride to the party and back
- Family gatherings
- Good food and conversation
- Friend M working on the garden for me

Today's joyful activities include making the love cake and attending the party in the evening.

Tomorrow, my daughter is planning a day out with some of her friends - more escape rooms, lunch, and maybe a musical.  I am planning to stay home and maybe do some organizing and decluttering.

  1. My husband really likes jigsaw puzzles and has had a hard time going to bed when he is working one. Not a good idea when you have to work the next day. However, he is getting better at leaving it even though he doesn't like to.

    1. The tendency is to want to try to fit in another piece and another one and one more! LOL. Dancer discovered the jigsaw puzzle, last night, even though I had covered it for the night with a table cloth! He thought it was great fun!

  2. Sounds like you had a great time with daughter doing the puzzle and making the love cake. It sounds like an interesting recipe with an interesting history.

    I sound really old when I say this, but when I took Home Economics back in school we used to learn what a low temp, moderate temp and high temp was. We also learned what kind of meals to prepare depending on what kind of work your husband did lol. I think I might have a copy of the book around here somewhere. I shall have to look.

    1. I do enjoy doing things with her, Sharon. My daughter is making the love cake recipe her own, which is nice; I can see her continuing to make it in years to come. :)

      One of my aunts in Sri Lanka had an oven that she would place on top of the stove to heat up! I had never seen anything like that, before or since, but, she used to bake the most delicious things in it! The traditional Sri Lankan kitchen didn't have ovens - when my maternal grandmother made cakes, she used to send the trays to the local bread bakery to have them baked! The type of meal according to the husband's work sounds a bit odd these days, doesn't it? But, I suppose, someone doing a physically more strenuous job would need a more substantial meal than someone doing a desk job.

  3. I have read about you making love cake before and it sounds intriguing. Probably not intriguing enough for me to make one though!

    1. Making the love cake at Christmas or New Year is becoming a bit of a tradition with us! I've really enjoyed having my daughter home these two weeks. I am definitely going to miss her when she leaves!

  4. you have had quite the 'social holiday' with friends and family ... how nice ... and lovely treats both made at home and brought back from outings- that cake looks yummy- i made an orange/pumpkin spice loaf yesterday, as I have managed to get a horrendous cold and the only thing I can taste lately is a strong spice blend- it looked truly awful (totally lop-sided and fell apart when cut) but tasted great ... is that function over form maybe?
    are you still working on the turquoise/aqua (my monitor is not the most accurate when viewing color) sweater? that looks like such a cheerful thing, and I look forward to seeing a 'modeling shot'-
    a dull weekend here with Paige doing well and feeling good after her surgery, but we are all anxious for her to get her treatment plan on Tuesday-
    enjoy the remainder of your sweet daughter's stay with you ... it's never long enough when we know there is a time limit- as always, my fondest wishes to both of you-

    1. It truly has been a social holiday, hasn't it? And that's with not attending at least two events due to being ill! But, things will be quieter, now.

      Your orange/pumpkin spice loaf sounds delicious, even if it was lop sided and fell apart (sometimes, spice cakes require being wrapped and kept overnight before being cut)! But, I am sorry to hear that you've come down with a bad cold. I hope you recover from it, quickly. I am very glad to hear that Paige is continuing to recover well from her surgery; I hope the treatment plan will be something that won't be too taxing for her.

      Yes, I am still working on the light blue sweater - actually, I haven't touched it, these past couple of weeks!

      My daughter will leave tomorrow afternoon. Even she was saying that the two weeks have flown!

    I used to do do jigsaw puzzles a lot. Once done, I glued them to large poster boards and used to decorate the apartment. :)

    1. Thank you, Nil. I served a piece of the cake to one of my friends and was told it was very good.

      That's a very creative way to decorate your apartment! I will probably break these puzzles after I do them and bring them out at Christmas, next year, or give them to my friend so she could do them, too. :)

    1. We both enjoy cooking and she's grown up cooking with me, but, making love cake together is now a tradition! :) I do have a good relationship with her, which is a blessing.
