Cloudy Monday

It was a cloudy, overcast day, today.  The sun struggled to shine through the cloud cover without much success.

I called the radiation oncologist's office to confirm they were open today and I could come down to obtain copies of my records.  Then, I drove to downtown and collected the copies I had requested.  I spent a little time chatting with the receptionist and the radiation technician and commiserated with them over the impact of the hospital closing down.  The hospital had been opened (at a different location than its present location) in the 1850s by the Sisters of Charity.  It is considered the oldest hospital in Los Angeles.

No matter what led to its bankruptcy, its closure affects not only the patients it served, but, also, over 1,000 people who worked at the hospital who are now facing unemployment.  The receptionist said he has been to a few job interviews and asked me to keep him in my prayers.  I told him that I will definitely pray, not only for him, but for others as well, including the nurse who has a son with disabilities, the lady in the hospital admissions office who takes care of her sister, and the parking garage attendant who informed me that although he's originally from South America, his father was from India.

I stopped at the little Armenian grocery store on my way home and bought a loaf of their bakery bread ($1.50).  I opened a can of corned beef when I came home and made myself corned beef sandwiches for lunch.  I made "lemonade" by squeezing the juice of half a Meyer lemon into a glass of water, no sugar required, to have with my lunch.

Later in the evening, I watched some news, although I dozed for a bit, during the news!

Afterwards, I cleaned out the fridge - tossed some too-old food, washed/wiped the shelves and drawers, replaced the box of baking soda, etc.  I didn't do the shelves on the door, but, will do that, next time.  Then, emptied the kitchen trash and took the big trash bins to the curb for pick up in the morning.  Finally, I washed the dishes.

Friend R called while I was cooking my dinner and we chatted for a bit.  Later, I practiced the piano and video chatted with my daughter.

Today, I am grateful for:
- I was able to get copies of my medical records without any difficulties
- The care I received at the hospital during my treatments
- A safe drive to the doctor's office and back
- Freshly baked bread
- Naps on the sofa

Today's joyful activity was video chatting with my daughter.

Tuesday's To Do List:
- Bring the trash cans in
- Water the indoor plants
- Make a couple of appointments
- Organize some of the kitchen cabinets
- Errands - put gas to the car

How was your Monday?  What are your plans for Tuesday?

  1. I guess at some point, it's cheaper to build new hospitals than to refurbish old ones. But what an effect it is having on thousands of people. I'm hoping the best for all involved.

    1. Yes; the hospital building is in need of extensive earthquake retrofitting and that would cost almost as much as building new from the ground up! Change is inevitable I know and my mother used to say that change was good. I just hope that, eventually, everyone affected by the change will be OK.

  2. Monday was migraine day so today (Tuesday) I am doing absolutely nothing as a result. Actually, that's not strictly true as I have one lesson to do this afternoon, but that's all.

It's midday and still very foggy outside so I'm happy to stay inside in the warm. I can't see the houses on the other side of the road, so I don't fancy walking anywhere in these conditions.

    1. I hope you are feeling better, today, Eileen. I'm glad you are taking it easy and resting, other than the one lesson this afternoon. Wow, that is thick fog! Good idea to stay indoors!

  3. It always feels good to clean out the fridge. I thought of you yesterday when I passed a Sri Lankan restaurant

    1. It feels good to open the fridge and see it nice and clean. Maybe one day you and your daughter might try some Sri Lankan food. :)

  4. I'm glad you were able to get copies of your medical records ... but so sad about the dreadful impact the hospital closing is going to have on so many-I will pray all can find solutions to those problems-
Ugh to cleaning the refrigerator ... that is my very least favorite domestic task ... and sadly my fridge usually shows how I continue to avoid doing it! I find sniglets of completely unrecognizable produce and packages of mystery leftovers when I peek inside ... and we will not even discuss the 'use before' dates on bottles and jars- it's not even that hard to clean the blasted thing... I just hate doing it- I've told my children that when I shuffle off this earth, they are not to judge/remember me by the contents or the condition of the refrigerator!
Sunny here today, but cold- I am still at Paige's so I might tackle some of her yard issues- take care and plan some happy moments for yourself-
    Fondest regards as always-
    Barb

    1. Thank you, Barb. I feel better now that I have a copy of the records with me. Yes, hopefully, the people affected by the hospital closure will be OK.

Too funny about judging you by the condition of your refrigerator! No, we won't discuss the use before dates! LOL. I am rather guilty of ignoring them, myself.

Hope your cold is better; if not, I would ignore the yard and rest, especially on a cold day. My best wishes to you, Paige, and Whitney. Take care.

  5. I hope those employees at the hospital all find new jobs. I was just cleaning out my fridge yesterday, too. Hope the piano lessons are going well. Practice is everything!

    1. I hope so, too, Stephenie. I try to clean the fridge out, weekly, but I don't always wipe down the shelves and drawers, each week. I have my next piano lesson, tomorrow (Wednesday). Need to practice a bit more, today!

  6. So glad you could get your records.

Cleaning the refrigerator! You deserve a Gold Star for doing that job! -smile- Why is it, not many, really enjoy doing that? Oh but, maybe some people do, and it's just me, who hates doing it.

    1. Thank you, Wisps of Words. I'll accept that gold star with pleasure! LOL. I don't mind cleaning the fridge, but I am happy that I don't need to defrost the freezer, as I have a self-defrosting freezer. :)

  7. I hope the employees at the hospital will soon find god jobs. It's not easy to find jobs with good benefits, especially with a good health insurance plan.

    1. I hope so, too, Nil. I also hope they got some kind of severance package, but, I doubt it.

  8. Good to get your record copies to keep. It always saddens me when I hear of any closure of an establishment where hundreds or people work. I do hope they all find alternative employment.

I've written one or two letters to make up for the Christmas cards that never got sent, and I find that the price of international stamps has gone up, so that I had to buy a few extra stamps to add to the ones I bought before Christmas. That will teach me to get my act together in future!

    1. I hope they all find good jobs, Bushlady, and get through this disruption in their lives.

Oh, yes, postage keeps going up, doesn't it? I bought a new book of stamps (domestic mail) at the beginning of this year; I think I still have some airmail stamps from last year. :)
