Potluck/Chili Cook Off on Sunday

One of my former supervisors held his annual potluck/chili cook off, today.  I received the invitation in the mail several weeks ago and I had looked forwards to it.

So, this morning, I baked an apple dump cake to take as my contribution to the potluck.  That is becoming my favorite dessert to take to these sort of gatherings!  Someone told me that it was so good that she looked up the recipe, right then and there!  She asked me if it was as simple as it sounded and I told her it was!

I had a lovely afternoon.  It was nice to see some former colleagues.  When the deputy director of my department saw me, her first question was if I was ready to come back!  LOL!  I was a bit taken aback, as I wasn't expecting her to ask me that!  I told her that no, I liked being able to sleep in, in the mornings.  But, before she left, she came over to me and told me that if I changed my mind, to let her know!  Rather gratifying, in a way!

It turned out to be a warm day.  We reached 99F, this afternoon.  The party was held outdoors, and there was a shady patio area, but, it was still quite hot.  I stayed until almost 5:00 p.m. (the party started at 1:00 p.m. and I was one of the first to arrive); there were still a few people when I left, but, I was ready to come home, by then.

I had a cup of tea after I came home and relaxed.  Watched a program on TV and texted back and forth with my daughter.  She gave her presentation, today, and said it went well.  Afterwards, she went to dinner with two colleagues who were also attending the conference.

Saturday's book decluttering:

6/8  Book Decluttering
Seems a bit ironic to me that I am decluttering my crafts books now that I finally have time to craft!  But, I looked through this book and decided there really wasn't anything in there that I wanted to make to give as gifts.

Sunday's book decluttering:

6/9 Book Decluttering
Today, I am grateful for:
- Getting to socialize with former colleagues
- Being asked if I am ready to come back, by the deputy director!
- Good food and pleasant company
- A relaxed evening
- Daughter did well with her presentation

Today's joyful activity was attending the potluck and socializing with former colleagues.

 Monday's To Do List:
- Do some paperwork
- Go to the post office
- Put gas to the car
- Call neighbor T to check on her (she didn't call me for our usual Sunday morning chat)
- Dust living room & dining area
- Clean the fridge
- Take trash cans to the curb for Tuesday trash pick up
- Water the garden, front and back

How was your Sunday?  What have you planned for Monday?

  1. Do you keep in touch with any of your former colleagues, meeting for coffee or suchlike? The potluck/cook off sounds like fun, although I wouldn't have coped too well with the heat even if I was in the shade.

Would you ever consider going back to work, maybe part time? Nice to be asked though wasn't it.

Well done on finding two more books to declutter.

    1. This was the first time I met any of my former colleagues since I retired. Even when I was working, I didn't socialize with them outside of work hours. But, yesterday, I met someone who was hired after I retired and she asked for my phone number (and gave me hers), stating we need to get together for coffee or something. Maybe I need to make the effort to reach out to one or two former colleagues and meet up with them.

I don't know if I will ever return to work. I enjoyed my work, but, I enjoy my leisure even more! Not to mention being able to sleep in! Last night, for example, I couldn't fall asleep until after 4:45 a.m. That's when my daughter texted me to say good morning and that she was leaving to attend today's conference (it was 7:45 a.m. in Baltimore). But, because I knew I could sleep in this morning, I didn't worry too much about it. If I was working, I'd have to be up by 6:30 a.m. But, it was VERY nice to be asked. :)

Thank you, it's getting a little easier, although I still have this urge to re-read everything before I give them away! LOL.

  2. You should enter the chili cookoff next year. How about a curry based chili? You have a year now to perfect your recipe. :)

    1. You know, I did toy with the idea! I think I might just do that, next year!

  3. That's such a compliment that your deputy director asked you to come back to work! I'm sure you were an excellent employee. I can tell. How fun that people enjoy your apple dump cake and want the recipe.

    1. Thank you! I felt very gratified. Yes, I believe I was a good employee - after all, I worked there for 35 years and never received even one annual evaluation that wasn't all "excellent" in all categories, although I had one supervisor who thought I needed to be more assertive! She was one of my first supervisors and I am still friends with her! She probably still thinks I should be more assertive! LOL! The apple dump cakes bakes up more like a pie or cobbler than a cake; I think that's why people like it.

  5. I used to take my daughter to the children’s museum even long after I stopped working there as a guide. It happened to me, too. The executive director was walking the halls, stopped to say she was so happy to see us and if I wanted to come back, let her know.
When my daughter was 3 weeks old, I was still on maternity leave, but I brought her anyway to show off to my coworkers. The executive director heard we were there and came down. Everyone was passing the baby around, and she was good for all of it. However when the boss came down and was handed my daughter, she started crying! The time she asked me to come back (Evita was about 7 by this point), my daughter nudged and whispered, “Is that the lady I cried for when she held me?”
Yup, lol. Her and only her.

    1. I guess your daughter didn't take kindly to being held by that one particular person! I'm sure you had your reasons for not wanting to return to your former job, but, it's nice to know that there's a position open if we ever do wish to return, isn't it?

  6. That must have been a very pleasant party to catch up with former colleagues, and for them to enjoy your dump cake dessert, and to be asked if you would think of coming back.

Your book decluttering makes me feel guilty as I just picked up 3 books at the ongoing library book sale when I should be getting rid of more! But one was a cute little book about English Tea Parties, with recipes in it and I just had to have it to read through and enjoy, even if I donate it back again later or pass it on to a friend from England. I always love to be able to justify these purchases because after all, what I pay is a donation to the library!

    1. It was very nice to get together with the former colleagues (and enjoy some good food, as well).

I don't think you should feel guilty about acquiring more books, Bushlady, as what you are doing is making a donation to the library, as you say, and you might donate it back to the library or pass it along to a friend. The English Tea Party book sounds like a lovely book, and, after you've enjoyed looking through it (and, perhaps, enjoying some nice teas), I'm sure your friend will enjoy it, too. :)

  7. I still haven’t made your famous dump cake. 😊 Soon I hope. I have a long list of recipes I’d like to try. ( in addition to other craft projects).
Too bad I can’t retire yet.

    1. It is one of the easiest things to make - less than 10 mins. of active preparation time. Then, 30-45 mins. in the oven and it is done!
