Mini Heatwave on Monday

We have had a mini heatwave, yesterday and today.  Yesterday, we were 99F, today, we topped 100F.  We will cool down, during the week, according to the weather forecasters but, today, at 5:00 p.m., when I came home after running errands, it was 98F in the shade.  It was about 10 degrees cooler inside the house, though, and I was comfortable.

In the morning, after I had my tea and responded to blog comments, etc., I called the new primary care doctor's office and made an appointment to see her.  The earliest appointment date they could give me was July 22, which isn't too bad, I suppose.  I need to see if I have enough medication refills to last me till then, though!

After that, I did some paperwork that needed my attention.  Last year, when I renewed my driver's license, I applied for, and received, what is known as a Real I.D., to comply with the new requirements.  The application form required two documents as proof of residency and identity.  There were samples of what those documents could be, listed on the application and website, etc.  I took several copies of documents with me, including utility bills and bank statements, etc., a file folder of them, actually, and presented them all to the staff who issued me the Real I.D.

Well, on Saturday, I received a letter from the DMV, stating that, at the time of issuance of my Real I.D., I had provided only one proof of residency!  The letter had my mailing address printed on it and the instructions stated that, if that was my current address, then, I was to check the box stating it is my address, sign and date the letter, and mail it back to them in the self-addressed, postage pre-paid envelope provided, and they will consider it as the second required proof of residency document.  If it wasn't my address, then, I was to check the other box, and provide copies of 2 documents from the list of documents as indicated.

When I first received the letter, I was a bit miffed.  It was the way the letter was worded, very accusatory - "you only provided one document".  No!  I had taken multiple documents; it was the staff person who picked just one of them for the files!  I wanted to write something to that effect on the letter I was sending back, but I decided it was best to just leave things as they were and simply comply.  So, I checked the box stating it was my current mailing address, etc., and signed and dated it.

However, I wanted to take a photocopy of the document and the envelope they had provided before I mailed it, for my records (and this is how I end up with a full file cabinet!).  Unfortunately, the printer we have at home (which is a photocopier as well), wouldn't co-operate!  It kept telling me that it couldn't detect the magenta ink!  Really?  I pressed black, only, but that didn't work.  I took a photo of the document with my cell phone, but I wasn't satisfied with that.

So, I went to the library, in the afternoon, to use their photocopier.  I took a copy each of the letter and the envelope (it wouldn't do legal size copies, so I couldn't put both documents down on the glass for one copy, and I didn't want to reduce the size of the image, either).  It cost $.25 per copy.  Never mind; that $.50 paid to the library for copies was well worth it, to me.  While I was there, I spoke with one of the library workers and she said she, too, received the same letter!  I guess they are sending these letters out to verify that the addresses people provided are the correct addresses?

After that, I went to the post office to mail the letter and a decluttered book that one reader had asked me if she could have.  Then, I went to the gas station to put gas to the car.  Gas was $3.65 per gallon and I put $40 worth of gas.  I am keeping to my $50 per month budget for gas, without any trouble.  I also went to the store to buy more cat food - dry cat food, this time, as they were all out of the sale priced cat food, last week.  I bought two 13 lb. bags, this time (I go through about one bag a week, since I feed all the cats in the neighborhood and at least one possum!)

I rested a bit, after I came home, then, dusted the living room, dining area, and my bedroom, cleaned the fridge, took the trash cans to the curb, and watered the garden, both front (by hand) and back (sprinklers).

  1. Letters like that are SO frustrating. I smiled at the picture though - I have that book, but at the moment it's on my 'keep' shelf

    1. Yes, you made those felt birds, didn't you? Maybe the book will find someone who might make better use of the patterns and ideas. :)

  2. In here there is so hot that I should also make some lemonade ☺

    1. Lemonade is a refreshing drink, when it is hot. I hope you make some and enjoy it. :)

  3. That seems a long time to wait for a doctor's appointment. I can usually make an appointment within two weeks and I think that is a long wait - I usually feel better before I get to see him!

That sort of bureaucracy is frustrating. I'd be keeping copies of everything as well!

    1. Yes, it is a bit of a wait, but, luckily I am not ill at the moment. After the initial visit, they will probably schedule me for follow up visits every 3 months or so. I'm not sure how this new doctor's office will be if one is ill and needs to see the doctor right away. I'll have to ask them.

  4. Maryland is starting to do the Real I. D. thing and your story prompted me to go to their site and see what the deal is. In short, I have until November to comply. Need to put that on my to do list.

I guess you're acclimated differently, but 88 inside the house would be too hot for me. I'd have on the AC, but maybe it is really true that dry heat doesn't feel as bad as when it's hot and humid.

    1. One more thing for you to do, Live and Learn. :) Dry heat is better than hot and humid, and I have a fairly high tolerance level for heat. I'm usually cold when others feel hot! My window a/c unit hasn't been put up for the summer yet. It won't get hot enough for that, for me, until it is in the upper 90s inside the house. :)

  5. Wow, I can’t believe gas is that much. I’ve gotten it for $2.19 here. (With a discount.)

    1. Ha, ha, actually, our gas prices have come down a bit! It was over $4.00, last month! I held off putting gas until I was down to 3/4 tank, but, I have to go downtown, today, and I needed to fill up before that.

  6. 100°F is too hot! I thought it’s unbearably hot here, but compared to CA it’s not that bad.

I hope you stay inside as much as possible.

    1. It's more humid where you are, Nil, so you feel it more, I think. But, 100F is rather warm. I even turned on the fan for a bit. :)

  7. Goodness, I thought our waiting times for a doctors appointment were bad, but 22 July!!! Presumably if you feel it's an emergency, you can get a quicker one?

    1. I honestly don't know how it would have worked if I was sick and needed a doctor's appointment right away. I suppose they might have been able to fit me in, sooner. I am just grateful all this upheaval didn't take place while I was undergoing treatment! That would have stressed me out, completely!

  8. Hi Bless,

I got the same letter. I was actually relieved that we didn't have to go back in person and stand in line again. I signed the form and mailed it at the post office. I'm actually glad that they are being so strict with proof of residence now. It has been hot here, hasn't it? I am treating myself to air conditioning. It just feels so nice to be comfortable.

    1. I didn't realize that they were sending the letter to everyone! I'm glad you are treating yourself to air conditioning. I was thinking of you when I watched the news this evening and saw the weather forecast. They are saying it will cool off, after tomorrow.

  9. I hate pumping gas but it's all self-serve everywhere near us so if DH isn't with me and the light is even on, I have to bite the bullet and do the deed. There are 3 gas bars fairly close to each other and the other day I checked the price at all three and came back to the first one I passed. It wasn't really a big deal to pump the gas myself but I still would love to have a friendly human do it for me, and have a job there, like in the old days, even if I did have to pay more.

    1. I, too, miss the days of full service gas stations. It was nice to have them check my oil levels, clean the windscreens, check the tires, etc. I only know of one gas station that still offers full service; it is in Beverly Hills, and I used to pass it on my way to and from work when my daughter attended UCLA, back when I'd drop her off on campus and go to the office.
