Dancer's Step by Step Guide to Sleeping

Dancer has no problem falling asleep

"Step 1:  Stack two cushions, one on top of the other, so you have a comfy spot on which to lie. 
Step 2:  Snuggle right up to a hand knitted blanket for warmth and added comfort."

Last night, too, it was 3:30 a.m. before I fell asleep, so, it was hard to wake up when the alarm went off at 7:00 a.m.   As I told my daughter, I wished I was retired already, so I could have slept a little longer!  But, I had to go to work, so I got up, got dressed, and went to the office.

I had a fairly productive day at the office.  We are being asked to maintain a spreadsheet, noting down when assignments were received, when we started to work on them, and when we completed the assignments, so I updated my information, in addition to actually working on my projects.

"Or, you can sleep on a quilt covered bed"

"Step 3:  If the cushions and blankets don't work, move to a quilt covered bed; hand made quilts are especially soft and comfy."

I stopped at the grocery store on my way home from work to buy two cans of cat food for Dancer.  After I came home, I had a cup of tea, had a snack, watched some TV and knitted.  Later, I video chatted with my daughter.

Today, I am grateful for:
- Being able to get tips on how to fall asleep from Dancer
- A safe drive to the office and back
- A productive day at the office
- A restful evening
- Video chatting with daughter

    1. Dancer is a helpful kitty, isn't he? Hope you were able to fall asleep, eventually. Are you able to sleep in and get up later in the morning? Or do you have to wake up early?

  2. How much longer do you have to work?

    Dancer certainly knows how to relax, looking very comfortable in your photos. Did you make the quilt?

    1. Eileen, technically speaking, I can retire anytime I want; just submit my request and the required paperwork. But, I want to actually wait until I complete 35 years of service, which is in July. So, I have about 2 1/2 months before I retire. I will be attending a retirement seminar, next week, which will be the 1st step towards retirement.

      Yes, I made the quilt. I made two like that; I think my daughter took the other one up to Berkeley, with her.

  3. You really should try to be more like Dancer :)

    Seriously, though, I don't know how you manage to function well enough to drive to work and perform your job while on so little sleep for several days in a row now. I'm a zombie if I don't get enough sleep ONE night. Did you ever discuss your insomnia with your GP?

    1. Yes, I've discussed it with my doctors. My doctors have suggested certain things I can do, including medications I can take, but I don't want to take more medications, as I feel I take too many medications as it is. The insomnia is really partly due to the medications I take and partly due to me being a night owl, anyway!

  4. As someone who sometimes can't get to sleep ... I wonder if you've considered your caffeine consumption in the evening and/or how late you're eating dinner? I've found these affect me greatly and I do need to be careful. Just a thought. Hope you can get your sleep schedule on track.

    1. Hi Chris, well, I drink one cup of coffee (regular instant, not decaffeinated) in the morning and one cup of regular black tea in the evening, when I come home from work. I don't know if that is a lot or too much caffeine for me. There have been days when I drink tea both in the morning and evening, and occasionally, I drink coffee both times. I haven't seen it making much of a difference, one way or the other.

      I do eat dinner much later than a lot of other people; I think it is more cultural than anything else. Dinner was usually served at 8:00 p.m., when I was growing up, and these days, it is usually eaten around 8:30 p.m. or so. Then, I am hungry, again, around midnight! Especially on nights when I am still up at 2:00 a.m.!

  5. Ha ha, cats have got the art of sleeping down to a tee haven't they! Dancer in the third photo is looking at you saying "look its easy...."
    Roll on retirement for you, then you can sleep in a bit from time to time. Insomnia is so annoying, I suffer from it from time to time, thankfully its not constant.

    1. Sharon, cats really do know how to relax and sleep, don't they? Yes, I think my sleep schedule won't matter too much once I am retired! I'll just try to make all my appointments late afternoon ones! LOL. I went to sleep at 2:30 a.m., last night, but I slept till 11:30 a.m. today, so I got my 8 hrs. of sleep (I woke up once at 8:30 a.m. when a friend called, but I went back to sleep!) But I woke up with a slight sinus pressure headache, so, I am taking it easy!

  6. I sometimes notice that if the moon is full I am more likely to struggle to get to sleep. Also, I sometimes find that one friend or another has also had a bad night at the same time as me, when we compare notes. One idea I have about my own insomnia bouts is that I may just have been too much with people and noise during the day and I need to get up and be quiet in the middle of the night, knowing that the phone is unlikely to ring.
    Last night though, I slept okay after our day of traffic trials, but I was still tired and I went back to bed after breakfast and slept some more.
    I wonder if cats ever have insomnia, apart from wanting to roam around in the night, making up for it during the day? They really have napping down to a fine art, don't they?

    1. Bushlady, that's an interesting observation about the moon and insomnia! I think, with me, a lot of the time, it is simply wanting to stay up to read one more blog, play one more game of sudoku, watch one more TV program, knit one more row, etc. Then, when I do get to bed, I am too keyed up to fall asleep! LOL. I probably need to turn the TV off earlier, turn the computer off earlier, and do a brain dump of "things to do" onto a pad of paper so I don't stay up fretting!
