Happy New Year on Friday the Thirteenth!

April 13 is the traditional Sri Lankan New Year.  This year, April 13 was on a Friday, so we have that, as well.  In Sri Lanka, it is a holiday and celebrated with special foods, festivities, new clothes, and so forth.  But, for me, it was a regular working day.

Steps to the new office building

I took some pictures, today.  The steps from the street level to the lobby level (there is an elevator to provide handicap access, as well).

There are 16 floors in the building; I am on the 14th floor.

My new cubicle

The window is behind me when I sit at the computer and I get the morning sun.

Another View

The picture below was taken from a different window; if you click on the picture to enlarge it, I've labeled the Hollywood sign and the Griffith Observatory, in the distance:

A glimpse of one of the freeways

Disney Concert Hall and Roof Garden in the distance

The windows are floor to ceiling and today, we were discussing what could happen if there is an earthquake and the windows shatter!

Standing at the window and looking down

Today, I was grateful for:
- Getting through the 1st week at the new building
- Lovely views from the new office
- Friday!
- A safe commute to work and back
- A quiet, relaxed evening at home

Drought tolerant plantings in the patio area

How was your Friday?  What are your plans for the weekend?

    1. The plantings are lovely, aren't they? I am going to study them a little more and get some ideas from them for my own garden.

  2. As far as cubicals go, you have a pretty nice one. It's big, also.
I like your views. It's fun to identify different landmarks when you're up high. I used to work on the 31st floor and especially liked it when we would be above the clouds. The view was just like we were on an airplane.

    1. Oh, my, 31st floor! That's quite a ways up! The former building had 26 floors and I've been up there a few times to attend meetings. I'm glad I didn't have to work up there on a regular basis, because I don't know if I'd be able to go down that many flights of stairs if there was an earthquake!

  3. Happy Belated New Year, Bless! Lovely views from your cubicle, actually, much nicer than I would have anticipated. It's been many years (30!) since I've been to L.A. and I couldn't really remember if the downtown area had lots of skyscrapers or not. I'd rather have the views you have than stare at another skyscraper just a few feet away! Enjoy your new cubicle for the next few months :)

My Daughter is here this weekend so my tentative plans to go to the native plant sale and the blues concert at the local winery have now been cancelled so I can spend some time with her. We're going to watch "Nosferatu" together because she has to watch it for a Art History class, we need to go over the paperwork I have to fill out for the FAFSA audit, and then chat, of course!

I hope you have a good weekend!

    1. Thank you, Nathalie. There are several high rise buildings in another part of downtown, a few blocks away, but not visible from my windows. We are sort of at the edge of downtown.

I know you are happy to have your daughter visit for the weekend. Enjoy spending time together. Have a lovely weekend, Nathalie.

  4. What an amazing view you have from your office window. I'd struggle to get any work done, too busy looking outside. X

    1. I am enjoying being near a window, again. I love having a bird's eye view of the surrounding area.

  5. Happy New Year Bless :) Stunning views from your office window but I'd have to hand in my resignation if I were asked to work there. I'm not good with heights and I'd certainly freak out if there were floor to ceiling windows.

Is your office all open plan but with individual cubicles? xx

    1. Thank you, Suzanne. The windows have louvers which I pulled up for the pictures, so you'd be fine working there. :)

Yes, it is all open plan with individual cubicles. It was the same at the previous office, too, but the cubicle walls were higher. The cubicle walls here are lower. I think the higher supervisors have offices with doors that can be closed.

  6. Happy New Year Bless!
I love the view from your window. Whenever I'm on a high rise looking out I feel like a bird. :)
Plants in your patio area are very pretty. Are they cacti?

    1. Wish you the same, Nil. I made kiribath (milk rice) this morning, to celebrate!

The plants are actually succulents; they are growing in the patio in the office building. But I am trying to grow succulents in my garden, as well, because we need to learn to conserve water.

  7. A belated Happy New Year to you! I like that you say the single word 'Friday' as one of the things for which you are grateful. I feel like that on my last working day of the week too, but it's a shame because it's like wishing time away

    1. Thank you, Eloise. I am always ready for Friday to roll around! There seems to be a little less traffic in the mornings - the traffic reporters call it "Friday light". Some of my colleagues have the day off on Fridays and the rest of us wear more casual clothes and the whole office atmosphere seems a bit more relaxed. Then, it marks the end of the work week and there is the weekend to look forward to! :)

  8. Your cubicle really appeals to me, with such lovely views from the window and the light shining in behind you as you work. Altogether it looks a beautiful city and I think you are proud of it, right?
To say that we are in the middle of April is a laugh, as we have the temperature around zero and in Southern Ontario it is chaos with freezing rain and accidents. We are hoping that we don't get the same. Snow and ordinary rain we can cope with. My hibernation mood kicked in, and although I went out for a little shopping this morning, I did very little in the afternoon and ended up sitting on the floor at the bookcase browsing a book with photos of villages in England! However, one intrepid little chipmunk was peeking out of a snow tunnel today and was very happy when I dropped a peanut down in front of the entrance. I'm sure he is as surprised as we are that it is still winter. I wonder if he has a calendar rather than going by temperature?

    1. It's a nice little cubicle as far as cubicles go, isn't it, and I can't complain about the view. In fact, I am tempted to get some plants to keep next to the window, but I am resisting the temptation, as I won't be there for much longer. Yes, I am proud of my city; I've lived here for 40 years, come June!

Oh, dear! It sounds like winter has outstayed its welcome! I don't blame you for not wanting to go out in that weather! Your book sounds like a nice one to look through - England has some lovely villages, I think. Very picturesque. I saw a blurb about a program about British Villages on public TV (Penelope Keith's Hidden Villages; I haven't watched it, yet) - I think the episodes are available on YouTube, too. Maybe something you might like to watch.

I am sure the little chipmunk was grateful for his treat! No doubt his internal clock was telling him that winter must be over! Hope you get warmer temperatures, soon.

  10. Happy New Year!

Your office space looks so nice. I am glad now that you will have an opportunity to experience working there before your retirement. The views of the city are spectacular, and you must know that I am loving that patio garden with the succulents. Lovely.

    1. Susan, you are right! I, too, am glad I have the opportunity to enjoy the new surroundings. I will be exploring the patio areas (there are two - one in the front and one in the back) in the next couple of weeks. I noticed some tables set up at the back - might be a nice place in which to sit and have lunch!

  11. Wow, what wonderful views you have, will you get any work done? I would be gazing out all the time. The tallest building in my town is 4 floors, lol.

    1. Sharon, one reason why I requested my computer to be installed so that the window is behind me is to avoid the temptation of gazing out the window all the time! :D
