Thursday

On Thursday, I went to work in the morning.  Paid a quick visit to the farmers' market and bought myself an almond croissant for brunch.

I had my dental appointment in the afternoon to have my stitches removed.  I had left the office around 2:15 p.m. and got home by 3:00 p.m.  My dental appointment was for 4:00 p.m. and I was feeling very sleepy.  So, I set the alarm for 3:40 p.m. and took a nap!  Then, I went to the dental clinic.  There was no waiting, today.  I was seen as soon as I went in and the assistant clipped and removed my stitches.  It took all of 5 minutes.  My immediate dental needs have been taken care of.  I will return next year, once I get my insurance changed to one where I will have more coverage, to get the crown put on my root canal tooth and deep cleaning, etc., done.

Afterwards, I stopped in at the small Armenian grocery store near the dental clinic to see what they had.  One of the fruits they had that I haven't seen anywhere else is red currants.  A tiny container is some $3.99, though.  I just bought some green grapes for $.99/lb.  It came to $1.24.

I have now paid $8.49 + $1.24 = $9.73 on groceries this month.

After I came home, I changed the dust sheets on the family room sofas and washed the old ones.  Then, I called my half-sister and left her a message.  After that, I called my nextdoor neighbor and  took some zucchini bread over to her.  I had thought of doing a couple of other things, but began to feel tired, so I just watched TV, answered blog comments, read and commented on other blogs, etc.

It was a cooler day, today.  An afternoon high of only 85F.  The house was 70F when I woke up and even in the evening.  The cooler weather reminds me that it is time to plant a fall garden, and, if I am going to plant any replacement fruit trees, now would be a good time to buy some.  I want to plant another peach tree, I think, and maybe a tangerine tree.

Plans for tomorrow include having my gardener friend replace my smoke detector battery.  It is beeping to indicate that it is time to replace it and I tried to do it myself, but, even standing on the top step of my 2-tier step-stool, I can't reach it!

I have been very lazy and not done much cooking, this week.  I had scrambled eggs on toast one night, cheese and toast one night, egg salad sandwiches, some fried rice, roast chicken (from the freezer) and corn on the cob, etc. for lunches and dinners.  My daughter, however, cooked this wonderful pasta dish for herself over the weekend and sent me a picture:

Daughter's Pasta Dish
Lentil pasta, smoked sausage, onions, and kale.   Looks good, doesn't it?

Daughter also did some other shopping besides groceries and she bought herself a box of water paints for $1.50 and a paint brush ($1.00).  She sent me a picture of her painting:

Water-Color Panda
I believe she found the inspiration for the painting on-line.

How was your Thursday?

  1. Your daughter is very talented with both painting and cooking. Does her job have anything to do with painting or art?

    1. Thank you, Live and Learn. She was teasing me about posting her pictures saying I'm bragging! No, she works as a data analyst, although, increasingly, she's been encouraged to work on other, more administrative tasks. But, every now and then, she'll draw or paint. This is a girl who always maintained that she can't draw, who cried when her 1st grade teacher asked her to participate in an art competition (she placed among the 10 finalists and won a merit award); she's her own worst critic, I tell her.

  2. That panda is cute!

I'm glad you're done with your dental work for this year, Bless and that the temps are cooling down where you are.

    1. Thanks, Nathalie. I was thinking of you when our weather turned and it got cooler, thinking you'd enjoy the cooler temperatures. I wore my sweatshirt and pants, socks, and a scarf, and my hands were still cold!

  3. It seems to me that Thursday was definitely a day for afternoon napping. Both you and I found ourselves dog tired, and our friend Nathalie would have slept if she hadn't been otherwise engaged.

Lovely painting of the panda bear. Does your daughter keep a supply of water colour paper on hand? Would she appreciate some painting supplies maybe as a Christmas gift? Does she use oils or acrylics? She is very talented.

I'm glad the dental work is done for this year. You have time now to recoup your losses and find a better dental plan for next year.

    1. Yes, Thursday was nap day!

Daughter has a sketch book and sometimes, I do give her art supplies, although, lately, I've just given her money to buy what she will. She uses acrylics, too, but I don't think she's ever used oils.

The dental work wasn't too bad, now that it is over! I am going to see if I can find a plan where more work is covered, although my premiums might be higher and do the deep cleaning and crown, etc., next year.

  4. Glad that all your dental treatment is now over for the time being Bless. I had my filling done on Tuesday and have also changed my dentist to one that is just a 2 minute drive from where we live, so much easier to get to.

I could quite happily live on lighter evening meals like toasties, baked potatoes etc. but the Mum in me feels the need to put a 'proper' meal on the table every night.

Wow. Your daughter is very talented. The panda painting is lovely and the eyes and mouth have expression. Her pasta dish looks delicious as well. A good all rounder as they say :)

    Have a lovely weekend. xx

    1. Yay, you got your filling done! And found a new dentist, too!

I'm sure your family appreciates your efforts with preparing proper meals for them, Suzanne. I have been finding myself feeling hungry by the time I come home around 6:30 p.m. So, I've been having something quick with my cup of tea and then, I'm not hungry for a proper dinner. I guess I am having more of a high tea and that's fine with me. I just need to make sure I am having proteins and more vegetables (I still eat more fruit than vegetables).

That panda looks rather wistful, doesn't it?

  5. Oh that pasta dish looks so yummy and clearly your daughter is very artistic as her water color panda reflects. The apple doesn't fall from the tree.

Glad your dental appointment went well. Do take time to rest up thus weekend.

    1. Thank you, Sandy. I have found myself feeling unusually tired this week, so I am definitely going to rest, this weekend. I do want to get a few things done, as well! I'll have to make a list and make sure I balance the need to get things done with the need to rest!

Hope you have a good day. Any special plans for the weekend?

  7. Glad your dental appointment went smoothly and is done for the year -- that's awesome! Your daughter's pasta dish looks wonderful; I love that particular combination of flavors, too.

I have been reading your grocery posts with interest. We just today stopped into a new-to-me (in that I'd never visited, I knew about it, though) ethnic store because they have fantastic pita bread that I wanted for the hummus we have on hand. A friend shared some with us and I have been wanting to visit since then. There are some things that are very reasonable and some things that are a bit more expensive. This particular store doesn't have produce that I could see, but does carry halal meats and a number of frozen pastry/dough items. They also carry freshly baked lavash which was very exciting to me. We bought a large bag of pita, though, so didn't get the lavash today. I also picked up some couscous -- 5lbs! They didn't have a smaller amount. And some filo pastry dough, to use up my spinach and feta. I am pleased with my purchases and feel that they are good quality, but I am not sure that they are the best prices. I'm really amazed by the prices you are able to find on produce especially.

    1. Thanks, Laura.

What I have found is that grocery prices vary, even among ethnic stores. There is another, much smaller, Armenian grocery store near the dental clinic. I've gone there only a few times, but, their prices seem to be consistently higher than the other, larger, Armenian store. Maybe they buy at wholesale rates from the bigger store and re-sell them, at a higher price, at the smaller store? Perhaps those who shop there don't mind the higher prices because this smaller store is more convenient for them?

Maybe on my next trip to the Armenian grocery store, I will make a note of the regular prices of items I might normally buy. They sell frozen filo dough; I don't buy them that often (only when I make baklava), so I haven't kept tabs on how much they cost. I buy the frozen puff pastry squares; a package of 5 squares are regular priced at $2.50 and go on sale for $1.99. I usually buy 4 or 5 packages when they go on sale for $1.99 and wait out the period when they are regular priced (unless I really, really want some).

They have different varieties of pita bread, too. I like the smaller ones (8") as opposed to the larger ones. They are usually priced at $.99, but, go on sale for $.50, which is when I tend to buy them (they are on sale for that price, this week).

  8. Dental work is the worst for me. I'm very thankful that your work is done. I went on Wednesday, and have no cavities! I am so happy--off the hook for at least 6 more months.

My husband got really good dental insurance with his new job, and it's the first we've had for around 30 years. It's nice to be able to have it, and Rob promptly broke a tooth off this past winter, so we were double thankful for it. He actually used it up to the limit, and now has to get a few more things finished when it re-ups in October.

    1. Congratulations on your no cavities report! I'm glad your husband got good dental insurance. Without it, dental work can get expensive!

  9. Little Bless (sorry ... couldn't resist calling her that as I've done over the years) is very talented! Your mention of the beeping smoke detector brings to mind how very much our pup is afraid of that sound. She pants and wants to escape the high pitched beeping. Hubby and I can't get the fresh battery in it quick enough for her. I do have to admit it's rather annoying. lol.

    1. Thank you, Carolyn. "Little Bless" is all grown up now, but I guess she's still "Little Bless" to some of us. :) Aw, poor puppy, the high pitched beep probably hurts his ears! I try to time the changing of the batteries with the changing of the clocks, but sometimes, the batteries start to beep before that.

Pleased that your dental work is going along okay.
