My Turn to Make Breakfast

It was my turn to make breakfast, this morning.  Daughter had been wanting waffles since she came home, as she doesn't have a waffle iron and she had decided she didn't want one (no room in her tiny studio apartment for yet another specialized appliance).  So, this morning, on her last day home for this visit, I made waffles for brunch and raspberry compote to serve with them, using raspberries I had frozen earlier, a little sugar, a couple of sticks of cinnamon, and a squeeze of lemon juice.

Wish I had some whipped cream to top it!
I made extra waffles and packed them up for daughter to take with her.  Also sent a packet of rice pilaf I had frozen, earlier, and a bag of pecans home with her.

Daughter's flight was in the early afternoon.  I dropped her off at the airport around 1:45 p.m.  As always, it was hard to say goodbye to her.  Especially as we haven't decided when her next visit will be - maybe sometime in August or September.

It was another triple digit day, but, at only 101F, a bit cooler than yesterday.  I had the family room ceiling fan on in the afternoon and someone took advantage of the fan to cool off during a nap:

When it is too hot to lie fully on the towel but still want the softness to pillow his head.

On my way home from the airport, I put gas to the car; $25 worth of gas at $2.69/gal.

Later, I sewed the neckline of the blouse, but didn't finish sewing the armholes.  Instead, I took a nap!  After I woke up, I emptied the waste baskets, took the trash cans to the curb, watered the front garden and indoor plants, washed the dishes, handwashed a couple of clothing items.

Today, I am grateful for:
- Daughter had a safe flight back, despite some turbulence prior to landing, and a safe journey from the airport to her apartment (subway ride and bus ride).
- I was able to make one of her favorite breakfasts and send some extra waffles home with her.
- A slightly cooler day.
- I was able to reconnect with a friend.
- A nice nap on the sofa.

Monday's To Do List:
- Take daughter to airport - DONE
- Finish sewing my blouse - Did some, but didn't finish
- Put away sewing machine, etc., and tidy the dining table - NOT DONE
- Empty waste baskets - DONE
- Take trash cans to the curb - DONE
- Water the indoor plants - DONE
- Water the front garden - DONE
- Video chat with daughter in the evening - DONE
- Put gas to the car - DONE
- Clean the litter box - Will do a little later

Tuesday's To Do List:
- Go to the office
- Bank (didn't go, last week)
- Water the back garden
- Finish sewing the blouse
- Put away washed dishes
- Pay bills
- Clean the bathrooms

There are more things I should do, but, I am going to leave the list fairly short, partly because it is too hot to do a lot!

When daughter went to Atlanta, earlier this month, she arrived at the hotel after 10:00 p.m. on that first night.  It was too late for her to go out to dinner, by herself, so she ordered room service.  A hamburger with sweet potato fries.  The condiments came in tiny little bottles which she knew I would like (she knows me so well!)  She showed them to me when we video chatted and I squealed over them.  So, she brought them home to me as a souvenir of her trip!   Each bottle is about two inches tall and the little jar is about an inch and a half!

Too Cute!
So much cuter than little plastic packets!  I can see myself refilling them with ketchup, mustard, and mayo to take to the office with my lunch!

How was your Monday?   What's your favorite breakfast?

  1. Now I want waffles. However, I gave my waffle iron away when I moved since I hadn't used it years. A trip to IHOP may soon be in my future.

    1. A trip to IHOP sounds good! Frozen waffles aren't bad, either. :)

  2. That's a good idea to take the bottles to the office. Glad your daughter had a safe flight home. Did she enjoy the weekend and the party?

The waffles and raspberries look delicious. I like a poached egg for breakfast especially as Mark makes them :) xx

    1. She had a good time getting together with her friends but, I think, she was a little tired as well. She'll get to rest now, because she doesn't have any friends outside her office, up there.

Definitely a good thing to enjoy poached eggs if Mark makes them. :)

  3. Your waffles look and sound delicious! I really enjoy waffles myself, usually with a side of bacon for that sweet and salty combo. But I don't know that I have a favorite breakfast, per se, more that I crave different things at different times. I do really love warm sticky buns and coffee when I'm visiting my parents, though!

  4. There is nothing better than breakfast prepared by your mother and very thoughtful to make enough waffles to send along with other goodies.

I usually eat oatmeal (porridge) and either a hard boiled egg or poached egg with one slice of toast. I used to also love a half grapefruit but no longer can eat due to the one BP medicine I take.

I loved the small condiments bottles and am sure you will put them to good use. That seems like a lot of condiment for one person and I am sure many are thrown away daily. When did we become such a wasteful society?

Still enjoying our unusual break in the weather so got busy this morning and 1) walked 2) ran the cleaner 3) scrubbed the bathroom, kitchen and family room entrance floor and decided I will make my hubby chili for dinner. I am not so keen so will finish up the leftover beef stew.

Best of luck tomorrow at the dentist. I am sure it will go well.

    1. Oatmeal is one of daughter's favorite breakfasts, which is why I thought she was making herself some when I heard her in the kitchen that morning when she made pancakes.

Aren't those condiment bottles cute? I couldn't bear to throw them away! And that is how I end up with a lot of clutter in my kitchen! I save yogurt containers, glass jars, etc., to reuse!

You've had a busy morning, so far! Good of you to take advantage of the cooler weather to get things done.

Thank you. I will let you know how I fare at the dentist's!

  5. OMG. What cute little condiment jars. I love your idea of taking them to the office.

One of my goals for 2017 was to play with my sewing machine. Have not done that yet. You were able to knock a lot of things off your To-Do list in this incredible heat. I would be more like Dancer in the way I handle the heat, which is not very well.

Glad you had a visit from Daughter this past weekend. Hopefully you will not have to wait too long until the next visit.

    1. Aren't they the cutest little things? I hope you get the opportunity to play with your sewing machine, Susan. Maybe set aside an afternoon and do a project? I think a visit from daughter in late August will be good. I told her to wait until I find out more about my health - if I need further treatments, then, she will be coming down more frequently and will need all her vacation time and so forth.

  6. The waffle looks delicious but the picture of Dancer made me laugh out loud, hahaha. He's so cute! Poor little Dancer was trying to keep cool.

My kids are all obsessed with tiny containers. Every time we go to Cracker Barrel, my daughter has to bring back the tiny bottle of syrup. I'm probably going to find a whole bunch of them when she moves out.

    1. Dancer says it is tough to be wearing a fur coat in this weather! I've read of people who leave the central a/c on for their pets, but I don't have central a/c. So he has to cool off as he can.

If you find a stash of tiny bottles of syrup, you can hot glue them to a wreath and give it to her as a gift, with a box of pancake mix (and maybe a larger bottle of syrup, too). :)

    1. Thanks, Judy. Next time daughter goes away for her work, I am going to tell her to order breakfast and bring me a maple syrup bottle! :D

I've reached the stage of splashing cold water on my face and arms to keep cool! Later in the summer, I'll go to draping a cold towel around my neck! :)

  8. Oh Bless, poor Dancer is trying to keep cool, as you are, and I often put on a cardigan as it is too chilly in the house with our half-hearted summer temperatures!
The waffles look delicious. I got rid of my square waffle iron a long time ago, but the frozen waffles are not quite as nice as homemade ones.
Great little bottles! I have one or two of the miniature jam jars that sometimes show up in gift packs. I could never throw them away! I think I have a few thumbtacks stored in one.

    1. He often sleeps like that to cool off his tummy! You are having a very cool summer and apparently, so is my daughter! 59F in the morning, when she left for work, she said.

Waffles are special, aren't they? I don't make them as often as pancakes because it takes more effort, but they are well worth the effort when daughter gives me a hug and says thank you for making them. :)

    1. They were the cutest little things! I held onto them for some time, but, I think I eventually recycled them. :)
