Happy Halloween!

Front of Card

Happy Halloween!

I made a Halloween card to send to my daughter, using items I had on hand.  I'm calling it an inside-out card, because the front of the card simply says Trick or Treat?  I used a stencil for the lettering.

The inside of the card was decorated with scrapbooking paper and sequins which I glued to the card:

I also made a pocket from some of the Halloween themed paper to hold the check I included in the card, the "treat":

The Pocket

I mailed the card on Friday, taking it to the post office to do so, anticipating it would be delivered today.  But, it seems the post office has decided to play a trick - daughter hasn't received the card, yet.  I guess I should have mailed it on Thursday, instead.

Daughter sent me this picture of her in her costume that she put together using items she had on hand:

Daughter in Costume

She's a strawberry!  She cut out the "seeds" from white felt and glued them to a red sweater that she had; the green bow on her hair is the "stem".  :)  She said she was the only person in costume at her office and someone thought she was a watermelon (wrong color seeds!) and someone else thought she was Minnie Mouse (no!  Minnie has polka dots!)

Today was a sunny day.  I did a load of laundry, dusted my bedroom, started on the paperwork, cleaned out the fridge, cleaned the litter box, swept the bathroom floor, emptied the waste baskets throughout the house, and took the trash cans to the curb for pick up tomorrow.  I will do the day's dishes a bit later.

I didn't hear from the pharmacy, today.  No call saying my prescription was ready.  I really didn't expect to hear from them today, anyway, especially if they had to order the medication.  I'll give them one more day and then call the doctor's office if needed.

I reviewed my October goals for a balanced life and came to the conclusion that I did OK, overall, although there were some areas that didn't get as much attention as I would have liked.  Hope to focus on those areas in November.

Today, I am grateful for:
- Daughter was able to come up with a costume using items she had on hand
- A sunny day
- A working washing machine
- A clean house
- Keeping in touch with family and friends

Tuesday's To Do List:
- Bring trash cans in
- Office work
- More paperwork/filing
- Put away dried laundry
- Do another load of laundry
- Work on November goals

How was your Halloween?

  1. Ha! I was also thinking that she was Minnie Mouse, and I worked for the Walt Disney Co for 15 years, lol! I think she was too skinny for us to mistake her for a strawberry :) All joking aside, that was a very imaginative costume that was appropriate for an office setting and didn't cost her a thing. I love it! One year I made a cat costume for Middle Son by getting long sleeved underwear and shirt from a thrift store and cutting "spots" out of various squares of felt that I had on hand for crafts and sewing them on. A grease pencil for the whiskers and a cheap pair of ears from Dollar Tree and we were in business. I forget what I got for the tail, I'll have to look for the picture. The same year I made a Frankenstein costume for Oldest Son by cutting a milk jug and painting it green for the square-shaped skull, painting my kitchen rubber gloves green for the hands, and using an adult suit jacket that I had gotten at a thrift store for just a couple of dollars for his costume and then face paint. The paint flaked off but he loved his costume and it didn't cost me much. My daughter was a toddler and I had been given a one-piece outfit that made her look like a bumble bee so she just needed some black grease pencil on her nose. Of all the Halloweens, I think that's the one that stands most in my mind because I actually made two out of the three costumes instead of buying them.

Sorry that the post office didn't cooperate with your scheme of having the card get there ON Halloween :( I'm sure she'll appreciate getting the card anyway, especially since you MADE it for her! Have a great Tuesday, Bless.

    1. Wow, you were very creative with making costumes for your kids! My mother sewed an Esmeralda costume for my daughter one year, complete with "gold" coins - wish I had kept it!

Daughter has a selection of costumes, but they are all down here and she forgot to look through them to take one up with her when she was down for the prayer gathering. Her costume was put together at the very last minute (11 p.m. the night before!)

  2. Adorably cute card and love your daughter's creative costume! Would you believe we mailed Halloween and birthday cards on 11/13 and most did not arrive until the 27th ... two weeks later. And an envelope I mailed last week was returned and waiting in our PO Box for no apparent reason (the Post Office staff's words). Am guessing the postal service cutbacks in staff and distribution centers are impacting service. So sad.

    1. Thank you, Carolyn. She put her costume together at the last minute (11 p.m. the night before), so it was a bit rushed. She didn't have any green felt to make a calyx to go on top. I suggested a green scarf, but the only green scarf she had was too pale a color.

The card could have been delivered to the wrong mail box, too. She lives in an apartment building and she often receives mail that is not addressed to her! But she now knows that I mailed her a card and will be on the lookout for it.

  3. What a fun card you made! I love your daughters costume- I knew she was a strawberry right away. She is so creative (I'm sure she gets that from her mama!) ;)
I'm sorry you are dealing with the prescription issue from the doc office/pharmacy. We've had to deal with that from time to time and it is frustrating. I hope you get the call today.
Our Halloween was nice. The kuds dressed as a ninja and a cheerleader. We used things we already had in the house for costumes, which worked out very nicely. My husband has been working 7 days a week for the last several weeks but he was able to come home early and we took the kids trick or treating. We were not out too long- we went down 3 streets this year and the kids both declared that they got more than enough loot so we went home and they counted their candy. Do you know that they each had around 60 pieces of candy in their bags?! Their bags were only about 1/4 of the way full when we stopped trick or treating, but that is enough candy to last them until next Halloween and then some. We often see other kids with bags full to the top. I don't know what they do with all that candy! Our rascals were kind enough to share some of their bounty with us before they crashed in bed- they were very tired from all the excitement. :)

    1. Dawn, it sounds like your little ones had fun! Looks like you, too, were very creative when it came to the costumes. :) Half the fun is coming up with a homemade costume, I think. You have two lovely children who recognize when enough is plenty! I remember you telling us last year, too, that they went to a few houses and then declared they had received enough candy. :) Hope you have a lovely rest of the week.

    1. Judy, she's "into" strawberries and cherries. You can't see from the picture, but she wore a pair of earrings that look like strawberries, too. :)

I just got off the phone with the pharmacy; they claim they've ordered the medication but haven't received it yet. They think it might not be available. :p They said if they don't receive it today, they'll call me. If it is not available, then, I'll have to call the doctor's office to get something else prescribed.

  5. Love the card you made especially the way you've written Trick or Treat and what a lovely surprise to pop a cheque inside.

I think homemade costumes are the best. We had a NY Eve party when I was in my teens with family staying over and very spur of the moment Mum decided it would be fancy dress. The creations people came up with were brilliant. I worse one of my Dad's shirts, a night cap made from a pillowcase and carried a candle and was 'Wee Willie Winkie'. Happy times :) xx

    1. That NY Eve costume party sounds like a lot of fun!

Yes, I think daughter will appreciate the little treat I included in the card. She takes great pride in being self supporting, now that she's earning and paying her own way, but she's on a fairly strict budget since her apartment rent is very high. Not much room for a lot of extras. I didn't send a big check, but there's enough for her to enjoy a couple of cups of coffee from her favorite coffee place or a lunch out.
