Dr. Huey Rootstock Roses |
Dr. Huey is one of the most common rootstock roses that other roses are grafted onto, chosen for its vigorous growth. Sometimes, it will send up suckers which must be removed right away to prevent them from taking over. Sometimes, the grafted rose will die due to one reason or another (drought conditions and extreme heat in my garden) and the rootstock rose will survive and, often, thrive. This is what is happening in my garden. I have at least seven Dr. Huey rose plants growing in my garden after the grafted roses have died. It is considered a rambler rose and it blooms only once a year. Most rose growers, including my gardener friend M, hate them. I, however, am happy to have a drought resistant rose that is not high maintenance.
We had some rain on Saturday morning and I'm sure the garden appreciated the extra watering. The rain had stopped by 9:30 a.m. when I woke up and we had a partly cloudy rest of the day, with some afternoon sunshine and a high of 57F.
I spent a fairly relaxed day on Saturday. I did a load of laundry which I hung up to dry inside the house, ordered and picked up more groceries (more about that in another post), dusted the living room, exchanged emails with friends, chatted on the phone with friend R, watched some videos, and knitted, unraveled, and knitted some more on the sock I am knitting for myself.
Lunch was part of a frozen pizza; dinner was a baked potato with some of the leftover ground beef mixture.
On Saturday, I was grateful for:
- Rain for the garden
- Being able to order and pick up groceries
- A safe drive to the grocery store and back
- Working appliances
- Keeping in touch with friends
Saturday's joyful activity was knitting.
Plans for Sunday include a visit from friend S who wants to borrow some of my collectibles for a cultural display.
How is your weekend coming along?
We had NO rain on Saturday, but that was lovely for 28 of us sharing in a family birthday party in a wonderful garden!
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm so glad that there was no rain on Saturday to spoil the family birthday party in a garden! :)
DeleteKnockout roses are the roses that thrive (basically neglected) here. I love them for that reason.
ReplyDeleteI love it when roses (or any other plants) thrive with neglect! I don't mind that they only flower once a year; they add a touch of green during the rest of the year and I don't have to water them!
DeleteGlad you had a lovely Saturday. The rose is really beautiful
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sharon. I need to catch up on your blog and read about your weekend away.
DeleteI always think that the rain waters our gardens far better than we ever can.
ReplyDeleteThe roses are lovely. Xx
Thank you, Jules. A good shower of rain does the garden a lot of good, doesn't it?
DeleteI think the Dr. Huey rose is fine! I had a friend that removed hers when it reverted. I would've kept it. It's a hardy one for sure and requires little attention. And I like the color.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Debra. M says he doesn't like them because they bloom only once a year, but, I don't mind that.
