My First Cabbage - Picked April 4, 2025 |
I had managed to root the stem of a store bought cabbage and had planted it in the garden.

Cabbage Plant - October 26, 2024 |
It grew two small cabbages, although the leaves never formed a tight head of cabbage.

I kept putting off cutting them, first waiting for the leaves to grow bigger and later, waiting to see if they would form a head of cabbage.

They continued to grow, although not very big.

I loved how they looked, but, when I took this picture at the end of March, I realized that they were starting to bolt! M insisted on harvesting at least one of them, so, on Friday, when he was here to tend to the garden, I let him do the honors! I will cook it this weekend and I told him I'll save a little of it for him to taste. The bolting might cause the leaves to be bitter, but, I'm hoping that they won't be too bitter.
I am grateful for:
- Cabbages from my garden
- M's help with the garden
- M's gift of a packet of corn kernels to plant this year
- Being able to grow vegetables in my garden
- Being able to garden year-round
Today's joyful activity was harvesting the cabbage!
That's exciting. When I saw the title, I wondered if the cabbage was from one that you rooted.
ReplyDeleteThank you, June. Yes, it's from the one that I rooted! I wonder if the stem left in the ground will produce more?
DeleteI do hope the cabbage will be tasty but even if not, it is a free cabbage and served a good purpose, providing fun and looking pretty in the garden! Definitely a project worth repeating, I think!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Lady Ella. Yes, I certainly got my money's worth from that original cabbage! Rooting the stem and watching it grow provided a lot of fun and yay for free plants! LOL. I am leaving the main stem in the ground to see if anything else grows and I've got the stem from the cabbage I picked already in water to see if it will root!
DeleteThat is really cool. I hope it is not bitter, but even if it is you had a successful garden experiment.
DeleteAnne in the kitchen
Thank you, Anne. The homegrown cabbage leaves cooked up just as kale would have - they had a firmer texture and I didn't taste any bitterness. I shredded them finely and sauteed them in a little oil with curry powder, a spice blend used for making seeni sambol, some garlic powder, etc. and lemon juice. Turned out very nicely.
DeleteHow lovely to be able to harvest another cabbage. It was certainly a worthwhile investment
ReplyDeleteIt was fun growing something from a stem that would have been tossed out, normally. Now, I'm going to try and regrow another cabbage from the stem of the cabbage I harvested!
DeleteI would never have thought to do that. What a great idea, and your patience paid off in the end. I hope it's tasty. Xx
ReplyDeleteIt was one of the few times when I've managed to get something to regrow! I've tried it with carrots and lettuce and they didn't do well for me. The sauteed cabbage turned out well and I shared half of it with M. :)
DeleteI think it is neat that you planted the remains of one head of cabbage and got two, even if they are small.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Bushlady. I am happy with the results. So far, it's been 3 for the price of 1 cabbage bought from the store - the original cabbage, the one that I picked and the leaves from the second! I left the rest of the second cabbage to continue bolting with the hope of collecting some seeds. We shall see how that experiment works out!
DeleteOh this is interesting with the cabbages.
ReplyDeleteWe paid .95 a pound for a cabbage yesterday so a good little thing to be able to grow for free!
I will read on and see how it tasted.
The cabbage turned out well, I think. It tasted a little more like kale than cabbage, with a stronger taste. I have M half of what I made with it and he said it was delicious. I have the stem from the cabbage I harvested in water to see if it will root, although it might be too hot to grow cabbages in the summer, here. But, I have left the other cabbage to flower and maybe I'll be able to save some seeds from it for next year?
