April Groceries - Part 3 |
April Grocery Shopping Part 3
After dithering about getting the ham on sale, I decided to go ahead and do so, fully aware of the fact that I will be going over my grocery budget for April. Since I needed a minimum purchase of $25 in order to qualify for the sale price (which was $1.69/lb., not $1.65), I decided to stock up on butter which was also on sale with a digital coupon (I was down to 2 lbs. butter in the freezer; 1 lb. will last me 1-2 months depending how much I bake), milk and bread which I needed, and a whole pineapple which was on sale for $1.99. I put in the order for groceries around 3:00 p.m. and was able to pick up the items at 5:00 p.m.
Here's the receipt:
Order Summary
Item Details
9 Items
* The label on the ham that I was given states 9.36 lbs. and shows the price as $15.82; I'm not sure why I was charged for a bigger ham. Maybe it is because the rest of my groceries didn't quite amount to the minimum order of $25 when the discount for the butter was applied? Or, maybe the store clerk who shopped the order picked up a bigger ham and then saw my request for a smaller ham. In any case, I am not going to argue with the store!
I paid a total of $38.97
I had $29.79 left in my grocery budget and, obviously, I went over budget by $9.18 with today's grocery shopping and I am still wanting to buy the 10 lb. bag of potatoes for $1.99.
I think I will increase my April grocery budget from $100 to $125 and see how that works (the extra $25 will come from the car gas budget).
As always, I am grateful for:
- The availability of groceries
- Free curbside pick-up (with a minimum purchase)
- A safe drive to the store and back
- Being able to stock up when there is a sale
- Being able to increase the grocery budget
What do you think?
I stock up on butter when I see I on offer. The price has gone up significantly in recent months
ReplyDeleteIt makes sense to stock up when things are on offer, doesn't it? The store brand butter (which is what I bought) usually sells for $4.99/lb.
DeleteYou do a really good job of shopping. I have started using home delivery quite often. It is so convenient. xo Diana
ReplyDeleteThank you, Diana. Sometimes, I wonder if I should opt for home delivery, but, for now, curb side pick up is fine.
DeleteI'm not a good shopper, but you certainly are. I didn't know you could freeze butter. I wouldn't have thought to do that. Does it change the texture at all? I tend to stock up on non perishables by buying bulk, like a case of tomatoes, or green beans etc, but not much on items needing to be in the fridge.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sandy. Yes, butter can be frozen and I don't think it changes the texture at all. I stock up on non-perishables, too, although I buy smaller quantities.
DeleteEven though you've gone a little over budget, it makes sense to stock up on items that are on sale at the moment. Although. it's a shame you didn't get the ham for the price you'd hoped. Xx
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jules. Yes, I don't know why I was charged for a bigger ham, but, I am not going to complain. There are small glitches that happen when one doesn't do the shopping in person. But, now, I have ham to share with my daughter on her next visit home. :)
DeleteYou can't go wrong with stocking up on butter at a good price these days. That ham looks yummy.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Bushlady; it feels good to know that I have plenty of butter on hand if I want to make some pie crusts or bake more drop biscuits. :)
DeleteIt's always good to pick up certain things around the holidays. I picked up extra butter too!
ReplyDeleteYes, we have to take advantage of the holiday sales, don't we? I'm glad you, too, were able to stock up on butter. :)
DeleteAll this time I have been wondering what is meant by a stick of butter and this time I think, "Oh good, there's a photo" ... but you only showed the sides! Anyway I have googled it and seen for myself :o)
ReplyDeleteI would have been irritated about that ham charge, specially after all your careful planning/accounting, but sometimes it just isn't worth quibbling ... either you have to do it in the moment, or let it go. It's certainly not worth phoning them up or going back to the shop; main thing is you got what you wanted and still at a better price than usual. Enjoy it!!
Yes, butter here tends to come in 1 lb. packages, each containing 4 individually wrapped "sticks" weighing 4 oz. each. Each stick contains 8 tbsp. and the spoon measurements are marked on the side of the wrapper, so it's easy to cut off the amount needed for a recipe.
DeleteAs for the ham, since it was a pick up and charged to a credit card, I'd have to dispute the charge online and probably jump through a few hoops to get the $2.23 back. Anyway, since they gave me an unexpected $1 off on the bread (it was listed at $1.99, but, the price on the receipt said $0.99) the amount overcharged on the ham comes down to $1.23 and I'm willing to overlook it for the convenience. I can be magnanimous at times! :D
OK, but whether phoning or contacting via the internet, the principle is the same. (I was actually agreeing with you.)
DeleteYes, the principle is the same and I know you were agreeing with me. :)
DeleteYou've got some butter now! Good shopping that sale. You are set for a while.
ReplyDeleteYou do a good job shopping sale items and I'm glad you got the things you wanted to stock up on. I hope you also got the potatoes too because that's a super price for 10 lbs.
I'm the outlier on the ham pricing mishap. I would've gone into the store the next day and gotten my money. I always get a mistake corrected. If it's a pickup, I go into my account online and contact customer service, explain the problem and they issue a credit. It is a simple process.
I've never had any pushback from the store.
It's your money! That's how I feel about it anyway.
My one friend and I were talking about just this thing the other day.
She said she estimates something is wrong on her receipt 75-80% of the time. So that's almost always. She lives in a different state so we don't shop at the same store. But my experience is no where near that. There is rarely a problem but when there is I get it corrected.
Thank you, Debra. Yes, I stocked up on butter and got the bag of potatoes, as well. :)
DeleteMaybe, next time, I will speak up about an overcharge on an item I've ordered and ask for my money back! They did give the bread at a discount ($0.99 instead of $1.99, which was the price on the website when I ordered it), so that offset some of the difference in the ham.
Oh that's good. Mistakes happen in both directions and your bread price cut the ham price in half. :)
DeleteI thought that it evened out in the end. They sometimes substitute more expensive items when they are out of what I've ordered and there was that one time when they gave me 3 boxes of croissants and charged me for only 1 (I had ordered only 1).
