Mid-Week on Wednesday

A Trio of Red Roses

This week seems to be going by very quickly!  It feels like the week just barely started and here it is Wednesday and mid-week, already! So far, the weather has been beautiful - sunny and warm with the highs in the 80s!  My kind of weather!

On Monday, I more or less finished cleaning the kitchen.  I scrubbed under the burners on the other side of the stove, cleaned the top of the stove hood (the under side, with the extractor vent and cover, was not done - that's for another day!), and swept and mopped the floor.  Towards the end, my hands were starting to cramp, but, I was happy to get the kitchen cleaned to the extent that I did.

I also updated the freezer inventory, cleaned the small shelves on the freezer door, and reorganized them a bit (found a package of baklava, leftover from the almsgiving, that I had forgotten I had!)  Then, I  cleaned the fridge, wiping down each shelf; I had to toss some milk that had gone sour and a table spoon or two of yogurt I had been saving to use as a starter that had grown moldy because I didn't make the yogurt!  I don't like food waste, but, sometimes, it happens.

I had planned to go to the library to return a book I had borrowed (and see if I could re-borrow it because I hadn't finished reading it) but, the library automatically renewed it for me, so I didn't need to go to the library, after all.

Later, I took the trash cans to the curb and watered the back garden.

Brunch was a scrambled egg, bacon, and toas; dinner was turkey and vegetable soup with toast; snacks included a banana and the last 2 banana muffins (from the freezer)

On Tuesday, I took it easy.  The day started off cleaning up some Dancer mess up (he had left a couple of unwanted gifts by my bed!) I brought the trash cans in, checked on the garden, watered the house plants, watched some videos, phoned one of my friends, and started to knit a second pair of bright pink socks.  I also checked the up coming week's grocery ads.  The Armenian store is having a one day special on eggs, next Tuesday - 1 doz. organic jumbo brown eggs for $4.49, just in time for Easter.  I will definitely be making a trip there on Tuesday morning!  Eggs at the regular supermarket are still priced at $6.99/doz. for large eggs; but, they are offering a full half ham for $1.69/lb. with an additional $25 purchase.  I am debating if I want to get one to portion out and freeze.  Then, we can have ham sandwiches over the summer or ham and eggs for brunches.

Brunch was a banana sandwich (sliced banana on buttered bread - a childhood treat); dinner was rice and leftover curries (the last of the chicken curry, sauteed homegrown cabbage, boiled beetroot, and cucumber salad). Snacks included a small bowl of turkey soup and some crackers.

Which brings us to today, Wednesday.  M was here to tend to the garden and after watering the garden he prepared one of the planting beds to plant the wax bean seeds I had bought.  We will plant some of them on Friday (the package says to plant every 2 weeks for a continuous harvest over the growing season).  We will need to figure out a way to keep the mourning doves from eating the bean seedlings!

I made tuna salad sandwiches for brunch.  Dinner will probably be leftover rice and curries.

This week, I am grateful for:

- The sunny and warm weather
- Automatic library book renewal
- What I was able to accomplish
- M's help with the garden
- Garden flowers
- Fresh lemonade made with lemons from the garden
- Phone calls and emails with friends

Joyful activities have included spending time in the garden, knitting, watching videos, and reading.

Plans for Thursday include tidying the family room and maybe some sewing.

How is your week coming along?

  1. It sure makes things easier with automatic renewals for library materials. They keep track of things so I don't have to. :)

  2. Hi Bless! I hope the wax bean planting goes well and the mourning doves will leave them be. Thanks as always for such a lovely blog post. I'm always busy, it seems, but when I get the chance I read your blog and all of the posts I've missed in the interim, even if I don't comment often. Have a good rest of the week and enjoy your book!

  3. Lovely roses! You have been busy, even with taking a day easy! You got through some of the small and some not so small tasks needing done. Today I got a new cell phone, much needed as my previous one was 7 years old! It still worked, but I was worried it would crash just when tariffs would send prices sky high, and my provider would get rid of the free upgrade offer.

    1. Thank you, Celie. I had a spurt of energy over the weekend and on Monday, but, now, I'm taking it easy, again!
Glad you were able to take advantage of the free upgrade and get your new phone! I heard on the news that the tariffs have been delayed by 90 days, but, it's better to get the things you need as soon as possible.

  4. What beautiful roses. How nice to find some baklava in your freezer!
It is always a pity to waste even a little food but as you say, it happens. I had to cut off the outside of two rutabagas to get to the good stuff inside, which I cut into small cubes to add to a vegetable soup. I'm glad I could save some. Good luck with your beans!

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. The roses are lovely, aren't they? Finding the baklava was a very nice surprise!
I am glad you were able to salvage some of the rutabagas and, no doubt, you'll compost the parts you had to cut off and that would eventually be put to good use in the garden.

  5. I am always jealous of the citrus you can pick from your yard. Fresh lemonade sounds so good.

    1. I am very thankful to have citrus growing in my garden. I was able to make some freshly squeezed orange juice to share with my daughter before she left and we both agreed that it was the best orange juice we've had. The oranges are coming to an end, but, there are still plenty of lemons. :)

  6. Your red roses look very pretty. And Wednesday brings you around to finishing up your kitchen. I'm sure you are pleased with that task done. The trouble is, why doesn't it ever stay done? lol
That's a good price for the eggs at your Armenian store. Our adds haven't come yet. I am hoping for an egg sale also.
One of the videos I watch, the lady buys a lot of those canned hams at discount stores. I think hers is called Dollarama (in Canada).
She always keeps them on hand and uses them in stir fries and other things. Pretty convenient to store and to have on hand.

    1. Thank you, Debra. I love those red roses.
Ha, yes, the kitchen will stay done only when I stop cooking and eating! Maintenance is the key and I am not very consistent with my maintaining.
I never thought I'd say that $4.50 was a good price for a dozen eggs, but, for these days, that is a good price, isn't it?
I used to buy those canned hams, but, I haven't looked for them, recently. They are shelf stable and convenient to store. Maybe I should get a couple and keep in the emergency supplies stock. Thank you for the suggestion. :)

    1. Thank you, Sharon. This is the time for roses in my garden.
I managed to get a few things done around the house this week. Still need to do more, but, my energy supply ran out! LOL.

  10. The roses are gorgeous! And spending time in the garden sounds perfect. I've a few things to catch up on today, but as I'm feeling a little under the weather, I won't be doing as much as I'd hoped. Xx

    1. Thank you, Jules; I love seeing the roses bloom and I love spending time in the garden. I'm sorry you are feeling a bit under the weather; take care of yourself and rest. Stuff that needs doing can wait another day or two for the most part.

  11. How many times does the library (auto)renew a book before they ask for it back/want proof you haven't lost it/fed it to the dog?

    1. Apparently, the library will auto renew it three times! Then, you have to return it and, provided there is no hold put on it because someone else wants to borrow it, you can borrow it, again.
