Phone Saga Part 2 on Wednesday

Wireless Phone Device "Black Box"

This is the wireless phone device that plugs into the wall outlet and my home phone charging base connects to this box and gets plugged into the outlet, as well.  You can see that the phone service indicator light is red.  Yesterday, the battery charge light was also red and blinking.  None of the phone signal strength lights are lit.  This is how the phone device looked this morning.  I tried to reset it, again, this morning, but, the phone service indicator light remained red.

Salvador from the Mexico City phone service center called me this morning and apologized for not calling me back on Tuesday evening.  He asked if I had a chance to discuss things with my daughter and if I had decided what I wanted to do.  I asked him a couple of questions about the basic services offered as part of the new landline and then, told him and I wanted to go to the phone store in the afternoon to see if they had a newer device.  He told me that, even if I get a newer device, the phone company no longer services these devices.  But, he said, maybe I could buy a new SIM card and insert that and see if that helps.  I thanked him and he said he will call me back later.

Today being Wednesday, it was gardener M's day to tend to the garden in the morning, so my plan was to be here when M arrived, then, drop a few things off at friend R's place, and then, go to the phone store.  M arrived in the late morning as usual, and we spent some time chatting, as usual, and he cut the grass in the back garden (he actually had to use his lawn mower, as opposed to the weed whacker!)  He also brought me a variegated succulent cutting which he potted up before he left.

After he left, I had some leftover milkrice with friend S's chicken curry for brunch.  Then, I gathered all the clothes I was taking to friend R (some of the clothes that my cousin had given us, which my daughter and I decided we didn't want; R will pick what she wants and then, probably send the rest to Sri Lanka for her daughters and granddaughter to select what they want and give away the rest).  I also took her some pastries I had kept aside to give her and a pair of compression socks I had bought for her to try.

Then, I gathered the file folder with all the phone related literature I wanted to take to the phone store (the user manual for the phone device, etc.) and unplugged the device to take it with me (so they could insert the SIM card for me).  Of course, all the various indicator lights went off when I unplugged the device, but, then, the backup battery kicked in, I heard a familiar beep that the phone makes after power goes off and comes back on, and the lights lit up, again, including the service indicator light and signal strength lights!  I quickly plugged the device back into the outlet and the lights stayed on!

All Green Lights All the Way!

Oh, my goodness!  I picked up the phone and there was a dial tone!  I called my aunt to see if I could make a call and yes!  I could make a call!  I could access my voicemail!  I had my phone service back on!  The first call I received was a telemarketer, and I let it go to voicemail, but, I was receiving calls!  I hadn't even gone to the phone store to see about a new SIM card!  I was so happy!

I decided that I didn't need to go to the phone store, after all!  I am not sure how long the service connection will work, but, I will not worry about replacing the phone service until it goes off again!  And if it goes off again, then, I'll know to go through the different steps I took to reset the phone and if it still doesn't work, then, I'll go to the store to see about a new SIM card!  And that's what I told Salvador when he called me back in the evening to see if I bought a new SIM card!  I told him that the phone was working now and I didn't need to buy a new SIM card.  He then said that maybe there had been a service outage in my area, even though there was no indication of it on the website.  Yes, my daughter had already checked to see if there was a service outage in my area and the website hadn't said anything.  But, it could just be that they hadn't updated their website.

I thanked Salvador for his assistance and told him that I will give him a good review if I receive a survey from the phone company about my recent experience with their customer service.  He seemed very pleased about that!  I was very happy that I decided to wait and not cancel my current home phone service and get a new landline or cell phone line at a higher rate than what I am currently paying.  If I continue to have problems with the services, I'll consider making a change, later.  But, right now, I have a working home phone!

In the afternoon, I took the clothes and other items to friend R and dropped them off (it was a curbside visit and I had my mask on).  Then, I came home and relaxed.

I had a call from Dancer's pharmacy regarding the change in his medication and I was told that the medication should be ready tomorrow (Thursday) and they will call me when it was ready for pick up.  As I told my friend, I might treat myself to a doughnut when I go to pick up the medication; I feel like I could do with a treat after all the stress about the phone!  All evening, I've been checking the phone device to make sure that the lights were still on!  LOL.

On Wednesday, I also gave Dancer his flea prevention medication (I usually give it to him on the 1st of the month, but, I had other things on my mind with the phone being out of order).

Dinner was some leftover chicken croquettes from the Cuban bakery; daughter was going to take them back with her, but, she changed her mind and took only the chicken empanadas.

On Wednesday, I was grateful for:

- Having my home phone service back on again!
- I didn't have to change any of the phone services!
- M tending to the garden and bringing me another cutting of a plant for my garden
- A safe drive to friend R's and back
- Working appliances!  Did I mention my phone is working again?

Wednesday's joyful activities included chatting on the home phone with family and friends!  I was even happy to get a couple of "suspected spam" calls (which I didn't answer)!  But, it was joyful to hear the phone ring!  LOL!

Plans for Thursday include picking up Dancer's medication when ready, doing some house cleaning and tidying, and some laundry.  I also need to catch up on some blog reading and commenting, as I am a bit behind on that!

How was your Wednesday?  What are your plans for Thursday?

  1. The unreliability of phone services is not good - especially for older or sick folk who live alone. I hope your line continues to work!

    1. Thank you, Angela. I'm very glad that the phone is working now. But, I'm also glad that I have a cell phone as a backup!

  2. I swear that there is something like magic in computers and phones and stuff - you do all the sensible things and nothing happens but unplug it and then plug it back in and it's like someone has waved a magic wand.
    The succulents sound nice.

    1. The thing is, I had already unplugged and plugged the device several times, already, and nothing had changed! I don't know what made it work this time around, but, I agree, it's magic! :D

  3. What a relief your home phone is working again. Such a simple fix unplugging it and plugging it back in again and who knew that would work! I read the comments on your previous post and I had the same result last year, both my phone service provider and my internet provider reduced my monthly costs but tied me in to new contracts which is another bridge I will have to cross when the landlines are switched off.

    1. It is, indeed, a big relief, Eileen. I had unplugged and plugged it back in several times, earlier! I had even plugged it into a different outlet, just in case something was wrong with the original outlet. But, the previous attempts didn't do anything. Not sure what made it work this time!
That's good that the service providers reduced your monthly costs, even if they tied you to a new contract. Hopefully, there won't be any problems if and when the landlines are switched off.

  4. Salvadore is a gem. I've never had help call me back that many times, or even once. Here's to a long lasting phone service!

  5. Well, the phone regenerated itself somehow. That’s amazing. Now you have time to consider all your options before making a purchase.
Oh Dancer, you could make my spirit animal. I had a thyroidectomy in 2010 and my thyroid hormone replacement pills are constantly being recalibrated. I am currently on a dose which requires one pill each morning except Sundays when it’s a half tablet. Each dosage is a different color pill so they don’t get mixed up, but the dose now is light gray and it looks like another pill I take. My next blood test will be Tuesday, then we’ll see what my dosage is. I feel you Dancer. 😽

    1. It really is a wonder how the phone decided it was time to work, again! It's still working, so, I am happy! In the meantime, I will start giving out my cell phone number to places like the doctor's office, etc., as my primary contact number!
Oh, I hope your next blood test results will be good and your thyroid medicine dosage won't need to be adjusted yet again! The vet is pushing for radiation treatment for Dancer, but, the procedure requires boarding him for several days during the treatment and isolating him for several more days when he first comes home and I am not sure if either he or I will be up to all that trauma! This cat hates a closed door!

    2. Bless, I feel I need to comment on this. Imagine how stressed poor Dancer would be not to mention the expense for you. Please give radiation treatment a lot of thought.

    3. Thank you, Eileen. I really appreciate you commenting on this! Yes, my daughter and I have discussed it and we both feel that Dancer will be traumatized by such an experience! Putting aside the expense (and it would be an expensive treatment), he will be bewildered and stressed by the whole experience! As it is, he is not a cat who is comfortable with strangers. If anyone so much as knocks at the front door, he will run and hide under my bed and he'll stay there for as long as people are in the house. He will be stressed the whole time he's being boarded with strangers handling him. He gets those panic attacks every time I take him to the vet's unless he is sedated! And he'll not understand why he'd have to go away and stay away and be locked up in a room and not be allowed to roam the house for days after he comes home! Both my daughter and I feel that the radiation treatment might not be the best thing for him at his age. We'd rather treat him with the topical medications for as long as he is comfortable and then, we'll deal with the consequences of that.

  6. Wonderful that the phone is working again! Hurrah! It's so annoying when things conk out for no reason and then refuse to behave. Like some of your readers in the previous post, I still have a landline and use it as my main phone. I got my mobile for emergencies and have stuck to that. Mobile reception is not great where I live, and anyway I don't want to become one of those people who is always stuck to their phone, checking it, fiddling with it, not truly present in the moment. And if I am out and about I don't want to be bothered for non-urgent matters. I will get back to people soon enough. Last year BT sent me a letter saying they were coming to move my landline to an internet-based service "thank you for making an appointment..." I didn't! I made sure I was out when they came and they have not tried to come back. My parents have been moved over to the new system and have had no end of problems, needing to upgrade their home phones and then losing the function every time the internet goes down. They are on expensive mobile packages (PAYG, based on the fact they almost never use them) so having to rely on those as a back-up is far from ideal.
Here ends a long and boring comment...

    1. Not a boring comment, at all, Ella, and you know I like long comments. :) I, too, use my home phone as my main phone and I return missed calls as soon as I can. I'm sorry your parents were switched over to the new system and have experienced problems with it. New technology is not always better!

I know! Imagine having to mow the grass! LOL. I almost took a photo of M mowing to keep as proof that it actually happened! :D

  7. Yay for the phone working after all, even if you did get a telemarketer call. That also proved that the system was working okay. I found myself thinking of those photos of the old wall phones with a handset on a cord and I think there was something you had to wind as well. No telemarketers or spam calls back then!
I hope you buy that doughnut and enjoy it!

    1. Thank you, Bushlady; I'm actually happy to receive the spam and telemarketer calls (the phone identifies them as such and I usually don't pick up when the number being displayed is one I don't recognize).
I have seen photos of those old phones! I grew up with a rotary dial phone and a home phone was considered a luxury at the time. :)

  9. Oh good - I'm so glad your phone has started working.
When something like that happens and it gets fixed (or fixes itself in this case) it feels like you were given a gift doesn't it? Instead of just having what you used to have anyway.
Reading through your responses I see some talk about Dancer.
I'm sure the decisions you and your daughter make about his care will be the best ones to make with all considerations given to the situation.

    1. Yes, it felt wonderful to have the phone service back! But, unfortunately, it was a very short-lived success!
Yes, the vet would like Dancer to have radiation treatments, but, apart from the cost of the treatment (which is considerable), there is required boarding at a facility for several days and he will have to be isolated for several more days once he comes back home because he would be "radio active"! Daughter and I think the whole experience of being boarded, etc., would be traumatic for him and it would be difficult for me to keep him locked up in a room at home! He hates a closed door and even this morning, I had to open the door to the spare bedroom (which I keep closed at night, when the heater is on, to cut down on heating unused rooms) so he could explore it and decide everything was OK! He would be crying the whole time and I'd hate that!

  10. Yay! for a working phone. And I do hope you treated yourself to that doughnut. Xx
