On the First Day of April

Surprise Dinner from Friend S

On the first day of April, I made my usual milkrice for breakfast and I cut fresh flowers (red roses and jasmine) to place at the altars and on the mantelpiece next to my mother's picture.

Then, it was time to drive daughter to the airport.  There was a long line of vehicles to get to the airport. with people traveling after spring break and Easter, but, we had left in plenty of time and daughter wasn't late for her flight.  I dropped her off in front of the Departure's building and drove back home.  Later, she texted me to say that her check in luggage was 12 pounds over the weight limit and she had to repack her suitcase, transferring most of the food items I had given her from the suitcase to her carryon luggage (her backpack and purse).  She also said that the TSA agent had asked her if she was going on a camping trip, after inspecting her carry on luggage, because she had so much food with her, but, she had laughed and explained that she was going back to her apartment after visiting her mother and her mother always gives her food to take back.

Daughter had a safe flight and journey to her apartment.  Then, she unpacked her suitcase and put away the food, went to the corner convenience store to buy a small container of half and half for her coffee, and went to chorus practice.

I came home after dropping her off at the airport and realized that my home phone was not working!  It had stopped working, yesterday, but, my daughter was able to reset it and it worked until this afternoon.  She talked me through the steps to reset it again, this evening, but, it is still not working and I think it is due to an equipment malfunction.  I need to call the phone company, later, and put in a service request.

There was also an email from the vet about Dancer's blood test results and apparently, he needs his thyroid medication dosage increased.  She will call it into the pharmacy and wants to see him again in two weeks.

I had planned to visit friend R in the afternoon, but, I spoke with her (at least my cell phone worked!) and we decided to postpone the visit till Wednesday.

Later in the evening, my Sri Lankan friend S (not neighbor S), and her husband visited and brought me the lovely rice and curry meal pictured above!  There's basmati rice in the covered container, fish curry and dhal in the small plastic bags, coconut sambol, cashew curry, chicken curry, and fried eggplant in the divided container!  As usual, friend S said it was nothing much, just some rice and a few curries!  She asked if she could have some curry leaves and we picked a bag of curry leaves and some lemons for her to take back.

After they left, I took the trash bins out to the front of the driveway to be emptied, tomorrow.  Later, I called and chatted with aunt C (I had called her, earlier, and left a message explaining that my home phone was not working, so she wouldn't worry if she tried to call me and couldn't get through to me).

After dinner, I video chatted with daughter for a bit.  She has to go into the office, tomorrow, so, she'll have an early start to the day.  I, too, want to wake up early so I can call the phone company to book a service call.

Weekly Meal Planning:

I didn't do any meal planning when daughter was here as we were treating ourselves to take out and snacks, etc.  I was planning to go back to meal planning this week, but, with friends bringing me dinner and plenty of assorted leftovers in the fridge, I think my meal plan for the first week in April will be...leftovers!  LOL.

On the first day of April, I was grateful for:

- The start of a new month
- Daughter had a safe flight and journey back to her apartment
- Cell phones!
- Friend S bringing me dinner
- The vet contacting me with Dancer's blood test results

Joyful activities on April 1st included spending the morning with daughter before she had to leave, making milkrice and picking fresh flowers for the altars, and a visit from friend S and her husband, bringing me dinner!

Plans for Tuesday include calling the phone company to report the home phone malfunction.

How was your first day of April?  What are your plans for Tuesday?

  1. We had the family for lunch, I cooked a roast chicken and lots of different vegetables. (easier to get the children to eat a rainbow of small portions red cabbage, orange carrot, yellow sweetcorn, green broccoli, coppery parsnips, golden roast potatoes) So now we are having a leftovers week too. The sun is shining, I shall do some washing and hang it outside to dry in the sunshine

  2. Wow!! Lots of lovely food there! I hope you enjoy it all. I'm glad your daughter got home safely - it's funny about the security asking about all the food. :-) Love FD xx

    1. Thank you, FD; yes, the food was wonderful (friend S is a good cook). I guess the TSA person was amused to see all the food that daughter was taking back! :D

  3. I'm glad your daughter had a safe journey home and it made me smile about her having to explain that her mother gives her so much food to take home and no she wasn't going camping :) Your friends are so generous with their gifts of food and it all looks delicious. I hope you can get your home phone sorted. I have a landline and mobile phone but use the landline more probably because I am at home more. However landlines are going to be turned off soon so I'll be relying on the internet connection to make phone calls. Apparently not many people have landlines anymore! I hope Dancer will feel better once his medication is increased, you take good care of him.

    1. Thank you, Eileen; yes, I sent chicken curry and beef curry, roast pork and baked salmon, some spicy sausages, fresh produce and pastries with my daughter. Enough food that she doesn't have to grocery shop and cook this week, at least until the weekend when she is free to shop. :)
My friends make sure that I am not going hungry! LOL. They are such a blessing to me!
I am still without phone service; looks like I'll have to get a new phone line installed. I usually use my home phone for most of my calls, but, I think they are trying to discontinue land lines here, too.
I, too, hope that Dancer will do better with a dosage increase.

  5. It’s great that your daughter made it home without problems. I have seen news stories all week about crowded airports. I can imagine the agent’s amusement at the food from mom!
What nice meals you will have with the food gifts from your friend S. Leftovers are always my favorite meal plan. I’ve been known to stretch them out even further with vegetables or rice. Perhaps you’ll be eating some fusion cuisine this week. 😉
I hope your leg and head heal and wishes for Dancer and his thyroid treatment. 🐾

    1. Thank you, Celie. Friend S's food was delicious! I hope Dancer does well on the new dose. The vet did bring up another type of treatment, but, I'm not sure if I want to try that at this point in time.

  8. I'm glad your daughter had a safe trip home. How funny that she was asked if she was going camping! Your latest food gift looks delicious. It seems that whenever food goes out of your house, more comes in!
I hope you can get your home phone working properly soon.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. Daughter had quite a bit of food in her carry on luggage, including coffee, nuts, protein bars, fresh fruit, etc. I suppose they are similar to stuff people take when going camping? The "food go-round" is still going strong! :) The phone saga continues!

  9. I'm so glad your daughter made it back home again. She sounds like me - I always end up with lots of food coming back from England lol.
It always makes me laugh that they let you repack and take that weight onto the plane but won't let you leave it in your case. It's all going on the plane lol.

How nice that your friend brought you a meal! Hope you can get the phone fixed.

    1. Thank you, Sharon. Yes, she always gets to take lots of food back, with her. :D I know what you mean about the airlines letting you repack to redistribute the weight. Like you said, it's still all in the plane, whether stowed under the seat, in the overhead compartment, or in the luggage hold!
It was lovely of my friend to bring me a meal!
Still trying to get the phone to work! Apparently, they no longer provide service to the type of phone I have!

  10. I love that you had a longer than expected visit with your daughter. Even better that you both indulged in take out and snack foods.
And the best was a friend bringing food to share with you.

    1. Thank you, Anne. It was lovely to have daughter extend her stay. And we enjoyed having some take out and snacks. But, as you say, the best was a friend bringing more food to share! The fridge is as full as ever!

  11. Yum - that food from friend S really looks good. Obviously, it's long gone at this point but I'm sure you have fond memories of eating it :)
Oh gosh, more thyroid medicine for Dancer. How was his weight at his last visit?
That's a funny story about your daughter and her packed food making her luggage overweight.
Glad she had room in her carryon!

    1. The food was very delicious and I enjoyed it. :)
They didn't say anything about his weight and I didn't ask. I don't think it has changed much, but, I'll make it a point to ask on the next visit.
Yes, we had no idea that the food would weigh so much! Especially since she didn't take all the food I bought for her to take!

  12. That dinner looks delicious!
I'm so glad your daughter enjoyed a safe journey home, although I must admit I did chuckle at the luggage/food situation. X

Thank you; yes, it was funny how the food put her over the weight limit! I had told her to bring down her carry on case, as well, but, she didn't, thinking her big suitcase would be big enough. Now she knows that mother knows best! :D
