Hello Autumn!

Unidentified Fungus Growing in a Planter

Or, is it Fall?  No matter what word you use to describe this season, the first day of the season was a degree hotter than the last day of Summer!  Yes, today's high was 99F!  According to the forecast, we can expect it to be at least 10 degrees cooler, tomorrow, though!  I didn't do anything special to celebrate the beginning of Autumn, though.

Today, M stopped by to water the garden and I wrote a blog post introducing Clark, the mango sprout!  Later, I did two loads of laundry and cleaned the litter box.  I also practiced playing the piano for 15 minutes (just going through some of the early pieces, trying to see if I still remember the notes and feel up to sitting at the piano for any length of time to figure out when I might be able to resume lessons).  Had a quick chat with friend R, too.

Double Colored Rose

Today, I am grateful for:

- Sunny autumn days
- M watering the garden
- A mango seed sprouting!
- Being able to play the piano for a short while
- Water for the garden, for doing laundry, etc.

Today's joyful activity was seeing the mango seeds sprouting!

Plans for tomorrow include calling the clinic again because I have not received the copy of the lab work order they were going to email me, cleaning the kitchen, putting away the laundry, and some cooking.

How was your first day of Autumn?  Did you do anything special to celebrate the day?  What are your plans for tomorrow?

  1. So how did you piano practice go? Could you still play the earlier pieces or were they more challenging than you thought? I hope that sitting at the piano hasn't caused any discomfort and that you feel ready to resume lessons.

    1. It went well enough, I think, considering I haven't played in months. I played an etude, Arabesque, and Hedwig's Theme (the the first part). I made a few mistakes and was very slow in my tempo, but, I muddled through! I need to practice earlier in the day when there is more natural light - and maybe switch my glasses to a stronger pair! I will play through those same pieces today and then, try some newer pieces, over the weekend. I don't feel any ill effects from sitting at the piano, but, I think I will need to place a pillow on it for longer practice sessions! :D

  2. Fungus can take on such interesting and beautiful shapes.

Soon all of the fruit in your garden will have names. :)

    1. I thought this particular fungus was very pretty! I tried to identify it, but, I'm not very good at identifying fungi!

Ha, ha, or, at least the trees! :D

  3. I use the word fall rather than autumn nearly all the time. We had a lovely temperature dip and it honestly feels like fall. It probably won't last but that is ok!

    1. I think we say fall more often than autumn, here, in the US. :) Glad you are enjoying cooler, fall-like temperatures, right now. It makes a pleasant change, doesn't it?

  4. I've never seen a fungus quite like that, it is so intriguing. We usually get plenty around this time of year and with all the rain that is continuing, I'm sure plenty are planning to pop up in the yard. I'm hoping for a giant puffball. We had a couple on the edge of the driveway last year and one got run over and I didn't know they were edible so I left the other till it was too far gone to harvest.

    1. It's the first time I've seen this type of fungus, myself! It almost looked like a flower! Oh, I hope you find another giant puffball growing and can harvest it! Maybe the one you left unpicked would have sown its spores and there will be many puff balls to harvest!

  6. Well I have been making a concerted effort to call it Autumn instead of Fall, which I read somewhere is only really used in North America. That rose is certainly lovely.

    1. I've read that "fall" was common around the time of the first colonists and then, after Independence was declared, it was promoted as American English as opposed to British English when the newly formed United States were trying to establish themselves as a new country. :)

I really like the flowers on that one rose plant as there are no two alike!

  7. I am not a summer person really so the arrival of Fall and cooler weather is welcome to me.
I have cereal bowls that are sort of square (although they bow out at the top)
Each side has different colored flowers on them. To me the colors of the flowers align with the seasons. On the first day of the new season I turn the stack of 3 bowls in my cabinet to face forward with the new season's flowers.
The flowers are orange on the fall side. So silly I guess but I like doing it and have done it for years.
Another thing I do on the first day of fall is put out some amber chandelier drop crystals my mother gave me years ago for a chandelier in the home I was living in at the time. They look pretty on the dining room table in a little pile :)

    1. Debra, I like how you greet the arrival of Fall! I used to put up some fall decorations, then, I stopped doing that for some reason. Maybe I'll make an effort, this year, and do something! :)
