Christmas Placemats

56steps wanted to see what the table in the family room looked like with the Christmas placemats:

Family Room Table

Red plaid table cloth and the Santa placemats I sewed several years ago (mid 1990s, I believe), using a preprinted fabric (both table cloth and placemats bought during after Christmas sales).  I outline quilted around Santa's face and hat.

The mittens on either side are pockets to hold the napkins and cutlery.  I have red plaid napkins, too, but this time I used the floral napkins that match the holiday chair pads I put on the chairs:

There are matching toss pillows, too, in the floral fabric, for the family room sofas.  The napkins, chair pads, and toss pillows were bought during an after-Christmas sale, one year, at least 20 years ago, if not more!

The placemats are backed with the "cool Santa" fabric I bought at or around the same time as the printed placemats.  This is the fabric that I used to sew one of the sets of pillowcases, earlier this year, and there are still some small scraps of it leftover!

The backing fabric
When I bought the preprinted placemats fabric, I bought 3 panels (each panel had 4 placemats printed on it).  I gifted two sets of 4 placemats, that year, and kept one set for myself.  I bought two preprinted apron panels, too, which featured the same Santa face and mittens.  I sewed the aprons and included them with the placemats I gifted.

I haven't taken down the Christmas china, yet.  Might do that after the almsgiving.

Hope you enjoyed seeing my Christmas placemats.

  1. I really like your placemats. And I love how you've had them for so long.
I always enjoy getting out the Christmas things that I've had over the years.
You did such a nice job on them.
    Thanks for posting the pictures.

    1. Thank you, Live and Learn. The pockets are a nice touch, aren't they? I remember my mother being quite taken up with them!

  3. The placemats are gorgeous. You're inspiring me to have a go myself ... assuming there are cheap Christmas fabrics in the January sales.

    1. Thank you, Eileen. I hope you'll find some good deals on fabric, after Christmas. Already, the fabric stores here have Christmas fabric on sale for 50% off.

  4. I am loving those place mats. What a great idea for the pockets. This makes such a wonderful gift, but I am so glad you kept a set of place mats for yourself. Making them reversible was also a great idea. I might use this idea for next year, I love it so much. The floral fabric is very pretty and I would love to see them as toss cushions for the sofa. Are they out year round?

    1. Thank you, Susan. I, too, am glad I kept a set for myself. The floral fabric is Christmas-y, with roses, poinsettia, and holly on a black background. I bring them out at this time of the year and put them away after the holidays. They live in an old suitcase I store in my closet the rest of the year!

  7. So festive and beautifully coordinated. And what a clever design to have the mittens serve as silverware holders. Lovely!

    1. Thank you, Carolyn. Yes, I love the mitten pockets for the cutlery and napkins. If one had different placemats, one could get actual mittens and use those, instead! :)
