Update on Viruses

"We don't like viruses"

Thank you, everyone, for your kind comments, concerns for my daughter, and well wishes.

My daughter took an ibuprofen last night for her fever and she texted me at 5:00 a.m. to say that she checked her temperature and it was normal.  It was still normal earlier this afternoon and we are hoping it will remain so.  She reported her test results to her medical center and they had said it sounds like she has mild to moderate symptoms and to isolate for 5 days, test herself, and take it from there.  She says she feels fatigued and has a sore throat.  She made herself some soup for lunch:

Cabbage and Wakame Miso Soup

Yesterday, I received notifications like these popping up on my computer (after I tried to open that link in my friend's message; by the way, her husband had died, but, earlier in the year):

 Virus Notification Pop Ups

I would delete the notifications, but, they kept popping up, one after the other.  I guess they were designed to get me to click on them to get the virus protection software being recommended, which would probably have led to installing the virus, itself!

My daughter said they were just trying to get me to click on them, that as long as I didn't open them, the computer would be OK.  But, it was rather unnerving to have the notifications pop up.

I tried to go back to using my old lap top, but, for some reason, it wouldn't let me have access to the internet.  My daughter tried to help, talking me through all the steps to disconnect and reconnect the lap top to the internet service, but, it didn't work.  Apparently, the computer is too old and doesn't have the required capacity!

Instead, my daughter talked me through the steps to run a virus scan on the newer laptop (the one I am using now, which is the one with the virus notifications).  Daughter had me run both an online virus scan and an off line virus scan and they were both full file scans.  Neither detected a virus!  Whew!  That was a big relief!  Then, my daughter talked me through how to turn off the pop-ups.  I have now disabled all pop ups on my computer and I did something that cleared my history of sites visited, etc.

A big thank you to my daughter for taking me step by step through the process while she was not feeling well!  But, it meant I didn't have to take the computer to the store for a check up!

Today, I am grateful for:
- Daughter is experiencing moderate symptoms, so far
- No viruses detected on the computer
- Daughter's help with running the virus scans
- Everyone's well wishes
- Being able to go online, again!
Today's joyful activity was getting the computer checked!

Hope your weekend is off to a good start.

  1. I am glad your daughter seems to have a mild to moderate case of Covid. I hope she recovers quickly and is able to visit you for Christmas. And it is a relief your computer is virus free.

  3. I'm hoping that your daughter's vaccination is helping to moderate the virus and that she will soon be feeling a lot better.
I have sometimes had alarming pop ups, and a legitimate warning to go back from the previous page which was safe. I usually shut down the browser altogether and then get rid of all the history including cookies. It is a constant case of being vigilant. The other day I clicked on an article on Facebook and was immediately at risk, apparently, so I got out of that fast! Well at least your daughter was able to help you deal with your problem and verify that you are safe. Her expertise is very valuable for you.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. I'm hoping that my daughter will recover soon. It's a bit of a worry because she does have asthma.
I have to be very careful on what I click on when reading stuff online! But, yes, my daughter was able to help me with the computer issues, which was a big relief, as I didn't have to go to the computer store and be without a computer.

  4. I am relieved your daughter only seems to have a moderate case of Covid. It sounds like she will be feeling better soon and not suffer from any lasting symptoms. It must still be a worry, however. X

    1. Thank you, Jules. So far, her symptoms have been fairly moderate. I'm hoping that they don't get worse (she does have asthma). We do worry about their wellbeing, don't we?

    1. I don't know why it happened, either, Celie. I did wonder who it was! :)

  6. Good news on both viruses. I'm so glad to hear your daughter's temperature has been normal twice now and hope for continued mild symptoms for her and a full recovery.
Oh gosh - computer issues can be so aggravating and scary with what you had going on. I'm glad your daughter was able to help you.
    She's a handy girl isn't she? :)
That soup looks nice and warm and nourishing. I'm glad she had the things in her pantry to make it and hope her food supplies are sufficient for her quarantine.

    1. Thank you, Debra; yes, good news on both viruses! My daughter's temperature has been fluctuating - she had a fever last night and, again, this morning. All part of her body trying to fight off the virus, but, we don't want it to go up too high, either. She has been taking OTC meds to keep the fever in check.
My daughter is my tech support! LOL. She claims she looks up this stuff, herself, but, I lack the confidence to do it, myself. Computers intimidate me!
She said she made at least 4 servings of the soup. Yes, she has plenty of supplies in her pantry, although she had been planning to go grocery shopping with weekend, so was a bit short on fresh produce and her half & half. But, she opened a container of powdered coffee creamer this morning and she opened a can of mixed fruit (and a can of ham and beans soup, too, for a change from her homemade soup) last night. Also, at least 3 of her friends have offered to either bring food or have food delivered to her (although she has declined their offers).

  7. I get warning popups all the time about viruses and it's just an ad trying to get me to buy antivirus software. They are annoying, but I just close them. I guess I could turn off popups. Glad you got things sorted out.

    1. Yes, that's what these pop ups were, too. But, I was receiving them at a rate of about one every few seconds and it was hard to ignore them! I might allow pop ups, later. :)

  8. That's better news today. You must both be relieved that your daughter seems to have a mild/moderate case of Covid and I wish a speedy recovery for her with no lingering issues. Also good news about the lack of virus ... those pop-ups are worrying aren't they?

    1. Yes! :) We are very happy that my daughter's symptoms seem to be still at the moderate level. She does have a phone consultation with a doctor, tomorrow morning, because she has asthma and they want to check on her.
I'm very relieved that the computer is back to normal! Those pop-ups are designed to make one feel insecure and vulnerable!
