Friday

Friday's Harvest: Oranges, Passionfruit, &
Broccoli Side Shoots

Today, I picked some oranges and broccoli side shoots from the garden.  There were two small fruits that were ripe on the passionfruit vine (they had already formed when the vine was bought), too, and I picked them so my daughter can enjoy them before she leaves.

Passionfruit

There was about a teaspoonful of pulp in each half.  Maybe, next year, we will get a few bigger fruits with more pulp in them to enjoy.

Today, I washed all the new-to-us clothes that cousin R had given us, as well as the regular laundry.  Then, I tried on some of the new clothes and picked out 12 new tops to add to my wardrobe!  Do I need 12 new tops?  No, of course, I don't!  It wasn't that long ago that I decluttered my closet, because I felt I had too many items of clothing!  At the same time, it is hard to decline free clothing!  I will be going through my closet, again, however, to see if I can release a few more items, perhaps things I've had for several years.

Daughter has already picked a few of the new clothes to take up with her. The rest will be kept in her closet, to be worn on future visits home and/or to take up with her on future visits.

Today, we had more leftover Thai food for brunch.  I cooked some salmon for dinner, sauteed with onions and tomatoes, and cooked rice and the broccoli side shoots that I picked today for the sides.

The Roofed Patio

This is the patio with the roof panels that flapped in the wind, the other night.  You can almost see one of the two edging stones that my daughter set on top of the panels on the near edge.  M was unable to buy the nails before he came to tend to the garden, today.  But, he hopes to be able to buy them over the weekend.  Today, he fertilized some of the fruit trees and watered the garden for me.  He also brought some chocolate bunnies for us and a package of ghost pepper roasted cashews for my daughter!  A word of warning - ghost pepper cashews are very hot!

Chocolate Bunnies

Today, I am grateful for:
- New to us clothes
- Working appliances (washer and dryer)
- Electricity to run them
- Garden produce
- M tending to the garden for me

Today's joyful activity was trying on and picking new to me clothes.

Plans for tomorrow include enjoying daughter's last day at home!

How was your day?  What are your plans for Saturday?

  1. You've done well acquiring twelve new tops and new clothes for your daughter. Now I understand about your patio roof and I hope M can find the nails to secure it for you. Enjoy your chocolate bunnies. I like cashews but never heard of ghost pepper cashews, perhaps just as well if they are very hot :)

    1. My cousin blessed us abundantly with the clothing! I won't need to buy any more clothes for the rest of this year, I think! Daughter and I each had a chocolate bunny after dinner and they were delicious! Yes, the ghost pepper cashews are very hot! I ate just a few small pieces - I like spicy, but, I didn't want to get heart burn from eating stuff that is too spicy! :)

  2. The roofed patio looks like a lovely area to sit, or don't you use it for that? Have a lovely day with your daughter before she has to leave ... are you planning her next visit yet?

That's certainly a generous gift of clothing from your cousin ... is your wardrobe looking full again? 😂

    1. I used to have a patio table and chairs set up at the far end (the near end has steps leading down from the sliding glass doors). I should buy a new patio table and set it up, again. This area might be my next outdoor project!

Yes, the closet is looking a bit full, after the new items were hung up, but, I will go through things, again, soon. There might be a few items I can declutter. :)

  3. Can you use the one in, one out rule with your new tops? It's fun to get new things-especially if they're free. I'm sure you will enjoy them.

I was trying to remember if I've ever had passion fruit before? I don't think so.

    1. That's what I'm thinking, June, doing the one in, one out method. But, I'm going to wait until after my daughter leaves to go through the closet. For now, I hung all the new items with the hangers facing backwards.

Passionfruit has a distinct flavor - a little sweet, a little tart. If I can't get fresh passionfruit, I like Welch's passionfruit flavored juice blend as a drink. :)

    1. Thank you, Diana; I really don't make as much use of that patio area as I could! The clothes are a wonderful gift! It means I won't have to buy any clothes for at least the rest of this year!

  5. It's very nice of your cousin to give you so many clothes! I do see now how the wind could damage your patio covering. You are fortunate to have M to fix it! I don't think I have ever eaten passion fruit. I've seen pictures, and like yours, it doesn't look very appealing to me! But I shouldn't just by looks. Maybe I would love it! Enjoy your day with your daughter. Celie

    1. It really was very generous of my cousin to do so! She did ask me if I would like to receive them and said that I was free to give away or donate what I didn't like. I am very happy to receive the clothes because, 1) I dislike clothes shopping, and 2) it saves me money!

Yes, it's a blessing that M was able to fix the patio roof panels for me! Once upon a time, I would have been up there on a ladder, fixing the roof, but, these days, I don't trust myself up on a ladder! :D

If you want to get a taste of passionfruit, without having to deal with the fruit, Welch's passionfruit flavored juice blend/cocktail is my favorite. :)

Thank you, Celie; this last day with my daughter seems to be going by too quickly! :D

  6. Isn't it amazing how hard it is sometimes to buy the most basic things like certain nails or sewing notions? I hope M manages to find suitable nails soon.
Those bunnies are cute. I know a son who would probably be happy with those super hot cashews! (picky eaters grow up to surprise us!). You will have quite a choice of tops to wear now with the new additions.
I went to the grocery stores again today and it is an odd feeling when some areas are totally empty, but it is a holiday weekend. I got most of what I needed. The sun is out but it is still cold. Must remind myself of this in July if we get unbearable heat!

    1. Yes, it is hard to get the basics when one is unable or unwilling to go shopping in person! M will buy the nails when he has a bit of time to shop for them; I am much obliged to him for being willing to do so.
If your son likes really spicy hot then, ghost pepper is his friend! :D
Yes, I've a good choice of tops to wear! They can all be worn with a black skirt or pair of pants.
I hope those empty grocery shelves will be filled after the holiday weekend! The grocery stores here reached an agreement with their workers who were threatening to strike, so the strike has been averted! I'm glad about that!
We are a bit on the cool side, here, ourselves. Today's high was only 65F.

  7. Those bunnies look so cute - are they Lindt?

I know it is a lot of tops, but really it is a lot of options and a gazillion ways of dressing up different skirts or trousers.

I don't think that I've ever seen fresh passion fruit before. Thank you for sharing.

    1. Yes, they are Lindt bunnies! They taste delicious!
Oh, I am not complaining, Lyssa, I am very grateful to have received the clothes. It's just that, last year, I was on a closet decluttering mission because I felt I had too many clothes! After all, just how many clothes does a retired woman, who doesn't go out and about much, need? But, it's nice to have some new clothes, too. Personally, I think my cousins give me clothes because they are tired of seeing me wearing the same 3 or 4 outfits every time! :D

Passionfruit is one of my favorite fruits. The leaves are edible, too - we shred and cook them to have with rice. :)

  8. I don't think I have ever eaten fresh passion fruit. It is not a staple grown locally.
You will enjoy the new duds!

    1. I think you'll like passionfruit. They are not readily available at the grocery store, but, sometimes, farmers' markets will have them.

Yes, I know I'll enjoy my new clothes; the price was just right! :D

  9. Those little chocolate rabbits are so cute. How thoughtful of M.
Did he give you them last year, too? Maybe it was another blog I saw them on.
Lindt chocolate is very good, isn't it?
Thank you for giving us a picture of the area with the panels. It's very clear now what is going on. Hopefully M will be able to get the nails and secure them for you.
That's a nice outdoor spot you have.

I am trying to donate some things to Habitat for Humanity. An old wooden fireplace front, a kitchen island, tools, rolling wooden library ladders - Big things!
It's been a process moving everything to the garage (they don't come into your home and will pick up only from a garage or outside)
You need to send pictures prior to them agreeing it is something they could use, so in addition to moving things to the garage, I've had to make room for picture taking of the items to be donated so that require shifting things around.
The place is a mess! And that bugs the crap out of me, Bless. lol. Even though my garage has too much stuff in it, it WAS orderly. Now it's not :(
I know it's only temporary. They will let me know Tuesday if there will be room on the truck that will be in our area on Friday.

    1. The chocolate bunnies are cute and they were delicious! My daughter loves Lindt chocolate. Last year, M gave us two bigger chocolate bunnies, but, the year before, he gave us a set of 5 Lindt chocolate sheep! They were very cute, too!

Yes, I need to spruce up my patio area and use it more than I do now. I used to have a patio table, but, it broke and I haven't replaced it. M keeps telling me I need to get another patio table! :D

That's great that you have several items to go to Habitat for Humanity if they will accept the items and collect them! But, my goodness, what a lot of work is involved, moving things and taking pictures, etc.! I'm sorry it has left your garage in a mess and I can imagine just how bothered you are by that! But, hopefully, they will pick up all your items and then, you can tidy your garage, again. :)

  11. Passion fruit is a favourite of mine, love it in yogurt or on top of icecream or with coconut rice. Ive grown it from time to time but I find that the vines are not long lived and I forget to plant another one. That patio looks as if it would b e a nice cool spot in the summer.

    1. I love passionfruit. I am trying to grow a vine for the first time; It's good to know that they are not long lived - I'll have to keep that in mind! I read that cuttings can be rooted, but, so far, I've not had much luck getting them to root!
I need to spruce up the patio - I haven't been making as much use of it as I could!

  12. There was also a delivery of Lindt bunnies here, yesterday! A big, white one and a little brown one!
Forgot to say on yesterday's post that I hope the new year brings good things to Sri Lanka. I've been reading about the news there and thinking of you and your family. Scary times.

Yes, the news from SL is very sad. Yesterday, I read an article about the doctors there begging for medical supplies. I don't know enough about the politics there, but, apparently, there has been much mismanagement of resources!
