Windy Monday

Avocado Sapling Blown Down!

Monday was a windy day!  It wasn't too bad in the morning - a bit breezy, partly cloudy, but quite sunny, too.  I watered the front garden and most of the back garden, too, and picked about 6 okra that were ready.

In the afternoon, it became very cloudy and looked like it might rain, but it didn't.  Then, in the early evening, it became very windy!  The avocado sapling practically toppled over!  The short broom handle that was tied to it wasn't enough of a stake!  I tried to prop it up with some large stones, but, I think we need to get some stronger stakes to hold it up!

The wind also caused some of the fiberglass roof panels that I have on the back "porch" to work themselves free from the wood they were nailed to!  They were flapping so hard that I was afraid they'd go flying off!  But, daughter climbed up a ladder while I held the ladder to steady it and nailed the roofing panels as best she could.  Apparently, the wood they are nailed to have decayed.  I will need to find someone to fix that for me!

It blew hard for about three hours in the evening and then, the wind died down for some time.  But, it seems to have picked up, again, for I can hear it gusting!

Today, in addition to watering the garden, I dusted the living room and dining area, did the dishes, took the trash cans to the curb, cooked chicken and a fresh pot of rice for dinner (there was about a quarter of a jar of hot salsa left in the fridge and I added that to the chicken, in addition to some onions and broccoli - it turned out really well), chatted on the phone with my half-sister, neighbor T, and friend R, and cleaned the litter box, of course.  But, I also spent a couple of hours or so piecing together the fabric scraps that were "crumbs".

I had a lot of fun sewing the scraps, but, I think I sat at the sewing machine for too long!  When I finished sewing, my back was hurting!  I am now relaxing with the heated rice pack and will head off to bed as soon as I post this!

Today, I am grateful for:

- Daughter was able to nail down the loose roof panels
- The avocado sapling didn't break
- Water - for the garden, for washing and cooking, etc.
- Electricity - the lights flickered once or twice, this evening, but, we still have power
- Being able to chat on the phone with family and friends

Today's joyful activity was sewing my patchwork pieces.

How was your Monday?  What are your plans for Tuesday?

  2. I am glad that the avocado didn’t snap off. It looks very healthy and leafy, so it may be top heavy. You (and M) certainly have green thumbs.

    1. Thank you, June; I checked on it this morning and it is still bent over, but, otherwise OK. It is one that I grew from a seed, in 2017; it really grew this summer!

  3. That must have been quite a strong wind to start lifting the plexiglas. I hope you can get someone to do a permanent fix of the old wood. Good that the electricity still hung on.
Tuesday has turned into a puttering day after a busy but relaxing time away. I filled the peanut feeder for the woodpeckers, put the scarecrow doll on the front door, moved my gift of chrysanthemums to the table on the deck, reorganized something in the basement, took a quick trip into town with DH and picked up some groceries and sympathy cards, and I can still think of more to putter at! Mind you, it is a wonder I get anything done as there are two squirrels and at least four blue jays demanding peanuts to make up for us being away. They give us pleasure with their antics.

    1. It was quite a gale, Bushlady. I was worried about the eucalyptus tree (M hasn't been able to schedule the appointment with the tree trimmers, yet), but, fortunately, no branches fell down.

Sounds like you're having quite a busy day, puttering! Too funny about the squirrels and birds demanding you make up to them for being away! :D I put out some bird seed, today, to satisfy a mockingbird who was hopping about on the back steps, pecking at the crumbs of the kibble I put out for the cats!

    1. Thank you, Jules; it is doing well! We propped it up, today, and tied it to a taller stake! :)

  5. That's a pretty big sapling! I think it's going to graduate to the tree category soon.
You had a busy Monday and got a lot accomplished.

    1. Yes, I think, if it survives this winter, I will start calling it a tree! :D
