Warm on Thursday

Walter Melon III, aka "Dandy Macaroni"

Walter Melon III was cut off the vine, yesterday, as his vine had completely withered!  He had lost his feather, too!  We didn't cut him up, yet, because there was still a small section of Wawa left in the fridge.  But, we will cut him up this weekend!  

It was another warm day, today, with an outdoor high of 78F and an indoor high of 68F, even with all the doors and windows open to bring the warm air inside!  Once again, I sat outside, in the sunshine, to warm up!  As I mentioned to one of my friends, I feel cold even when it is warm for others.  Cousin P called me over because she had another bag of clothes to give to my daughter and I walked across the street to her house.  She was dressed in a short-sleeved t-shirt and 3/4 length cotton pants and slippers; I was bundled up in a wool sweater over my short-sleeved blouse, a scarf around my neck, long pants, and shoes and socks!  Later, when I was seated outside in the afternoon sun, still in my sweater and scarf, etc., my daughter joined me wearing a short sleeved blouse.  She went indoors after a few minutes because it was too hot for her and she was sweating, while I just felt comfortable, neither hot nor cold!  This weekend, however, we are supposed to be in the mid to upper 80s and I am looking forward to that!  

I had a fairly relaxed day, today, partly because I had a slight pain in my lower back!  After I spent the morning out in the garden, I came inside and did what seemed like a mountain of dishes that had piled up in the sink!  Then,  I cooked the chicken breast half that I had kept to thaw yesterday for last night's dinner - it hadn't thawed by dinner time, yesterday, so I cooked it this afternoon, instead.  I made a sort of dry rub for it with yellow curry powder, some chili powder, crushed curry leaves, and salt, then, pan roasted it with onions and garlic.  It turned out really well.  I made fried rice with leftover rice, an egg, some of the chicken I had cooked, and a handful of roasted peanuts and daughter and I had that for our lunch.  We had the last piece of "wawa melon" for dessert.  After lunch, I washed the lunch dishes!

For dinner, I cooked biriyani rice, using a premixed paste from a jar.  It wasn't as good as when made from scratch, but, it was not a bad substitute.  I made sauteed green beans to go with the rice and we had some of the chicken I made earlier in the day, as well.  The dinner dishes were done after daughter put away the leftovers, but, I left the pans to soak overnight.  Peaches for dessert.

Today, I am grateful for:

- A sunny, warm day
- Cousin giving more clothes to my daughter
- Phone conversations with aunt and friends
- A garden in which to sit and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine
- Regular mail delivery

Today's joyful activity was sitting in the garden, enjoying the sunshine, and observing the garden visitors (birds, butterflies, grasshoppers, the garden cats, and Bun Bun who feasted on the dandelions!)

Plans for tomorrow include an appointment for my quarterly check up with the oncologist.  Since this is a routine visit, I will probably be seen by the nurse practitioner; hopefully, there won't be a long wait to be seen!

  1. It is surprising what feels cool to one & warm to another. We find in summer 15(c) chilly but give us 15(c) in January & we break out the shorts & t-shirts! (lol). Fingers crossed for a quick visit with the doctor/nurse practitioner. Let's hope Dandy Macaroni will be a sweet treat on a warm weekend day.

    1. Yes, I know, it's all relative, isn't it? The doctor's visit went well. My blood test results were good, she said. I am looking forward to a slice of Dandy! :)

  2. I go outside sometimes to warm up also when I don't want to turn on the heat. We have our furnace cleaned today and hopefully we will have better news than you did. We should because its only a year old.

  3. Hi Bless, Your second watermelon is beautiful. I know what you mean about being cold. Right now I am wearing a flannel nightgown, leggings, a hand knit wool sweater, socks and slippers. I think as we get older our body temperature drops. It's wise to stay comfortable.

  4. I hope your appointment goes well and that you do have a pleasant warm weekend to enjoy some of Walter Melon. I hope he will be sweet.
    My friend and I met for coffee today and then I went for groceries and also picked up some moisturizing lotion for dry skin, from the Dollar Store. My friend had bought some there, so I knew it was good.

      Sounds like you had a good day, today. The dollar stores often have some good stuff and deals. I miss going to my local dollar store!

  5. Your chicken sounds very good with your spice rub.
    What do you mean by pan roast? I've heard the term but am not quite sure what it is.
    Do you sautee the chicken on top of the stove then finish it off by roasting it in the oven?

    1. Actually, your definition of pan roasting is correct - start cooking on the top of the stove (on direct heat) to sear the outside of the meat, then, put the whole pan in the oven (indirect heat) to finish cooking by roasting.

      But, that is not what I meant when I said I pan roasted the chicken! I used the term "pan roasting" in the colloquial way my mother and maternal grandmother used it, to mean "dry cooking, usually in a covered clay pot, without added liquid, on the stove top"! LOL! They didn't have Western style household ovens in their homes, back then (although, later, my mother bought herself an electric oven).

      What I do is, I sautee the chicken on high heat, on top of the stove with onions and, sometimes, tomatoes, then, cover the pan with a lid and let it continue to cook on top of the stove, with the heat turned down to about low medium. Usually, there is enough liquid from the meat and onions, etc., to generate enough steam for it to cook through. Towards the end of the cooking, I cut into the chicken breast to check if it was done (it was a fairly thick piece with the bone attached), and, because there was still some pink, inside, I sort of butterflied it, and let it cook a little longer.
