Breached!

This is the gate with the bunny blocking boards set in place by M on Friday (gate not locked in this picture):

The Gate Barrier Boards

All Openings Blocked

This is the metal fence blocking the entrance to the side yard (where I fell, by the way):

Side Yard Fence

It is barricaded with a fine wire mesh and more cardboard to cover the gaps where the mesh doesn't go all the way to the end.

And this is the Bun Bun who breached those barriers on Saturday:

Enjoying a Snack Under the Calamondin Tree

"Oh, Hi There, Lady!"

"Yum!"

"What's that?  Leave the Garden?
Oh, you are so funny, Lady"

He spent all evening in the garden.  Stripey cat would occasionally chase him, but, he was trying to play!  Bun Bun enjoyed some sweet potato leaves, as much of a newly planted Japanese purple mustard leaf as he could reach from between the wire mesh, some chrysanthemum buds, and grass; for dessert, he ate some of the cats' kibbles while I watched from the sliding glass door.  He left some fresh droppings as a thank you, I suppose.  I didn't see him leaving, but, he didn't show up, today (at least, I didn't see him!)

Maybe I should call him Super BunBun, because, surely he has some super powers to get through those barriers!

Today was a cloudy day, with some occasional sunshine.  The afternoon warmed up to around 73F, which was nice.  I slept in, this morning, then, said my morning prayers, chatted with Aunt C who called to tell me about the forecasted rain storm for tomorrow and with neighbor T who called for our usual Sunday chat.

In the afternoon, I put gas to the car.  Gas at the cheapest station near my house was $4.26/gal.  Since I already had half a tank of gas, it cost me $36.89 to fill it.  The last time I put gas was on August 23, and I paid $4.15/gal.  I put $40 worth of gas, that time.  I didn't need to put any gas in September (one good thing about staying home during the pandemic is I don't use as much gas as I used to!)  I budget $50 per month for gas and any unspent gas money goes towards defraying other costs, such as higher than normal water bills, etc.

Later, I chatted with friend R, ran the dishwasher, cleaned the kitchen a bit, and read a little.

Today, I am grateful for:

- Phone calls from family and friends
- The availability of gas
- Warm afternoons
- Electricity, hot water on tap
- Working appliances

Today's joyful activity was reading.

Today's decluttering was 5 items of clothing (I haven't been posting my daily decluttering log as it is getting long, but, I am decluttering at least one item a day).

The big plan for tomorrow is the eye doctor's appointment.  We are supposed to get a major rain storm tomorrow and I am not looking forward to driving to the appointment and back in the rain!  It is the first major rain storm of the season and driving in southern California when it rains is not fun!

How was your day?  What are your plans for Monday?

  1. Our fuel costs more than $6 a gallon. The taxes are much higher. Since retirement, I'm using my bicycle and my Seniors Free Bus Pass when I can. And I'm cutting out unnecessary journeys. Better for my bank balance, and better for the planet.

    1. That's a lot for a gallon of gas! Of course, the UK gallon is a little more in quantity than the US gallon - perhaps that's part of the reason for the price difference? A UK gallon is 160 fluid ounces or 4.546 liters; the US gallon is 128 fluid ounces or 3.785 liters. :)
Well done on reducing your gas consumption and carbon footprint! I, too, drive much less than I used to when I was working. :)

  2. That bunny is very determined to eat in your garden. That cardboard will get soaked when you have rain so you may have to find a more permanent solution to keep him out...but I would keep him in but I know that's easy for me to say.... (sorry). I'm expecting my friend to call on her way home today so I'm looking forward to seeing her again.

    1. He is, isn't he? He was here for breakfast, this morning, waiting for kibble by the back door with the garden cats! I think, at this point, I might as well just remove the barriers and accept the fact that I've acquired a rabbit! Just make sure to plant my winter vegetables behind wire mesh!
I hope you have a lovely visit with your friend!

  4. That's quite funny. Super Bun Bun!

It's raining here. Rained all day yesterday and looks like more of the same today.

Gas here isn't quite that expensive but it is going up. Luckily I don't use much of it and if we take a day out it's a treat so we factor that into the cost of the day - usually we take a walk somewhere so that costs nothing lol

    1. Super Bun Bun was waiting, along with the garden cats, for breakfast this morning! I just had to laugh!

It has been raining more or less steadily since early morning! Not a very heavy rain, I'm thankful to say; nothing like what they received in northern California. But, the garden has received a good soaking and I am very glad for that!

Gas prices were higher about 2011, nearly $5/gal., when I was driving about 100 miles a day! I used to put $50 worth of gas every week! Walking is good! Good for the environment, good for the wallet, and good for you, too!

  5. Poor bunny or little rascal, I cannot decide. ;-)

I need to get back to my decluttering as well. I have a half-empty box to go the charity, that I just need to take a few minutes and it could be full and on its way, instead of cluttering up the floor in the master bedroom.

    1. He is a bit of a rascal, but, I feel sorry for him, too. Most of the other houses in my block have dogs, so, he obviously prefers my garden as there aren't any dogs. The cats mostly tolerate him, except for Stripey who tries to chase him to play.

Maybe set yourself a goal of filling that box by the end of this week?

  6. Gas prices are soaring every where ... thankfully we are working from home & can cut out a lot of driving. Oh BunBun is a master at getting to be where he wants to be. Rabbits are actually pretty good at climbing ...

    1. Yes, I'm driving much less these days, myself. I was just reading about rabbits climbing trees to get to the fresh, tender leaves! I hope Bun Bun won't plan on climbing my fruit trees, next summer! :o

  7. Round two of the battle - I feel Bun Bun won that round though. What do you plan to do next?

I've saved quite a bit of money through not using fuel during the pandemic which has really helped with budgeting as prices have risen so much. I did look online after reading Angela's comment above and was quite shocked to discover that petrol prices are on average 43% lower in the US than they are in the UK. I knew our fuel was more expensive but was shocked that it's that much more expensive over here.

I hope your eye appointment goes well tomorrow and that the rain holds off until you're back home.

    1. Oh, Bun Bun has definitely won! He was here, at the sliding glass door, waiting with the garden cats, for breakfast, this morning! I think the next step will be me waving a white flag and getting a roll of wire mesh for the winter vegetable beds!

Even allowing for your larger gallon, I think you do pay more for gas than we do and California has higher gas prices than many other states (we have a lot of taxes applied to our gas).

My eye appointment went well. It has been raining steadily since early morning, but, a slow rain, not the kind of heavy downpour experienced in northern California. I am very thankful for that - the drive wasn't as crazy as it could have been and the garden is getting a good soaking!

  8. Oh no! I wonder how he did it! Maybe you will find a burrow sometime ... just don't twist your ankle in the process!

    1. My daughter thinks that rabbits are like cats - if their heads can get through an opening, then, the rest of their bodies can get through, too. Bun Bun looks like a nice, plump bunny, but, his head is not all that big. In any case, it looks like I might have acquired myself a garden rabbit! He was sitting by the sliding glass door at the back, with the garden cats, waiting for breakfast, this morning! Cat food is not the best thing for rabbits, but, he gets plenty of fresh produce from the garden, so, I probably won't get rabbit pellets for him! I'll be on the look out for burrows! :o

  9. Nice try, says Bun Bun! I wonder if he tunnels? Or maybe he "teleports" to the garden.
I decluttered a lot of hair accessories since I don't intend to go back to long hair. I passed them on to DDIL for her and DGD to use, along with the attractive cardboard box that I had stored them in. That box has been around for longer than I can remember. It came to me with scented items and I always liked it, but it was time for it to go.

    1. I don't think he tunnels to get to the back yard - the whole driveway leading to the gate is cemented. I think even with the barricades, he is still able to wriggle under the gate!

The box with the hair accessories will be something DDIL and DGD will enjoy using, I'm sure. Maybe DGD will find a use for the box - to store some of her own personal mementos, perhaps. :)

  11. Well not only does Bun Bun have a strong good appetite, he has a very determined nature that is for sure. I didn't realize you had those nice metal gates to your yard and with M's blocking attentions it did seem like Bun Bun would be kept out.
What can you do? Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose lol

I saw on the news your area was due to get bad weather. I will read on and see how you made out going to your appointment. I hope the trip was uneventful.

    1. He is definitely determined! The cardboard is still in place and he's in and out as if they don't exist!

We got through the storm without much damage; I heard it was headed north east and hope you weren't impacted too much.

  12. We did get a really bad storm Tuesday night into Wednesday. The fences in my back yard (north side) got pretty damaged and we have a lot of big limbs down.
But the limbs didn't hit the house and we never lost power for which I'm very thankful.

    1. I'm sorry to hear that you had some damage to the garden. Hope the fences can be repaired and the limbs can be removed; such a blessing the limbs didn't fall on the house and you retained power! I'm having my eucalyptus tree in the front trimmed and some height taken off, in November. The tree leans away from the house, but, still, I worry about branches falling down on neighbors' cars parked along the curb, etc.
