A Day to Remember

Today (September 11), we commemorated the 20th anniversary of 9/11 and all the innocent lives that were lost that day.  I watched some of the news coverage on TV and felt very sad.  One of my cousins worked in the first tower; he managed to make it out alive.  A journalist took a photo of him and he sent me a copy of that article, later.

It was another warm (95F) day, today.   I checked on the plants in the garden, watered the newly planted papaya seeds, and picked one okra that was ready!  I am keeping that in the fridge until I get at least a couple more okra pods to cook.  I've read that okra leaves can be eaten, too, either raw (the young, tender leaves) or cooked, but, I've never tried them.  Has anyone tried okra leaves?

Last night, I had put some dried pinto beans to soak and I boiled them, this morning, and sauteed some, with onion, curry leaves, green chilies, etc., to have for brunch.  I kept some of the beans in the boiling liquid to make soup, later.  95F weather is not exactly soup weather, I know, but, I don't mind having soup when it is warm.  Later, I cooked a chicken curry.  We had some for dinner, I kept some in the fridge for next week, and froze some, for later.

Today, I cleaned my bathroom, cleaned the kitchen counters, and did the dishes.  I also did some crewel embroidery; I am almost done with the fruits, but, need to find some brown yarn for the basket part.

Today, I am grateful for:

- Electricity and fans
- The crewel embroidery kit that I was given
- Having a freezer
- Chilled water to drink
- Phone calls with family and friends

Today's joyful activity was sewing.

Plans for tomorrow include watering the garden.

How was your Saturday?  What are your plans for Sunday?

  1. After lunch, off to London on the train to do Grandma Duty for a few days. Last time I went on a train was March 2019 - and I caught covid!

    1. Oh, I remember reading about your train journey and thinking to myself, "She's brave to go in the train with Covid going around!" I hope you have a safer trip, this time around! Will you have to quarantine when you get to London?

  2. I like soup all year round, also. We had chili just a couple of nights ago. :)

    1. Chili sounds good! I haven't had chili in a long time! Should add that to the non-existent meal plan, one of these days! :D

  3. I did not follow any of the broadcasts about 9/11. That day will always be embedded in my mind, especially those brave firemen going up in the tower. We need to embrace life every day and be thankful, so much can change when we least expect it.

I think any weather is soup weather! Of course there are cold soups, too, but I'd never turn down a hot one unless it was 120°F in the shade!

    1. Yes, things can change in the blink of an eye and tomorrow is not guaranteed, is it? We had hot soup quite regularly when I was growing up in a tropical country; if we had to wait for cool weather to have soup, we would have had to wait for a long time (or go up to the mountains, where it was cool). :)

  4. I'm so glad to read that your cousin managed to get out of the tower. Does the memory of that day still affect him?

My Sunday has been very quiet, at home catching up with laundry, and enjoying piano practice and a Harry Potter film. Hope you've both had a good day too x

    1. I'm sure he is still affected by the memory of that day. I haven't seen him in years, but, he used to call me almost weekly to check on me when I was undergoing chemo. I emailed him, yesterday. If he doesn't respond, I will call him, mid-week (he lives in Florida, now).

Sounds like you are having a restful day. I did a load of laundry, myself, earlier. Now it is 2:30 p.m. and 96F - I think I will sit under the fan and take it easy! :D

  5. The 9/11 coverage mades me sad each and every year, but also reminds me that it is possible for our country to unite.
I enjoy seeing your daily declutter list. I will post mine in total at the end fo the month.

    1. It's very sad that it took something so tragic to unite us and how that unity seems to have disintegrated twenty years later. I sincerely hope that it won't take another tragedy to reunite us.

I am looking forward to seeing your decluttering list at the end of the month. I am hoping to get a lot more items decluttered this week in time for the donations pick up scheduled for the 20th!

  6. I am so glad your cousin made it out of the tower safely on 9/11. How terrifying that must've been.
I watched some of the coverage as well. What a terrible thing that happened to those people, their families and all of us.

I need to go find the post where you showed the crewel work so I can see it.
I think I'm starting to remember it. lol

    1. Thank you, Debra; yes, it was a terrible thing to have happened, wasn't it? Let's hope that nothing like that happens again!

The crewel embroidery kit was something the ladies at the library knitting club gave me. :)

  7. I started watching the History Channel specials at 9 a.m. on Saturday and was engrossed until noon. Almost as engrossed as I was on that day in 2001. I did pull myself away to do other things, but found myself this afternoon finishing up the last couple I had recorded.

    1. It's hard to watch those programs and yet, hard not to, either, isn't it?
