The First Corn of the Season

The First Ear of Corn

This year's corn patch hasn't done that well.  Of the 50 kernels of corn that were in the seed packet (yes, I counted them all) and planted, only about a dozen germinated.  M bought a second packet and planted those, too, but, only a handful of those germinated and none of them have produced any ears of corn, yet.

However, there was one ear of corn that looked like it might be ready to be picked and we picked it on Friday.

A Perfect Ear of Corn

I boiled it and let daughter enjoy it as she wasn't home to try any of last year's fresh corn, only the ones that I froze.  I just tried a couple of kernels and they were quite sweet.  Dancer enjoyed his treat of  6 kernels of corn, counted out and given one by one to him.

And of course, I had some fun, too!  Meet Cornelia Cornhusk:

Cornelia Cornhusk

I am grateful for:
- The first ear of corn from the garden
- Daughter is home to enjoy this year's corn
- M tending to the garden
- Water for the garden
- Having fun making a cornhusk doll

Are you growing any corn in your garden, this year?

    1. Fresh corn is the best, isn't it? I think I planted this year's corn a little on the late side. There are a few more ears of corn waiting to be picked, but, not as many as last year.

  2. Yay for the harvest, no matter how small! I remember one year I planted cantaloupe and only one grew! Haha! But it was SO delicious and I was so excited about it. Cornelia is adorable! Very creative! Hope you, your daughter, and Dancer have a wonderful weekend!

    1. Thank you, Mandy. Yes, even a small harvest is exciting because it is what we grew ourselves, isn't it? Cornelia dried out overnight and looks a bit raggedy this morning, but, I rather like her. :)
Hope you and your husband and son have a lovely weekend.

  3. Fresh corn is so good! How nice that your daughter is there to enjoy it. My weed garden has a bumper crop this year, and I didn't even have to plant it! Cornelia is quite the corn doll!

    1. Fresh corn is the best, I think, and I'm so happy that my daughter is here to enjoy it. It's amazing how well our weed gardens grow, isn't it? I have taught myself a little bit about edible weeds (like dandelions, cattails, purslane, etc.) and have tried some. It might be a good idea to try to encourage the edible weeds to grow!

  4. I never knew cats liked corn. I feel now that ours were deprived! The corn dolly is fun.

    1. They are not supposed to eat a lot of corn, but, Dancer likes to eat a little corn and cornsilk, the occasional broccoli leaf and piece of lettuce, as well as wheat grass. I had a cat that always wanted to share a bit of my cup of tea and avocado pudding.

  5. That is quite a pretty ear of corn. I'm glad it was tasty and I hope you get some more.
    As I'm sure Dancer does.
You could definitely enter a corn husk art competition.

    1. Thank you, Debra. I am pleased with how even the rows of kernels look in this particular ear of corn.
Ha, ha; I enjoyed creating Cornelia. :)
