Monthly Photo Challenge: August - Living

The theme for August's monthly photo challenge hosted by Eileen at A Bracelet of Days was, "Living", which can include people, plants, and animals.

Here are my selections for August's challenge:

Plumeria: First Bloom

I've not had much luck growing plumeria in my garden and the previous plants had all died.  But, this little cutting that M gave me bloomed for the first time and we were both very pleased.

Bougainvillea

The neighbors' bougainvillea is spilling over the wall and I'm loving the pop of color.

Pomegranate

This year, the pomegranate tree flowered quite profusely, but, there are only three fruits developing.  But, at least they are growing.

Butternut Squash

The butternut squash vines are living, too, although this vine looks like it is in desperate need of some life-giving water.

Avocado Tree: Just Barely Hanging On

The poor, grown from seed avocado tree is struggling.  It got frost bitten in the winter and got scorched earlier this summer.  Even the new growth looks like a last hurrah, but, I'm hoping it might pull through.

Dancer

No photo challenge is quite complete without Dancer posing for a picture, is it?

Patches and Moo

Then, we have the garden cats - Patches (on top of the empty kitty litter box) and Moo.

Not to mention this character, who lost no opportunity to "smile for the camera".

"Hi there!"

I started out calling it Rocky, but, I think Rocky is actually Roxie for I saw two baby raccoons following her another night.

"Would you like a profile picture?"

"Here's looking at you!"

Meanwhile, poor Patches was cowering inside her box:

"Who are you and why are you eating my food?"

I didn't take any people pictures as I didn't feel comfortable doing so in the few public places I went to in August.

Thank you, Eileen, for hosting the monthly photo challenges.  I'm looking forward to September's theme.

  1. Great set of photos. The only thing missing is Chicken Little. Have you seen her recently?

    1. Thank you, June. Chicken Little has not been seen or heard in months. I think she has "flown the coop".

  2. You take some amazing pictures and I'm awestruck by the picture of the raccoon. Roxie seems so exotic to me, and so characterful! Poor Patches seeing her food disappearing, I hope that she was safe.

    1. Thank you, Lyssa. My daughter took some photos of the raccoon and her pictures turned out better than mine, but, I posted the pictures I took on this post. I give credit to my cell phone. :) Patches was safe; the raccoon ignored her completely.

  3. I think raccoons are cute critters to look at, but I do not want them around my house. Around here they (whoever they are) drop "biscuits" with rabies vaccine from low flying helicopters (possibly drones now though) for the critters subject to catching rabies to eat. It is aimed at coyotes, foxes, and raccoons, but will not harm any domestic dog or cat who might find one and chow down.

    1. Yes, they do carry rabies and several other diseases, too, I believe.

  4. Your photos are lovely. Considering the drought you have, your plants are doing well with the regular watering. Those are great animal pictures. The garden cats are almost as cute as Dancer (I don't want to put his nose out by saying they are just as cute!)

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. The garden does require regular watering. I'm looking forward to some rain, later this year, although we had a surprise 5 minutes of light rain on Tuesday morning!

  5. I always love to see Dancer, but it's so neat to see your other garden creatures! The raccoon seems very comfortable there! Haha!

  6. These are all great! The photos of the raccoon are excellent. I don't remember seeing these two garden cats before. Are they siblings? They look similar. And if course, the most beautiful life there is Dancer! He sure is a handsome cat.

    1. Thank you, Celie. I posted a picture or two of Patches when she first showed up, maybe a year and a half ago. Shortly thereafter, I realized that she was with kittens. Moo is one of her kittens.

  9. Your plumeria is really a pretty pink. And look at that beautiful bougainvillea! Such a nice thing to spread over to your side from the neighbors. (New neighbors? or party neighbors?)
Why don't I remember you now having 2 back garden cats? I don't think I know about Moo.
That racooness and her babies need to move on and leave poor Patches to his/her already claimed domaine.
I hope the home grown Avo pulls through.

    1. Thank you, Debra. I like the color of the plumeria. The bougainvillea was already there when neighbor T lived nextdoor; the new neighbors trimmed it back, but, they've allowed it to grow again and I love it coming over the wall.
You don't remember Moo because I didn't post about her. Patches had a litter of kittens shortly after she arrived. One of them got eaten by a possum and another one was chased away. I think the Mama Raccoon and her babies have moved on; I must get M to try and close off the entrance to the crawl space.

  10. Thanks for joining in Bless. I was expecting photos of Dancer, but the raccoons were a complete surprise! I think my favourite has to be the bougainvillea though ... it's such a beautiful colour. xx
