May Grocery Shopping - Part 3

Groceries: May 23, 2025

I ordered and picked up some groceries from the supermarket, today.  I mostly wanted to stock up on daughter's coffee that was on sale, again, for $7.99/12 oz. with a digital coupon.  I now have a good supply of coffee for her.  In addition to the coffee, I bought half a gallon of milk, a loaf of bread, and three bananas.

Here's the receipt:

My total came to $45.96

I had $46.19 left in my May grocery budget and I managed to stay under that!

My May grocery budget = $150.00

Spent to date = $56.66 + $47.15 + $45.96 = $149.77

Balance remaining = $0.23

Well, I've stayed under budget, so far!  Of course, there's another whole week left in the month, but, I don't anticipate needing any groceries between now and the end of the month.  But, if I do, it'll be close enough to June that I'll borrow from the June grocery budget.

I am grateful for:

- Being able to buy groceries, both in terms of having the money to buy groceries and items being available to be purchased
- Being able to order groceries online and pick them up at the parking lot
- Digital coupons and sales
- A safe drive to the store and back
- Being able to stock up when there's a good sale

How are you doing with your grocery spending this month?

  1. You got a good deal on the coffee. It's almost never on offer here. Xx

    1. Thank you, Jules. I was happy that the coffee was on sale for this price, again. Got to stock up when things are on sale (or on offer, as you say). :)

  2. Your daughter should be set for coffee for a while. When does she come visit again?

    1. Yes, she's set for coffee for a good long while. :) She's planning to visit again in the first week in June (for her friend's daughter's christening; daughter has been asked to be the baby's godmother). After that, she is planning to move down at the end of August/beginning of September.

  3. I'm having fun wondering if there was anything you could buy with .23c without breaking into the June budget. Not much is sold individually, so 2 or 3 grapes won't work. Perhaps a tiny chunk of fresh ginger? But then you would have to spend gas to get to buy anything!

    1. That is a good question! If I go to the Armenian store, I might be able to buy a small piece of ginger or a few green chilies. Maybe even an onion (if they are on sale for $0.25/lb.) or a small potato a tablespoon of dried beans from the bulk bin. :) But, I would spend more than $0.23 on gas to get there, unless I am already driving past the store on my way to another place.

  4. Nice to get that much off on the coffee. I too order my groceries and do curbside pick up. I find it to be very efficient. I started doing it during Covid and decided I would keep doing it. Sitting here on the computer and ordering just what you need seems to be a better method of not wasting food when you go up and down the isle and pick up stuff for the heck of it. Though I don't do a budget, and rarely have coupons. YOu mentioned online coupons, can you tell me more about that?

    1. Hi Sandy, I, too, started ordering online and doing curbside pick up during Covid and I have continued to do so. I do the online shopping at a Kroger affiliated store and they have a store loyalty card and every week, they offer digital coupons that can be downloaded to your account/loyalty card. The digital coupons are not manufacturers' coupons, but, are store coupons. The store sends me email notifications when new digital coupons are available and they are also available on the store website. You click on the coupon to "clip" it and the special prices apply. Currently, one can use each digital coupon for up to 5 times per single transaction. Maybe check with your store to see if they offer digital coupons, too.

  5. My maths is shaky, but you got around a third of your total off! These days, that's a cause for celebration and potentially a lap of victory around the kitchen! You're doing amazingly with your budget.

    1. Thank you, Lyssa. Yes, just over 30% off. More, if you add the pick up fees of $6.95 which I saved by ordering above the minimum amount. That's why I like to order when things are on sale; there are only a few things I'll pay full price for. And why I rarely make a meal plan and buy the things needed for the planned meals; I usually buy what is on offer and plan my week's meals around what I bought.

  6. The coffee was a good deal! This week I think I'm going to try to cook from the freezer. We have lots of bits of things that need to be used up.

    1. Thank you, Sharon. I couldn't pass up on the opportunity to stock up on the coffee. I hope you are able to cook from the freezer this week. I, too, made my meal plan based on what I have on hand. I am not planning to go shopping this week.

  8. 23 cents! Talk about cutting it close.
You were smart to stock up on daughter's coffee with her moving home soon.
I will read on and see if June's money supply needed to be activated ;)

    1. I did cut it close, didn't I? Only by removing a whole bunch of items from the cart before I submitted the order! LOL. Don't tell Dancer - his tuna got dumped from the cart! So far, with two more days left in the month, I haven't needed to raid June's budget!
