May Grocery Shopping - Part 2

May Groceries 5/13/25

On Tuesday, I went to the Armenian grocery store to do my grocery shopping.  My main reason for going there was to take advantage of their Tuesday only deal on pork chops for $1.99/lb.  But, I had also gone through their weekly ad and listed several other items to pick up as well.  The majority of those items cost less that the equivalent at the regular grocery store.  For comparison, where possible, I put the regular grocery store prices, per their website, in blue.  As you can see, only the green beans were the same price per pound (or unit).  My groceries would have cost a lot more if I had shopped at the supermarket, although I didn't calculate just how much more.

I bought:

Pork chops, 3 lb. @ $1.99/lb. ($4.49/lb.) = $6.09
Beef shoulder steak, 1+ lb. @ $4.99/lb. ($7.99/lb.)  = $5.86
Chicken drumsticks, 3 lb. @ $1.29/lb. ($1.99/lb.)= $3.93

Strawberries, 3x1 lb. @ $1.99/lb.($4.99/lb.) = $5.97
Grapes, 1.67 lb. @ $1.99/lb. ($3.79/lb.) = $3.32
Cherries, 2.03 lb. @ $1.99/lb. ($5.99/lb. in 2 lb. bag) = $4.04
3 Tangerines, 1.2 lb. @ $0.69/lb. ($1.99/lb.) = $0.83

4 Onions, 1.83 lb. @ 4lb/$0.99 ($1.29/lb.) = $0.45
1 Lettuce @ 2/$0.99 ($1.99)= $0.50
Green beans, 0.85lb. @$2.49/lb. ($2.49)= $2.12
1 Cucumber = $0.69 ($0.99)
1 Broccoli crown 0.42 lb. @$0.99/lb.($1.99/lb.) = $0.42

1 pkt. Pita bread (5 pita breads; 12 oz.) ($2.99/11 oz.) = $1.49
2 pkts. Toasted bread* @1.39 ($3.00) = $2.78
1 pkt. French rolls (4 rolls) = $2.99 ($4.99 for 6)

1 quart Half and half = $2.99 ($3.49)

2 cans Coconut water @ $1.29 ($1.39)+ $0.05 recycling fee per can = $2.68

Total = $47.15

Replenishing my emergency supplies; shelf stable bread substitute

Receipt (5/13/25)

My total came to $47.15

My May grocery budget = $150.00

Spent to date = $56.66 + $47.15 = $103.81

Balance left in the grocery budget = $46.19

I don't anticipate needing to do another big grocery shopping trip for the rest of the month.  The balance left should be more than enough for things like bread, milk, and some fresh vegetables, during the rest of this month.

How is your grocery shopping and spending coming along?

  1. You definitely got some good prices at the Armenian store. I assume it's not close is why you don't go there more often.

    1. Thank you, June. Actually, the Armenian store is not that far from me and I used to go there quite often, before Covid. I stopped going there during Covid because I preferred to order online and contactless pick up at the supermarket and I am only now becoming more comfortable with shopping in person. On the other hand, there are some deals at the supermarket (like the coffee I stocked up on, earlier) that the Armenian store doesn't offer. It all depends on that week's sales.

  2. Grocery shopping chaotic due to kitchen refurbishment. Many of my "pantry" baking items are packed and inaccessible. Plus lots of company expected over next three weeks, so extra BBQ food being bought for freezer. I hope the weather remains ☀️ 😎 sunny

    1. The kitchen remodel is a temporary situation and some chaos is to be expected. I think you are handling it all quite well. Good idea to stock up on BBQ food for when company comes. I hope you have sunny weather, right throughout.

  3. I like your way of comparing prices. I'm thinking I could do that with the two stores in town. One is considerably cheaper for identical items.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. It used to be that I'd make my grocery shopping list based on the best deals at 2 or 3 stores and shop accordingly. The stores weren't too far apart, so I could go from one store to the other fairly easily. All that stopped during Covid and then, I got used to the convenience of ordering online and picking up. That convenience comes with a price!

  4. You got some great deals! The price difference with the regular grocery is amazing. Groceries here are high and there are few deals. I don't separate out food from other goods in my budget. My total budget is $300 a month ( includes cat food/supplies). I'm going to overspend this month!

    1. Thank you, Celie. Yes, this particular store offers some great prices, especially on fresh produce. I think the stores are offering fewer deals these days, but, I try to get the best deals when I can. Doesn't always work - for example, if I had waited to get the strawberries until this week, they are $1.50/lb. And a chain of Hispanic grocery stores is offering red cherries for $1.50/lb.
Your $300 budget per month for everything sounds good, but, with the way prices are increasing, I won't be surprised if you go over that! Especially if you are like me and stock up on various items from time to time.

    1. Thank you, Stephenie. Aldi is a bit out of my way, but, I might give it a try one day.

  7. It's sensible to keep your emergency supplies topped up.
I no longer follow a strict budget, but I find the prices at my nearest supermarket are fairly reasonable. Xx

    1. Thank you, Jules. They don't always have the toast bread available, so, I buy it when I see it.
That's good that the prices at your nearest supermarket are fairly reasonable. It probably makes it easier to shop there, knowing the prices are reasonable.

  8. That is one heck of a haul! You must have saved over 50% which is amazing these days. You must have been an absolute ninja to find those deals, make the choices and load up. I'm slightly envious of the cherries. We only really get them in season and it's a bit early for them here.

    1. Thank you, Lyssa. Yes, it would have come to quite a bit more if I had shopped at the regular supermarket, but, then, again, I would not have bought all the items I did and in the same quantities if I had to pay the supermarket prices. I might have bought the chicken, for example, but, not the pork chops and the beef steak. I might have bought one container of strawberries and not three. The cherry season is just starting over here. We always look forward to them.

    1. Thank you, Sharon. Yes, very often, the prices at this ethnic store tend to be lower than the supermarket prices.

  11. You had a good shop with this trip to the store with some good prices.
The Armenian store seems to always be lower. Is that the case?
You stocked up well on meat and the prices on fruits and vegetables were very good.
    Good job!

    1. Thank you, Debra. The Armenian grocery store almost always has lower prices on fruits and vegetables than the supermarket. And they have items that the regular grocer stores don't have. But, you really have to price compare and check the deals. For example, this week (prices effective starting on Wednesday), the Kroger store has store brand butter for $3.50/lb. and butter at the Armenian store is $3.99/lb.
