California Poppy |
I am continuing with my new way of seeing how I thrived in my life for March, too.
Today (Saturday), I ordered and picked up groceries; the last grocery shopping trip for March.
I didn't take a picture of the items I bought, but, here's the receipt:
My total came to $33.80
I had $42.34 left in my March grocery budget and I made sure that I spent under that amount when ordering today's groceries because I didn't want to go over budget this month!
March Grocery budget = $200
Spent to date = $51.70 + $47.92 + $31.71 + $18.34 + $7.99 + $33.80 = $191.46
Balance left in the March Grocery Budget = $200 - $191.46 = $8.54
I don't see myself buying anymore groceries in the next couple of days, so that $8.54 will be carried over to April. I am feeling pleased with myself for staying under budget, this month.
I baked the pizza after I came home and we had that for a late lunch, followed by one of the mangos.
How are you coming along with your grocery spending this month? Were you able to stay within budget?

Grocery Receipt 3/19/25 I like how they separate items by category |
On March 19, I did a mid-week grocery shopping trip, in person, after getting my taxes done. There is a Hispanic supermarket located in the same outdoor mall as the tax accountant's office and I wanted to get some half and half for my daughter's coffee, another loaf of sandwich bread, and some produce. I knew that I had approximately $60 left in my grocery budget and I wanted to spend about $20.00 total on this mid-week shopping trip, since there were still another 12 days left in the month. I was determined to stay under budget this month!
I bought:
1 pint half and half = $2.69
1 loaf sandwich bread = $2.99
4 bolillo rolls @ $0.50@ = $2.00
1 piece cappuccino tres leches cake = $3.99
1 lb. strawberries = $3.99
0.49 lb. broccoli crown @ $0.99/lb. = $0.49
2 cucumbers @ 2/$1 = $1.00
1 bunch kale = $1.19
Total = $18.34
The bolillo rolls were delicious and daughter and I enjoyed them with chicken curry and/or sandwiched with part of a pork chop.
March Grocery budget = $200
Spent to date = $51.70 + $47.92 + $31.71 + $18.34 = $149.67
In addition, I bought a quart of ice cream on Saturday from an ice cream shop offering 31 flavors; we had gone in to get a treat, but, a single scoop was $3.49 at the shop and we decided we'd get more value for our money with the bigger container.
So, spent to date = $149.67 + $7.99 = $157.66
Balance left in the March Grocery Budget = $200 - $157.66 = $42.34
It is March 25 as I write this and there are six days left in the month. I know I will need to pick up more half and half, later this week, and some milk and fruit plus probably more bread (or bagels). I've already taken a look at this week's grocery ads (effective date 3/26) and will make a grocery list based on that, to be picked up this weekend, probably.
By the way, a dozen large eggs are priced at $6.99! Woo hoo!
How is your March grocery shopping coming along?

Swarming Bees |
This is the third time since I've been in this house that I've had a swarm of migrating bees form a cluster like this. The very first time, I was watering the tree on which they had swarmed and they left, immediately. The second time, we called the county vector control and they sent someone to collect the bees. But, this time, when I looked up the county vector control website, they say they do not remove bees. So, I looked up the county beekeepers association and there were several beekeepers listed. They will collect bees for a fee.
But, I know that swarming bees will move once they've found a suitable site for their permanent hive. So, I decided to give them some time to move on. They were still in place on Friday evening when M came to tend to the garden. I thought I'd give them a little more time. As I told one of my friends, if they were still here on Monday, then, I will contact a beekeeper.
But, when I checked on Saturday afternoon, the swarm had moved on. I checked the other trees in the garden, but, I didn't see another bee cluster. I hope they found a good place to build their hive. I am just hoping that it is not in my attic space! I don't have a finished attic as such, but, there is a space between the ceiling and the roof with ventilation openings! I didn't notice any bees flying in and out of any of the vents, though. But, if my ceiling starts to drip with honey, then, I will know where they went! And then, I'll really need to call a beekeeper!
In the meantime, I am grateful for:
- Bees, who pollinate our flowers and enable them to form fruits and seeds, who bless my garden with their presence, and who have, hopefully, moved on to a better place to build their hive!
Have you had a cluster of swarming bees in your garden?

Reinforced Mending |
I guess I am hard on my socks! I wear them around the house as I don't wear shoes inside the house. The repeated mending makes the socks feel rather stiff at first, but, eventually, I get used to it. However, every time I darn one area of the sock, I notice that the wool is getting thinner and worn out in other places.
So, I decided that it was time to knit myself a new pair of socks! I decided to use some acrylic yarn that was leftover from the pink crocheted blanket. It's the neon pink that my daughter thought was too bright, but, I love!

Both daughter and I were disappointed with our chicken sandwiches, but, we enjoyed the chicken wings and the pies. Most probably, we will not buy more sandwiches from that fast food place, again.
Dinner: Leftovers from lunch.
Sunday: (Picked up groceries)
Brunch: Frozen pasta meal - not bad for the $0.99 I paid for each, but, not worth the full price of $3.49; will not be buying again.
Dinner: Salmon cooked with onions and tomatoes, rice, leftover Brussels sprouts

New Fabric Haul |
Then, on Saturday afternoon, daughter and I decided to go to Joann's, the fabric/crafts store that is closing down, to see if there were any bargains to be found. Daughter wanted some beads at 30% off. I wanted to see if they had any sewing thread (only some specialized machine embroidery thread were available), packaged elastic (the shelves were bare), and fabric, even though I had bought a stash of fabric in December!
I usually stock up on fabric when it goes on sale for 50% off or more, especially when this store used to have their after Thanksgiving/after Christmas clearance sales. But, now, even with the store closing, most of the fabric were only 20% off. Which wasn't a big savings, in my opinion, and probably why they had so much fabric left on the shelves in the store. I stood in front of the holiday fabric shelves, filled with bolts of St. Patrick's Day/Easter/spring themed fabric, Halloween/fall themed fabric, and Christmas/winter themed fabric, as well as patriotic design fabric and checked the prices. But, the original prices were mostly $9.99 and up and the 20% off discount didn't bring the prices down enough for me to want to purchase them.
Instead, I headed over to their low priced fabric section, where the "project cotton" fabric was originally priced at $2.00 per yard (which is the fabric I stocked up on in December). They didn't have as big a selection of that fabric, and some of them were the same as what I had bought in December, but, they, too, were 20% off and I decided to get more of that fabric for future projects.
The picture above shows what I bought. I already had some of the apple print fabric, the solid green fabric, and the pale pink with stars fabric, but, I bought more of them for $1.60/yd. I bought 2 yards each of the red striped, apple print, green, and orange fabric and 3 yards of the pink. Most of the fabric on the bolts were pre-cut pieces of fabric (I suppose pieces that were returned by previous customers for whatever reason?) I had a very nice store clerk assisting me, though. Sometimes, the precut piece was just over 2 yards, and rather than cutting off the excess, he just gave me the whole piece and charged me only for the 2 yards.
I did want 10 yards of the purple fabric (my favorite color and good for quilt backings, borders, sashing, etc.) However, that entire bolt seemed to be made up of 2-3 yard pieces. I think the biggest piece was a little under 4 yards. I was fine with getting 10 yards of pieces at that price (I could always sew the pieces together if needed). The sales assistant measured out 10 yards of the purple altogether, but, because it was in pieces, he gave me a further discount and charged me for only 5 yards! As a result, I paid a total of $25.60 for a little over 21 yards of fabric. Now, that's a good way to build up my fabric stash, I think. I was very happy with my fabric purchase.
Speaking of my fabric stash, I had a piece of fabric (bought from this same store, but, several years ago) in the stash. I remember shopping for it because I went with my daughter and she selected several pieces of fabric with cherry blossom designs because she loves cherry blossoms.

A New Skirt for Daughter |
It's a very simple gathered skirt with an elastic waist band. But, daughter is very happy with her new skirt with the cherry blossom print. And I am happy that a piece of fabric I had in my stash was used up.
I am grateful for:
- Finding fabric on sale
- A really nice sales assistant who gave me additional discounts on the sale fabric!
- More fabric for my stash
- Being able to sew a skirt for my daughter with fabric I already had in my stash
- Daughter being so happy to have a new skirt sewn by me.
Playing with fabric is one of my favorite joyful activities.
I do admit to wandering around the yarn section, too, but, nothing was reduced to a price that I thought was a good deal, so I didn't buy any yarn.
Have you been to Joann's since they announced their store closings? Did you find good bargains? Do you have a fabric stash? Do you think I went a bit overboard with my adding to my stash?

Groceries - March 16, 2025 |
I ordered and picked up groceries on Sunday, March 16.
I bought bread, half and half, fruits and vegetables, salmon, canned tuna (not pictured; they are still $1 a can and I am stocking up while they are at this price) and two frozen dinners (also not pictured as I had already put them away in the freezer).
Here's the receipt:
My total (after discounts and coupons) came to: $31.71
March Grocery budget = $200
Spent to date = $51.70 + $47.92 + $31.71 = $131.33
Balance left in budget = $68.67
We tried the frozen dinners for a late lunch on Sunday. They were okay for the price I paid for them, but, I will not be buying them again.
The salmon was a splurge item. I cooked it for dinner and my daughter was very happy.
Eggs. by the way, are still $9.99/doz., even though I have seen articles saying that the wholesale price of eggs have decreased. That decrease is not yet to be seen at the grocery store, however.
I can see that it will be a bit of a challenge to stay under budget for the rest of this month. as I foresee at least two additional shopping trips. But, I think I am up to that challenge. What do you think?
How are you doing with your grocery shopping so far this month? I know some of you don't have a set budget, but, those of you who do have a budget, are you able to stay on budget?
