Friday Update

Hellebore Flowers

My hellebore plant is in full bloom!  I think I finally managed to capture the right color.

Thank you, everyone, for your concern about the missing modem.  My daughter called the phone company during her lunch break, today.  She was able to speak with a customer service rep who checked to see what happened to the modem that was supposed to have been shipped out on Monday.  Well, apparently, even though the information on the account states, "Order Completed", the modem was not shipped!  Because they didn't have the replacement modem in stock!  Only the TV box was shipped and we received that.  Of course, we hadn't been notified that the part was not in stock and there was no notation on the account that the modem was not included in the shipment.  However, the customer service rep asked daughter if he could put her on hold and then, checked with their warehouse or stock room staff and then, told my daughter that they now had the modem in stock and it will be shipped today (Friday) and we should receive it tomorrow (Saturday).  Glad to hear that!

In the morning, I picked up the groceries I had ordered; they were brought to the car by Eric.  Today, I bought:

1 lb. bacon, reg. price $8.99, on sale with coupon = $4.97

1 doz. large brown eggs (reg. $3.49), on sale with coupon = $1.79

2 quarts (32 fl. oz. each) half and half, $2.39@ = $4.78
(we decided to try buying two smaller containers to see if it will stay fresher, longer, this way)

8 oz. mild cheddar cheese (reg. $2.99) = $1.99

1 broccoli crown @ $1.98/lb. = $1.19
1 cucumber = $0.99
1 lb. bag garbanzo beans = $1.79

10 lb. bag potatoes = $3.99 (the 5 lb. bag was $2.99; I decided to pay $1 more and get the 10 lb. bag)

2.81 lb. bananas = $1.83 (except, I did not receive the bananas and I didn't realize that until just now!  I think what happened is, the store clerk had another customer's orders in the trolley, as well, and he probably got my bananas mixed up with her order; oh, well, I hope the other customer enjoyed her free bananas!)

3+ lb. apples @ $.99/lb. = $3.09
2 avocados @ $.99 = $1.98

Total = $28.39

Spent to date = $86.05 + $28.39 = $114.44

Balance left in the grocery budget: $113.73

Later in the afternoon, I went over to cousin V's house to drop off the gifts for her grandsons and to wish her husband for his birthday.  I was offered lunch, but, I declined!

After I came home, I did a little more work in the shed, taking out some of the smaller items and sweeping the floor.  There was evidence that either a cat or a possum (or both) had been in there, although I've kept the door closed.  Later, when M was here, I had him remove some of the larger items and I finished sweeping.  Tomorrow, I will hose down the floor and then, decide what to keep and what to toss.  I did toss a few things, today, too.

Today, I am grateful for:

- The situation with the modem has been clarified and we should receive it tomorrow (Saturday)
- Curbside grocery pick up (even if the bananas weren't included in the bags of groceries)
- A safe drive to cousin's house and back
- Being able to make progress on the shed clean up
- A sunny and warm day

Today's joyful activity was visiting cousin and family.

Plans for tomorrow include visiting friend A (hopefully) and cleaning the shed.

How was your Friday?  What are your plans for Saturday?

  1. That's a relief your modem will be delivered tomorrow but a shame about the lack of communication. It's still raining heavily here and thankfully the strong winds of Storm Eunice have passed. I'll take Tilly out when the rain eases off as we didn't leave the house at all yesterday.

    1. It would have been nice if we had been notified of the delay, wouldn't it? Anyway, it was delivered, today. I hope the rain eased off later in the day and you and Tilly were able to have a nice little walk.

  2. It sounds like you've had a productive day. Well done on the progress you've made clearing the garden shed. Will you use your grill now that you've rediscovered it?

I'm glad the issue with the modem has been resolved and fingers are crossed that the package arrives as promised this time. At least you know that it hasn't been delivered to someone else in error.

It's still very windy here, though nowhere near as bad as the storm, and it's still raining so the best place to be is indoors ... it's a time for relaxing and catching up with TV shows, plus some piano practice of course.

    1. It was a very productive day! I did more things yesterday than I sometimes do in a week, I think! :D The grill is one of those big kettle drum charcoal grills; better suited for when you have a crowd over rather than a meal for one or two people. I keep it more for an alternate way to cook if there is a major earthquake and we are left without gas or electricity. But, maybe I should set it up under the awning at the back and do some grilling, this summer! I'll have to give it a good scrub, first!
The modem was received today. My daughter still has to install it, but, I'll leave that up to her.
Glad you are able to stay indoors and be warm and dry! The garden will enjoy all that rain you are receiving. :)

  3. Your hellebore plant is a prolific bloomer compared to mine which right now is looking dead. But it will revive in another month or so.

    1. Thank you, June. No doubt, by the time your plant comes back to life, my plant will be starting to fade. We are expected to go down to 34F on Wednesday night; I hope the plants will not get too badly damaged!

    1. Thank you, Martha. The modem arrived, today. I hope the cold nights that are being forecasted for next week won't hurt the garden plants! I was able to wash the shed, today. Tomorrow, I will clean the shelf unit and wash and replace things. Hope you are having a lovely weekend.

  5. That is a wonderful photo of the Hellebore flowers. It would be a good one to enlarge and frame! I'm glad your modem is on the way.

There is a strong wind gusting at times, blowing snow off the trees, and I have no intention of leaving the house if I can help it. It's a puttering and decluttering sort of day!

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. I took a few photos of the hellebore and I think that was the best one. :) The modem arrived today, without any delays!

Your weather sounds fierce! Glad you have decided to stay home and organize things. :)

  6. That is a lovely hellebore. Years ago I'd planted one, and the young man I'd hired to mow thought it was a weed and cut it down! I never replaced it, not sure why not! Maybe this spring. Sorry you didn't get your bananas. Celie

    1. Thank you, Celie; the hellebore plant is looking great, isn't it? Maybe you will consider getting another hellebore plant to replace the one that got mowed down!
Well, I suppose, if I was going to be charged for something I didn't actually receive, then, bananas would have been better than something more expensive, like steak or salmon! Hope whoever received them enjoyed them! :D

    1. Thank you, Sharon. Yes, the modem was received, today. There is not a lot going on in the back garden, right now, but, I must post a picture of the front. It is full of flowers!

  8. Oh the hellebores are just a beautiful color. Very nice.
I walked around today and I noticed many daffodil bulbs poking through the ground and the Witch Hazel is starting to bloom. It often is blooming when snow is falling.
It is still very cold here.

I'm glad you were able to get the situation with the modern all fixed and hopefully it arrived yesterday.

You got a good price on your apples. I remember you paying a lot more per pound in the past. Too bad about your bananas though. You've had very little problems with your pickups though all in all.
Do you have a minimum and a fee? Aldi's has a $3.99 fee for orders under $35 ($10 minimum) and a $1.99 fee for orders over $35.
The other store I use has a $2.99 fee and orders must be over $30.

    1. The hellebores are very pretty, aren't they? How exciting to see the daffodils coming up! And the Witch Hazel, too. I planted daffodils here, once and they were beautiful. A few came up the second year, too, but, they are considered annuals, here.

The modem arrived yesterday, and my daughter connected it, today. It seems to be working well. :)

Apples have been priced $1.99, recently, but, they went on sale for $.99, this week. I can't complain too much about the bananas because I've received discounts on my bills quite a few times, as you know. Let someone else enjoy a bunch of free to them bananas! (Plus, friend R bought me some bananas, today!)
There is normally a $6.95 fee for pick up, BUT, they waived it during the pandemic; pick up is free with a minimum of $35 purchase. There is a fee for delivery, but, apparently, if you pay $79/year, delivery is "free" with a minimum purchase of $35; otherwise, there is a charge of $9.95 to $11.95 depending on your location (per the store website).

  9. I'm glad that you got the modem sorted out. It looks like you got some great bargains. There are a few things that I pick up in smaller containers, like coleslaw, even if they are likely to be used before the 'use by' date and are cheaper in a bigger pot, because they stay fresher.

    1. Thank you, Lyssa. I was able to get some good deals on the things I wanted. I'm hoping the smaller containers will keep fresher; we shall see how it works out. :)
