Thursday

Yellow Rose

My yellow rose bush is flowering; I love the deep yellow of the buds as they open.

Today was a partly cloudy, partly sunny day.  I called neighbor T to check on her and one of the aunts in the extended family; her daughter picked up the phone and said her mother was taking a nap, but I spoke with the daughter and she said that the family was keeping well except for her sister-in-law who was having bronchitis and was in self-quarantine.

In the afternoon, I walked in the drive way for a few minutes, then, went inside to have lunch, which was a salad, of lettuce, a carrot, and grapes, with the mango-chipotle vinaigrette.  In the evening, I watched news, knitted, spoke on the phone with my daughter, with friend R, cousin V and aunt T.

For tea, I made what we used to call pancakes in Sri Lanka, which are like crepes:

Pancakes

Sprinkled with sugar and lemon juice and rolled up - yum!

Later in the evening, I practiced the piano.  I'm practicing the old pieces and teaching myself some newer ones.

Then, my daughter and I video chatted and, as always, that was a good way to end my day.

Today, I am grateful for:
- Good health
- Garden flowers
- Being able to walk about in my garden and drive way
- Phone calls and video chats
- Comfort food

Today's joyful activity was video chatting with my daughter.

Friday's To Do List:
- Clean the bathrooms
- Do one deep cleaning task
- Paperwork/filing
- Have M tend to the garden

How was your Thursday?  What are your plans for Friday?

    1. Thank you, Live and Learn. It starts out very yellow and lightens up as it blooms and fades. :)

  2. Your time at home sounds relaxing and peaceful. Beautiful rose! I am spending more time on the phone which is unusual because I have a mild aversion to it! 💖

    1. It has been rather relaxed (perhaps a bit more relaxed than it should be!) and peaceful, too. Yes, I've been making more phone calls than usual, with checking up on people. Hope all is well with you and your family. Stay safe!

  3. Mum always made pancakes like that and rolled with lemon juice and sugar is the best way to eat them. Did you toss it properly to flip it over? Mum got one stuck on the ceiling once!

    1. Ha, ha, no, I didn't toss it to flip it over! Not quite that dextrous! I used a spatula!

  4. My husband's mother always made him palacinka when he was a little boy.
Her ancestors were Hungarian and that is the crepe from the area of the world they lived in.

I haven't made them in a while. But seeing yours makes me want to eat a few.

    3. Yum! That sounds delicious! I am all out of oats! It was one of those things I was going to replenish and then, forgot! Oh, well.

  5. I don't even like pancakes/crepes, but your crepe looks yummy, and now I am hungry ... talk about 'monkey see, monkey do'-I can successfully make a waffle, but my efforts with pancakes always closely resemble soggy blobs ... not designed for anyone to enjoy-
The climbing roses here are loaded with buds and a few blossoms are showing- the standard roses look rather pitiful though ... I missed pruning them at the proper time, so they are quite scraggy- I can only imagine what the ones at my house must be like ...I've had someone doing very minimal yard and house maintenance for several months now, so when I do get back as a regular inhabitant, there will be soooo much to catch up with- I am lucky though, as there is at least someone who has kept an eye on the place- I did tell them to take everything from the freezers and pantries, so they can save on a bit of shopping for themselves- once I do get back, there will be major shopping to think about ... I know that is going to happen SOMEDAY!
For the moment, Whitney remains comfortable and comforted by the remarkable hospice team she has- the people who do that work are beyond incredible- thank you for continued prayers-
Take care ... I am so glad you have friends and family to stay in contact with- you are all looking out for each other-
    Fondest wishes-
    Barb

    1. Waffles are good, too, Barb (especially if you can get them to come out of the waffle iron in one piece! Ha, ha!)

The garden there sounds like a lovely place with climbing roses and standards. I'm glad you have someone keeping an eye on your place while you are at Paige's. That was very kind of you to tell them to help themselves to your freezer and pantry. Yes, once all this is over, we will all be filling up our freezers and pantries, hopefully. I am afraid that prices will probably be double, if not triple, what they are now as I've been reading a few articles about anticipated problems with food production and distribution due to this virus.

I'm glad to hear that Whitney remains comfortable and taken care of by a wonderful team of care givers. I will continue to keep her in my prayers.

By the way, are you anywhere near Sugar Land?

  6. Is that the rose that was in your last post? It is beautiful. I love pancakes with lemon and sugar. We called them pancakes too and the thick American type we called pikelets although they are smaller, we had them with jam and cream as a treat.

I was watching a programe on TV where a neurologist said that learning to knit and knitting were good for brain health and keeping alzheimers away. Guess I will be getting my knitting out of the cupboard!! Have a great day Bless.

    1. Actually, it is a different rose, but, taken at the same time as the earlier bud. There were about 7 or 8 roses on the rose bush when I took the photos.

Good to know that knitting is good for the brain. I'm sure crochet is, too. :) Enjoy your knitting (if you need help with the heels of the sock, let me know - I can try to help).

  7. Hi Bless, That yellow rose is gorgeous! I can't wait for my rose bushes to bloom. They are almost there. Thursday was enjoyable. I did some watering and planting in the garden, read my new book, did yoga, cooked, and caught up on the news. Today has been quiet and peaceful. Lula and I took a walk, I ordered a couple of washable face masks on Etsy, and I am catching up on blogs.

    1. Hi Stephenie! Thank you. Your roses should start flowering soon. Sounds like you had a busy and productive day, yesterday. Are you at your cottage these days or do you still go up to the cabin, too?

  8. Those pancakes are exactly how we used to eat them in England on Shrove Tuesday. I still serve them that way. In Austria they are popular filled with apricot jam and dusted with powdered sugar.
I've done a bit of this and that today, including washing a quilt, (thankful that it didn't fall apart, you never know), washed bottles to use for syrup, refilled bird feeders, vacuumed the basement stairs and answered some e-mails and taken a nap. It was rainy and dull so a nap seemed better than a walk.

    1. I suppose we learned to make them from the British. My granny used to put jam in them and fold them in quarters. Sometimes, people used to fill them with a sweetened coconut filling and that was good, too.

Sounds like you got a lot done, today. I'm glad you were able to get in a nap, too! Rain is in our forecast for next week - maybe I'll nap then!

  9. When I had my gardens at the old house, I loved what I would call my walk-abouts. They were simply strolls in the garden to check on my plants and see what was coming up next and just generally admiring the flowers. I don't have gardens here yet, so I am very much enjoying seeing yours. As soon as I can work the soil, I will be out there turning the sod and amending the soil the best I can.

    1. I am sure you will be out there, planting your garden as soon as it warms up a bit. I am looking forward to seeing your garden, as it comes along. Mother Nature is watering mine as I type this! :)
