Wednesday's Accomplishments

Roses

I had to take a picture of one of my rose bushes, this morning.  This rose bush had to be pruned to a single stem, earlier, this year, due to damage from the drought and rose borers.  I think it is safe to say that the bush has recovered from that drastic pruning.

Today, I met with our Human Resources people to hand in a copy of the document that I had been looking for and found over the weekend.  I discussed my retirement plans with them and received some additional information about the process.  Later, I informed my supervisors of my planned retirement date.  I think they appreciate the fact that I am giving them ample notice, so they can decide on how to divide up my work load, etc.  I am starting to get excited!  I feel like I should make a count-down calendar!

After I came home, I had a relaxed evening.  I called cousin P to check on her and, later, video chatted with my daughter.

Today, I am grateful for:
- Being able to retire
- Finding out more about my retirement benefits
- Knowing when the time was right to make the decision to retire
- Feeling I made the right decision
- Roses blooming in the garden

How was your Wednesday?  Did you have a good day?

    1. Thank you, Sharon. At one time, my garden was full of such rose bushes. I had almost 100 rose bushes! But, over the years, drought, pests, and neglect caused the majority of them to die. I am cherishing the few bushes that did survive. :)

  4. You're another step closer to this new, exciting phase of life. Yay! BTW, maybe you should severely prune this rose bush every year. It is so pretty.

    1. Yes, I am one step closer; just a few more to take and that will be that! Yes, this particular rose bush took the pruning well, didn't it?

    1. Thank you, Carolyn. I am first planning to sleep in and just relax for several weeks! Then, I might consider a few activities. I haven't planned to do any traveling, yet, but, who knows?

  6. Did I miss it? When are you planning on retiring? It will be well deserved.

Lovely rose bushes. We always had roses growing up. Even now on the little bit of dirt outside Mum's front door (to her flat) she has a rose bush. I must admit I haven't tried to grow one.

    1. Sharon, no, you didn't miss anything. :) I am just now making plans to retire. I am planning to retire in July, after I complete my 35 years of service. I attended a general retirement seminar, last week; met with HR to discuss one or two things and to update my personal information on file, yesterday, and informed my supervisors. I will be filling out and submitting the official notices and paperwork, next month. Retirement will take effect towards the end of July. :)

At one time, I had almost 100 rose bushes in the garden! But then came 5 years of continuous drought, water restrictions, ill health which limited my ability to garden, and now, I barely have 10 rose bushes left! Maybe I'll plant more, when I am retired and have time to garden!

  7. Once I made the decision to retire, I just couldn't wait for the date to come around. I became very impatient for work to come to an end. Fortunately, I made the decision to NOT take holidays that summer until the very end, so I could go out early. A count-down calendar sounds like a great idea.

Your yellow roses are so lovely. I think you are right. They have definitely bounced back from what ailed them.

    1. Susan, my initial plan was to take my accrued vacation time towards the end, before my retirement went into effect, just so I could stop having to go to the office. I still might do that. However, they will also pay out whatever vacation I don't take and I am wondering if I should rather do that. Will ponder on that a bit more.

I think I need to get some plant food to reward that rose bush and encourage the others to do their best!

  8. The rose bush is so beautiful. I'm no gardener but I would say it's definitely recovered.
Oh yes! Make a count-down calendar. How many days have you got left to work? X

Well, I am planning to retire towards the end of July. So, basically, I have about 2 1/2 months left to work. :)

  10. I think we will all start getting excited about your retirement! One comment I noticed you replied to, concerned whether or not to take unused vacation time or accept payment instead. Of course it is a personal thing, but I will never forget reading in a book written by someone who took a year sailing round the world, that you can always come up with more money, but you can never regain time once it has gone. Something to chew on!

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. Yes, it is something to think about - money vs time. Not that I am planning to go sailing... :)
