Croissants on Thursday

Almond Croissant


On Thursday, I stopped by the farmers' market on my way to the new office, and bought an almond croissant (S1.75) for my breakfast/snack.   This is my favorite type of croissant, I think.  I had half of it for breakfast and ate the other half after dinner,

I had a good day at the office.  It was warm enough in the morning, with the morning sun streaming in from my cubicle window, to be in only my inner blouse and outer shirt.  It was only in the afternoon, when there was no more sunshine coming through the window and the a/c kicked in, that I had to put on my cardigan. 

In the afternoon, I met with the Section head to update her on the status of one of my projects, since my supervisor was on vacation.  Afterwards, I mentioned to her that I had two personal days I had to take since I would lose them if I didn't take them.  I usually take them in November, during Thanksgiving week, to extend that holiday, but I won't be there during Thanksgiving this year!  She said to go ahead and take them now, so I decided to take them on Friday and Monday. 

After I came home from work, I relaxed.  I watched some TV and knitted.  The front of the sweater is coming along, nicely.  And exchanged emails with a friend.  The only housework I did was cleaning up after Dancer, who occasionally leaves the litter box before he is quite finished!

Aunt C called and I had a nice chat with her.  Later, friend R called to say she wasn't sure if she could join me for the meditation session at the temple, this week.  I said it was OK, not to worry about it.  Sitting for an hour or so in silence, without doing anything isn't easy.  But, before she rang off, she said she will call me to let me know for sure, on Friday evening.  As long as she calls me by 6:30 p.m., I should be able to pick her up and drive us to the temple to be there by 7:00 p.m. 

Later, I video chatted with my daughter.  And before I went to bed, I wrote out another Big Long To Do List for this weekend! 

On Thursday, I was grateful for:
- Being able to hear a song a friend recorded and sent to me
- Exchanging emails with her and learning things from her in the process
- Almond croissants from the farmers' market (I am going to miss them)
- Chatting with friends and family
- Being able to relax with my knitting

  1. I think my favourite is a maple and pecan Danish pastry although I don't eat cakes or pastries very often.

    I hope you enjoy your long weekend - a good way to use up your remaining holiday. I hope the weather is kind to you.

    1. Maple and pecan Danish sounds delicious, too. There's a cream cheese Danish I used to like, but, I lost my liking for sweet cream cheese fillings when I had my chemo treatments and haven't recovered it, yet.

      Thanks, Eileen. Today has been drizzly and cool and it is supposed to rain, tomorrow, but I don't mind.

  2. I don't eat many croissants, but when I lived in New Orleans I did have some pretty good plain ones. Oh, so flaky and buttery. Yum.

  3. Okay, I admit I am a bit of a "piggo" - I would have eaten that whole almond croissant at one go, I'm sure! It looks super-delicious.
    Our climate is playing tricks as we had 30°C one day and last night the temperature dropped down to about 3°C and it has only been 15°C during the day. No meals on the deck. However, the sun has been shining and it has been quite pleasant out. This morning around 6 am a crow was making a noise and I suspect it might have been the one that I have fed peanuts to. If he was calling for his breakfast he was out of luck, but when he showed up in the yard this afternoon I gave him a peanut or two.

    1. LOL, Bushlady, and I was scolding myself for eating it all in one day! :D But, it was pretty good!

      Sounds like winter is reluctant to give way to summer! It has been a cool and drizzy day, here, too. Rain in the forecast for tomorrow.

      Too funny about the crow demanding his breakfast! We used to say that a crow cawing in the front yard in the morning meant unexpected visitors later in the day.

  4. Glad you get to take the days off. Better to use them than to lose them! I can't understand people who don't take the days off due to them. In the US we get far fewer than other countries. Even if you have nothing else to do but relax a day off is always good!

    1. Thanks, Sharon. I try to take my vacations around holidays to stretch out the holidays. We would get Thurs and Fri off for Thanksgiving, so I'd take 3 days of vacation that week on the other days and get the entire week off, for example. But, even so, I've saved most of my vacation time, instead of taking it off! I have the option of taking time off or getting paid for the unused vacation time.

  6. I like pecan plaits (Danish pastry filled with maple syrup flavoured jam, plaited and sprinkled with pecans). I don't think I could eat only half. I never had an almond croissant, only plain ones which I like with cheese. Are personal days different to holidays or annual leave?

    1. Your pecan plaits sound a lot like the pastry mentioned in a previous comment; they both sound delicious.

      The two personal days I mentioned are called "Floating Holidays" and are in addition to regular holidays such as New Year's Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, etc. (which are federal and/or state holidays) and vacation days.

  7. Good for you got taking the time off that you earned, Bless! When you’ve been working four day weeks you’ve been using accrued Personal Days? What a nice benefit and you earned it. A nice way to ease into retirement. So exciting!!!

    1. Thank you, Carolyn. I do what is called a compressed work schedule. Our pay period is a two week period; we call it bi-weekly, here. Some of my British readers might call it fortnightly. I am expected to put in 80 hours of work during that pay period. The standard work schedule is 5 days a week, 8 hours a day, and I did that for awhile, when I had to drop off and pick up daughter from elementary school. At one time, I worked 4 days a week, 10 hours each day - 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (30 minutes off for lunch, which wasn't paid for). Currently, I am on a schedule called the 9/80 - I work for 9 hours a day for 8 days (= 72 hrs.) and 8 hours on the 9th day for a total of 80 hrs. during the bi-weekly pay period and get one day off. Technically, my work week starts on a Friday afternoon and goes on till noon the following Friday, so that I work exactly 40 hours during each "work week" as defined. But, under this schedule, I have every other Monday off and the other Monday is my "short" day, when I work only 8 hrs. Some of my colleagues have alternate Fridays off, instead of Mondays. I have had Fridays off, as well, but I prefer having a Monday off to a Friday off.

  8. What a nice relaxing day you had. I liked coming home from a work week and just taking it easy doing something I loved. In the back of my mind I knew I had a whole week-end to get down to business, which always made that first evening such a joy.
