When Scrap Baskets Overflow

I had a bit of an "off" day, on Thursday.  Just didn't feel up to doing anything.  So, I gave myself a day off!

First, I called one of my friends and chatted with her for a bit.  Then, I decided that, since another friend's daughter is to have a baby, later this year, I should check my fabric stash to see if I had any fabric that was suitable to make a baby gift.  As I sorted through the fabric, I decided that I really ought to do something to bring my fabric stash under control.  My scrap baskets are overflowing!

An Abundance of Fabric Scraps!

I have been wanting to make a string quilt for some time, so, that's what I decided to do:

String Quilt Blocks

I made several individual blocks.  I set them out to see how they might look when arranged so that the diagonals form a secondary design:

Sample Layout
I know I said I wasn't going to start a new quilt before I finished my other quilts, but, I changed my mind!  Obviously, today's joyful activity was playing with fabric!

Today's book decluttering:

6/13 Book Decluttering
I've had this book since 1984; it's time to let it go!

Today, I am grateful for:
- A cooler day
- An abundance of fabric scraps!
- Playing with fabric
- Being able to take a "me" day
- Friends who are wise and share their wisdom with me

Cooler on Wednesday

It was cooler, today, with the highs only in the 90s.

I took the car in for a service, today.  I was told that, in addition to the oil change, I also needed to do a few other things, since the car now has over 36,000 miles.  They estimated it would take two to three hours (it actually took a little less than two hours).  I waited in the nicely air conditioned customer lounge, read a bit, and watched TV.  They had an Indian cooking show on; I tried to change the channel, but I couldn't get the remote to work and neither could the three workers there that I asked!  Not that there's anything wrong with Indian cooking - they were showing how to make samosas, chicken biriyani, rice pudding (kheer), mango lassi, etc.  But, it was making me hungry!  LOL!  The car service bill came to $435.09; I budget $100 per month for car maintenance, so that was not an issue.

After the car service was done, I drove to the pharmacy to pick up my medication refill and came home.  Had lunch and went through another couple of file folders.  I am now starting to have a little room in the filing cabinet!  At least, in this one drawer!  Yay!  After that, I tried to sew a bit, but, even with the stand fan playing on me, it was too hot in the living room/dining area where I have the sewing machine set up, as it gets the afternoon/evening sun.  So, I cleaned my bathroom, watered the indoor plants and, because it was cooler outside than inside, by then, watered both the backyard and the front.  Even the succulents in the front have got sunburnt!

Today's book decluttering:

Day 12 Book Decluttering
Which brings me to the question: just how many books relating to Christmas does one need?  I know I gave away at least one other Christmas related book ("A Patchwork Christmas") in an earlier decluttering session and this is the third one in this decluttering session!  I still have nine more Christmas related books on the shelf!

Cousin P called in the evening and we chatted for a bit.  Later, I video chatted with my daughter.

Today's joyful activity was watering the garden.

Today, I am grateful for:
- Getting the car serviced and having the funds set aside for that
- A nice, air conditioned waiting area, with TV, etc., at the service station
- More drama-free medication refills!
- An abundance of books!
- A slightly cooler day

Still Hot on Tuesday

I left the house at 9:00 a.m. to go to my medical appointment, this morning, and the temperature was already 85F.  It was 98F when I came home at 11:30 a.m.  It topped 100F, again, this afternoon.

My appointment with the new podiatrist went well.  He checked my feet, there were no issues, all was well, and I have an appointment for a return visit in August.

After I came home, I did a load of laundry, called the car service center (made an appointment for tomorrow), and returned a couple of phone calls.  I now have an appointment to meet with my financial planner, scheduled for next week.

In the afternoon, I watched some TV - World Cup soccer (the U.S. Women's win over Thailand), news, etc., and went through another file folder of papers.  This one contained my health insurance coverage and benefits confirmation letters for the past 20+ years!  I should have tossed the prior year's letter when the new one was received, each year, but, instead, I just filed the newest one in front of the older ones and the file just grew.  The older letters had social security numbers, etc., so I have to cut them up, instead of just tearing them.  That's taking some time.

I also called friend R to check on her.

My daughter flew back from her conference, today.  It was a direct flight, she said, and went fairly smoothly for the most part.  Later, we video chatted (we didn't do that while she was away).  Today's joyful activity was video chatting with my daughter.

Today's decluttering included two brochures and this book:

Mini Heatwave on Monday

We have had a mini heatwave, yesterday and today.  Yesterday, we were 99F, today, we topped 100F.  We will cool down, during the week, according to the weather forecasters but, today, at 5:00 p.m., when I came home after running errands, it was 98F in the shade.  It was about 10 degrees cooler inside the house, though, and I was comfortable.

In the morning, after I had my tea and responded to blog comments, etc., I called the new primary care doctor's office and made an appointment to see her.  The earliest appointment date they could give me was July 22, which isn't too bad, I suppose.  I need to see if I have enough medication refills to last me till then, though!

After that, I did some paperwork that needed my attention.  Last year, when I renewed my driver's license, I applied for, and received, what is known as a Real I.D., to comply with the new requirements.  The application form required two documents as proof of residency and identity.  There were samples of what those documents could be, listed on the application and website, etc.  I took several copies of documents with me, including utility bills and bank statements, etc., a file folder of them, actually, and presented them all to the staff who issued me the Real I.D.

Well, on Saturday, I received a letter from the DMV, stating that, at the time of issuance of my Real I.D., I had provided only one proof of residency!  The letter had my mailing address printed on it and the instructions stated that, if that was my current address, then, I was to check the box stating it is my address, sign and date the letter, and mail it back to them in the self-addressed, postage pre-paid envelope provided, and they will consider it as the second required proof of residency document.  If it wasn't my address, then, I was to check the other box, and provide copies of 2 documents from the list of documents as indicated.

When I first received the letter, I was a bit miffed.  It was the way the letter was worded, very accusatory - "you only provided one document".  No!  I had taken multiple documents; it was the staff person who picked just one of them for the files!  I wanted to write something to that effect on the letter I was sending back, but I decided it was best to just leave things as they were and simply comply.  So, I checked the box stating it was my current mailing address, etc., and signed and dated it.

However, I wanted to take a photocopy of the document and the envelope they had provided before I mailed it, for my records (and this is how I end up with a full file cabinet!).  Unfortunately, the printer we have at home (which is a photocopier as well), wouldn't co-operate!  It kept telling me that it couldn't detect the magenta ink!  Really?  I pressed black, only, but that didn't work.  I took a photo of the document with my cell phone, but I wasn't satisfied with that.

So, I went to the library, in the afternoon, to use their photocopier.  I took a copy each of the letter and the envelope (it wouldn't do legal size copies, so I couldn't put both documents down on the glass for one copy, and I didn't want to reduce the size of the image, either).  It cost $.25 per copy.  Never mind; that $.50 paid to the library for copies was well worth it, to me.  While I was there, I spoke with one of the library workers and she said she, too, received the same letter!  I guess they are sending these letters out to verify that the addresses people provided are the correct addresses?

After that, I went to the post office to mail the letter and a decluttered book that one reader had asked me if she could have.  Then, I went to the gas station to put gas to the car.  Gas was $3.65 per gallon and I put $40 worth of gas.  I am keeping to my $50 per month budget for gas, without any trouble.  I also went to the store to buy more cat food - dry cat food, this time, as they were all out of the sale priced cat food, last week.  I bought two 13 lb. bags, this time (I go through about one bag a week, since I feed all the cats in the neighborhood and at least one possum!)

I rested a bit, after I came home, then, dusted the living room, dining area, and my bedroom, cleaned the fridge, took the trash cans to the curb, and watered the garden, both front (by hand) and back (sprinklers).

Today's book decluttering:

Potluck/Chili Cook Off on Sunday

One of my former supervisors held his annual potluck/chili cook off, today.  I received the invitation in the mail several weeks ago and I had looked forwards to it.

So, this morning, I baked an apple dump cake to take as my contribution to the potluck.  That is becoming my favorite dessert to take to these sort of gatherings!  Someone told me that it was so good that she looked up the recipe, right then and there!  She asked me if it was as simple as it sounded and I told her it was!

I had a lovely afternoon.  It was nice to see some former colleagues.  When the deputy director of my department saw me, her first question was if I was ready to come back!  LOL!  I was a bit taken aback, as I wasn't expecting her to ask me that!  I told her that no, I liked being able to sleep in, in the mornings.  But, before she left, she came over to me and told me that if I changed my mind, to let her know!  Rather gratifying, in a way!

It turned out to be a warm day.  We reached 99F, this afternoon.  The party was held outdoors, and there was a shady patio area, but, it was still quite hot.  I stayed until almost 5:00 p.m. (the party started at 1:00 p.m. and I was one of the first to arrive); there were still a few people when I left, but, I was ready to come home, by then.

I had a cup of tea after I came home and relaxed.  Watched a program on TV and texted back and forth with my daughter.  She gave her presentation, today, and said it went well.  Afterwards, she went to dinner with two colleagues who were also attending the conference.

Saturday's book decluttering:

6/8  Book Decluttering
Seems a bit ironic to me that I am decluttering my crafts books now that I finally have time to craft!  But, I looked through this book and decided there really wasn't anything in there that I wanted to make to give as gifts.

Sunday's book decluttering:

6/9 Book Decluttering
Today, I am grateful for:
- Getting to socialize with former colleagues
- Being asked if I am ready to come back, by the deputy director!
- Good food and pleasant company
- A relaxed evening
- Daughter did well with her presentation

Today's joyful activity was attending the potluck and socializing with former colleagues.

 Monday's To Do List:
- Do some paperwork
- Go to the post office
- Put gas to the car
- Call neighbor T to check on her (she didn't call me for our usual Sunday morning chat)
- Dust living room & dining area

The Quilt Maker's Cat

Hi, everyone.  This is Dancer, again.

You all know how much I help my Mummy with making her quilts, don't you?

I help her with selecting the fabric:

"These pieces will be good, Mummy"

With arranging the quilt blocks:

"Yes, this arrangement is good"

With testing the comfort level:

"It's quite comfy, Mummy"
So, with all that help, you'd think Mummy would make me a quilt for my own comfy, afternoon naps, wouldn't you?

But, no!  I, the quilt maker's most helpful cat, have to settle for the cover of the cutting mat:

"My afternoon nap mat"
It was leaning against the sofa back and I had to put it down before I could lie on it.  And then, I noticed that the edge of the mat was not trimmed properly, so I tried to fix it:

"Let me trim off this edge piece"
It's not easy when one is a cat and can't use a pair of scissors or a rotary cutter to trim off the edge, but, I have sharp claws and sharp teeth!

"I'll just bite this down to size"
I don't need your help, Mummy.  I can make my own quilt, thank you very much!  Humph!

But, Dancer, you have the whole spare room bed...

Oh, yes, I do, don't I?

"OK, it's not the same as having my own quilt, but it's a good spot to have a sulk"

And then, to add insult to injury, she put that nasty flea medication stuff on me!  I don't even have fleas!  She says it's to make sure they stay off of me.  A likely story.  I don't believe a word of what she says.  But, she rewarded me for being a brave boy (I didn't try to get away or scratch her) by giving me a spoon of tuna, afterwards!  Yum!  I'm still going to bug her for more tuna when she goes to make her evening tea, though!  But, until then, I'll take a snooze on the quilt in the spare room.  Thanks for reading this, blog friends.

More Grocery Shopping on Friday

A sunny and warm day, today.

My daughter called me in the morning, as she was about to board her plane; she was flying out to Baltimore, Maryland for a work-related conference.  She will fly back on Tuesday.  She will be giving a presentation at the conference, so she was excited about that (and a little nervous).  She put together four outfits for the four days of conferences and sent me photos for my opinion: a pale blue dress with a black jacket; a black and white skirt with a white blouse and red jacket, another black and white skirt with red blouse and black jacket, and a black and white striped blouse, worn with black slacks and a Royal blue jacket.  I asked her if she tried the pale blue dress with the blue jacket, but she said she didn't like the combination of the two shades of blue.   I approved her selections, of course.

I went back to sleep after she called and then, woke up when one of the doctor's offices called to reschedule my Monday's appointment to Tuesday.  They were unable to give me an afternoon appointment, however, saying the doctor was double and triple booked for the afternoon.  So, I settled for a morning appointment.  It's not too horribly early (10:15 a.m.).  I'll need to leave a little after 9:00 a.m.

Then, I had a cup of tea, responded to blog comments, etc., and had a bowl of leftover mung beans for brunch.

In the afternoon, I went to do some grocery shopping.  First, to the dollar store, mostly to buy Epsom salt for the garden, but, I also bought another box of cake mix and two cans of apple pie filling because I need to make a dessert to take to a pot luck on Sunday (yes, I am making another apple dump cake!), and I bought a box of cheese crackers for snacking and a can of spaghetti sauce.  My food items came to $5.00

6/7 Groceries
Afterwards, I went to the grocery store and bought:
2 pork chops @$.99/lb = $1.16
2 mangoes @$.50 = $1.00
3 bananas @ $.49/lb = $.55 ( 3 bananas seem to be the ideal number for me, as I can eat them before they get too ripe)
1 jar Nutella = $1.99
1 loaf of bread = $1.99
1 lb store brand mozzarella cheese = $3.59 (the 8 oz grated package was $2.89!)
Total = $10.28

Total spent on groceries today = $5 + $10.28 = $15.28

In addition, I also bought 10 cans of tuna in water at $.59 each, which came to $5.90, however, these cans are for Dancer, as he no longer likes the canned cat food!  He gets a spoonful of the tuna twice a day, when I make my tea in the morning and evening.  Occasionally, when I open a new can, I take a little of the tuna for myself for a sandwich (like I did, today), but, for the most part, the cans are his tuna, so I am counting them as cat food and not part of my grocery budget (which is why I didn't include them in the photo).

Dollar Store Receipt

Grocery Store Receipt

My June grocery budget is $75 - $23.82 overspent in May = $51.18

Spent to date = $.69 + $7.00 + $5.57 + $15.28 = $28.54

$51.18 - $28.54 = $22.64

While I was out shopping, I received a text from the airline that daughter was travelling on stating that her flight was delayed.  She was flying to St. Louis first, and needed to make a connecting flight from there.  She texted me when she arrived at the St. Louis airport; she had just enough time to make her connection!  They had just begun to board!  I was glad she was able to make the connection!

After I came home from grocery shopping, I had a banana, a slice of bread with some of Dancer's tuna, and a cup of tea.

Then, I watched the news and went through three of my file folders.  One pertained to a medical bill from 2010; I had to file a grievance with the insurance company on that one before it was resolved - the insurance company sent me a letter saying they were not going to pay it, but, I wasn't responsible for paying it, either, and I had to send a copy of that letter to the urgent care center!  I was told by the insurance company that the clinic would "write it off as a loss" (I had written that all down in the file!), but I kept all the paperwork, "just in case" they decided to bill me, again.  However, it's been 9 years and I doubt very much if they will re-bill me, now!

One was the file for the previous car, which was purchased in 2000 and which I traded in when I bought my present car, almost five years ago!  I still had the original purchase invoice, etc., even though I no longer owned the car!

The third file had to do with an accident in 2013, when that same car was knocked by a tour bus (I was at a stop sign, waiting to turn right; the bus was turning left and it knocked my car when it turned!).  The insurance company paid for the repairs and rental car, etc.  But, I kept copies of all the invoices, emails, correspondence with the insurance company, etc.

Today, I figured I no longer needed to retain any of the papers in these three files.  There was no sensitive information in these files, so I just tore up everything - it went by much faster than cutting up my mother's documents.

Friend M came to do the garden in the early evening (he tidied up the place and applied the Epsom salt to various plants).  I  had him try a little of my stir-fry with the radish seed pods, as he had never tried eating radish pods.  He liked the stir-fry and I gave him some to take home and have with his dinner.

Daughter texted me when she got to Baltimore.  Apparently, her flight from St. Louis didn't take off at the scheduled departure time (even though they had all boarded as scheduled) and her arrival in Baltimore was delayed by almost one hour.  By the time she made her way to the hotel, her colleagues were already there, waiting for her.  Later, she made her way to a restaurant and sent me a photo of her dinner:

Miso Glazed Salmon
Looks delicious, doesn't it?  Miso glazed salmon, served on a bed of rice, with miso sauce and snow peas.  She said she couldn't finish it!

I cooked the pork chops I bought today, with a teriyaki glaze.  I wasn't hungry because I had a tuna sandwich, earlier, so I put the cooked pork chops in the fridge.

Today's  book decluttering was this book:

Day 7 Book Decluttering
I've had this book since 1984 (I used to write my name and the date I bought the book on the inside cover).  Obviously printed prior to the use of rotary cutters, as it doesn't even mention them and explains how to make templates and cut around them for the quilt pieces.  Time to let it go.

Today, I am grateful for:
- My daughter had a safe flight to Baltimore
- M helping with the garden
- Good deals at the grocery store
- Decluttering three more files
- Decluttering another book

Saturday's To Do List:
- More decluttering
- Clean the kitchen (as I didn't do it on Friday)
- A load of laundry
- Water the front garden

How was your Friday?  Can you believe that the first week of June is already over?  What are your plans for Saturday?
