Ending June, Starting July

Garden Flowers

The first half of the year is over and done with!  The second half of the year has already started!  Seems to me that the year is just whizzing by!

The vet called me on Friday afternoon to go over Dancer's blood test results.  His blood pressure was a little high, she said (well, of course it would be, he was upset about having to go to the vet's in the first place and was hyperventilating in the car!); she understands that it might be due to being at the clinic and it was not high enough to be over concerned.  She will want to check his pressure in about 6 months.  But, his thyroid levels have not improved and so, she wants to increase the dosage strength.  She said she will call in the new prescription to the pharmacy and I suppose they will let me know when it is ready to be picked up.  In the meantime, she wants to see him again in a month from when he starts his new medication.

Gardener M was here on Friday evening to tend to the garden and he fertilized the fruit trees and watered the garden.  He also brought me two tiny new plants - a striped aloe ("Because your aloes are thriving") and a dwarf jade:

New Aloe and Jade Plant

They are sharing a 2" square pot, right now, but we will pot them up separately, later.

June ended on a nice warm note (finally!) and July started out with summer like temperatures, with a high of 90F.  I started off the day in a long sleeved shirt and switched to a short sleeved blouse in the afternoon and the socks came off, too!  You know it's summer when I go barefoot!  Today's high is only 84F and I still have my socks on!

On July 1st, I made milkrice and seeni sambol as is my custom, picked some red roses for the altar and the mantel, and lit incense to cleanse the air.

After brunch, I did a load of laundry (sofa dust sheets, the towels Dancer lies on, etc.) and recovered the sofas with the spare dust sheets.  I  fluffed everything in the dryer, on air/no heat, for 10 minutes to get any Dancer fur out of them and then, hung them up to dry.

Later in the evening, I watered parts of the back garden and picked some chillies, green beans (two kinds - flat Italian and round French), and a handful of blueberries:

Garden Harvest

The tomatoes were picked on Friday, when M was here.

My cousin R called me on Saturday; she has recently retired from being a special education teacher and is planning to go to Scotland for a few weeks (her husband is Scottish and they have a house there, as well).  She was calling to let me know that she has been cleaning out her closets (again) and has a bag of clothes set aside for my daughter and me!  She wanted to know if I wanted to pick up the clothes now or wait until she returned from Scotland and I said I'll pick them up later as I'm sure she is busy getting ready to leave, later this week.  I still have all the clothes she gave me at the end of last year!  Some of them have become favorite pieces of clothing.  I will have to declutter my closet to accommodate the new clothes!  What a blessing, though!  I will share the clothes with my daughter, of course.

While I was out watering in the garden, I missed a call from my oldest half-brother.  He lives in Sri Lanka, but, he is visiting his daughter in North Carolina, having made the trip to attend his oldest grandson's high school graduation.  I called him back, later, but, due to the time difference (they are three hours ahead of me), his daughter answered the phone and said her parents were already asleep.  I said I'll call back in the morning.  Afterwards, I called my half-sister and chatted with her for a bit.  She lives in southern California, so we are in the same time zone.

This morning, I woke up extra early (a little after 6:00 a.m.; after going to bed after 3:00 a.m.!) and called my half-brother, just as his daughter was leaving the house to pick up her son from somewhere (the phone number I had is her cell phone and of course she needed to have her cell phone with her).  We agreed that her father would call me once she had returned home.  He called me within the hour and we had a little chat.  My half-brother is 16 years older than I am and according to my mother, he was the only one who could soothe me when I would cry as an infant.  He was sorry he couldn't fly out to the west coast to visit my half-sister and me on this trip.  But, he said he's planning to return next year, for his granddaughter's graduation and he's planning to visit us on that trip.  It will be nice to see him, again.

I decided not to go back to sleep afterwards.  Maybe this early morning rising will help reset my sleep schedule!

I changed my bed sheets this morning, washed the flannel sheets and the top quilt and remade my bed with cotton sheets.  I have two sets of flannel sheets and two sets of cotton sheets, but, one of the cotton fitted sheets is extremely worn and threadbare.  It's not torn (yet), but, you can see right through it!  I think I might have to buy a new set of cotton sheets this summer or see if I can turn a mistakenly delivered full sized fitted sheet  (way back at the very beginning of the pandemic, when a store included a sheet set I had not ordered with my order and they said to keep the sheets when I called them about it) into a queen sized fitted sheet!  I've done that, earlier, with another full sized fitted sheet, by cutting it and inserting a panel.

My cousin V called this morning (cousin R's sister) and we chatted a bit.  Later, former neighbor T called.  So, the month is off to a good start where family and friends are concerned, with many phone calls!

Plans for the rest of the day include cooking the tray of chicken I bought (planning to make a curry).  I cooked all the hamburger patties on Saturday night and had one for my dinner, with the end slices from the previous loaf of bread substituting for a bun.  I kept one hamburger patty in the fridge for another meal during the week and froze the other eight burger patties for future meals.

As we start July, I am grateful for:

- Phone calls with family, especially my half-brother
- Cousin R offering more clothes
- The garden harvest
- Working appliances
- The warmer temperatures!

July joyful activities have included speaking with family and friends.

How is your weekend coming along? How is the weather where you are?

  1. I was wondering if the vet started Dancer on a low dose of thyroid medication before increasing the dose if necessary and obviously it is. The doctor explained that to me when she started me on thyroid medication, she thinks the chemo may have damaged my thyroid gland and they need to do regular blood test checks.
I do like your red roses and your garden harvest looks grand.
How nice to have some new clothes to look forward to and a visit next year from your brother.
So happy the weather is warming up for you. It felt rather chilly here yesterday and I'm back to wearing a cardigan in the house.

    1. Yes, Eileen; the vet had told me that she will start Dancer off on the lowest dose and then, adjust as needed. I think it is the best way to proceed with medications. Sorry to hear that you have to take thyroid medications due to the after effects of chemo.
I'm loving the roses and the garden produce. I cooked some of the green beans (the flat Italian ones) for dinner, tonight. My daughter said that she, too, cooked the green beans I sent up to her in her care package, today. :)
Yes, it's nice to have the new clothes and my brother's visit to look forward to. My cousin is tall and slim and I am short and round, but, somehow, most of her clothes fit both my daughter and I! I don't have much of a budget for clothing, so, receiving new to me clothes is a blessing.
It's been lovely, weather-wise! It's more humid than we are used to, but, I'm not complaining. Are you glad that the weather has cooled off a bit for you?

    2. Yes I do like it cooler as I don't tolerate the heat too well and my hay fever flares up but it's raining hard at the moment so will have to wait to take Tilly out.

    3. Hope the rain ceases so you and Tilly can enjoy a walk. :) It's supposed to go up to 32F today! I'm loving it!

  2. How lovely are your red & white flowers for July 1st, aka Canada Day! (col). How nice that your cousin gifts you with her closet clearing. I have a sister that does that for me - it certainly helps the budget. I'm sending special positive healing thoughts for Dancer & that this dose of the thyroid medicine is the one. As cats age they seem develop all kinds of "little" problems that have big costs. We once had a diabetic kitty that required insulin injections twice a day. A visit with your half brother next year sound exciting & hopefully all the family in California can organize their time to gather together.

    1. Thank you, Mary-Lou; I'm glad you enjoyed my Canada Day display of flowers! (A happy coincidence, to be quite honest! :D)
My daughter and I are blessed with my cousin's closet clearing! I share them with some of my friends and one of them sends some of the items to her daughters and granddaughter in Sri Lanka and they pass items along to their cousins and friends! The clothes go a long way!
Thank you for the positive healing thoughts for Dancer. He's going to be 15 this month (he was born somewhere around the 4th, although I didn't get him until early August).
It will be nice to see my half-brother again (I last saw him a few years ago). Hope it all works out well. :)

  3. I like the striped aloe plant. I haven't seen one of those before. And look at your produce - especially those tomatoes. I am still waiting on the first tomato of the season. Always a treat.

    1. The stiped aloe looks really nice, doesn't it? I'm loving all the fresh produce from the garden! I cooked some of the green beans, last night and kept the rest for later in the week. :)

  4. Thanks so much Bless for your visit to my blog! It is very muggy here and I really don’t like Summer at all. I look forward to Fall. Having said that, I do love the beautiful scenery everywhere. Your veggies look good enough to eat, yum. I hope that Dancer is doing okay on his meds. Enjoy your day.❤️

    1. You are welcome (I'm assuming this is from Ratnamurti?) I hope that the cooler Fall weather will be coming soon to you. The vegetables are as fresh as they can be and fully worth the cost of water! Thank you for the well wishes for Dancer.

  5. What a good idea to enlarge a fitted sheet with an extra panel. Well, it must be warm for you to put the lighter sheets on your bed! It is hot again here, actually too hot to sit on the deck. DH has gone for a swim, but I don't like to go anywhere near hot sand!

    1. I did that with another full sized fitted sheet many years ago and it worked well. Not only did I put lighter sheets, I even removed one quilt! :D It's another warm day, here (high is supposed to be 90F - only 82F right now, though). I don't blame you for not wanting to go on the hot sand! :)

    1. Thank you, Debbie. Gardener M has been tending to my garden for the past 30+ years; it's almost more his garden than mine! :D

  7. I like that new aloe. I have an aloe vera that I keep as a houseplant. I don't much like it and have never used it on my skin but there it is! Last week I repotted it, cleaned the leaves and cut off a couple of tatty ones. Maybe it will come in handy one day!
Show us your new clothes when you get them.

    1. It's a very striking looking plant, isn't it? To be honest, I haven't use the aloe vera plant, myself, but, when neighbor S's daughter got a sunburn, last summer, she asked if she could have some leaves to apply to soothe the sunburn and I was happy to oblige. I should keep a plant in the kitchen for when I burn myself when cooking (happens quite often because I am a careless cook).
      Will do! :D
Glad to know that you speak Italian - I used an online translating service to see what the comment said. I only know two languages fluently enough to speak.
By the way, I put in a request for the book you reviewed (The Woman in the White Kimono). Waiting for the library to let me know when it arrives at the local library branch. I'm looking forward to reading it. Daughter wasn't able to find it in her nearby library, which a small branch library, but, she is planning a trip to the main Berkeley library to see if they have it. :)

    2. That's three of you! Now I'm worried that I oversold the book! 😬 It's a good story and an easy read, with some interesting historical and geographical context, but I wouldn't say it was life-changing or anything like that. Let me know what you think (and feel free to disagree!)

    3. I don't think you oversold the book. It just sounded like something I'd enjoy reading and I though my daughter would like it, too. She joined the library's summer reading program and checked out three books to read, this past weekend. I haven't borrowed any books from the library since the lockdown; I finally feel it should be OK to go in for a few minutes to collect a book they've put on hold for me. :)

  8. The flowers look lovely. I do hope Dancer is feeling better.

It's lovely that you're able to connect with family and chat with them! Do you have a lot of family still living in Sri Lanka?

  9. You have been lucky with your garden harvests so far, this year. Those tomatoes look delicious.
I hope Dancer responds well to his increased dose of medication. Xx

    1. Yes, the harvest has been good, so far, this year. I picked another two tomatoes, this morning. :)
I'm still waiting to hear from the pharmacy - with Tuesday being a holiday, I think they are behind with their orders. But, yes, hopefully, he'll respond well to his new dosage. :)

  10. Beautiful red roses. And is that a gladiola? M brought you a couple of nice new little plants. And he is right! Your aloes do thrive.
What a beautiful harvest. So many tomatoes too. Mine are little babies. I have 4 different plants in this year. I have been planting 3 the last few years but thought I'd do a Roma tomato this year as well.
You had a very sociable start to the new month staying in touch with so many people :)

    1. Thank you, Debra. Yes, that is a gladiola.
The tomatoes are Early Girl tomatoes; this year, I decided against buying a Roma tomato plant and bought two Early Girl ones, instead. But, yesterday, M and I planted some other tomato seeds that I had - not sure if anything will actually grow because they were really old seeds.
It has been a good start to the month where keeping in touch with friends and family is concerned. :)
