In the winter, I like to use flannel sheets on the beds. I have one set of flannel sheets for my daughter's bed and one set for my bed, which, after several years of use, had started to tear. I wrote about mending my sheets, fitted sheet and flat sheet, back in March and April of 2019. At the time, I was hoping to get at least another winter's use out of them. I used them in the winter of 2019/20 and again in 2020/21. I haven't used them yet, this winter, but, I know that they have developed a couple of additional holes. In the meantime, my daughter has been using her flannel sheets and they, too, have become rather threadbare with several worn spots.
So, in December 2021, I decided to splurge a bit and had daughter order us a new set of flannel sheets, each, from a store. They were delivered shortly after Christmas and I opened them a few days later, with the idea of washing them and then, putting them on our beds for the New Year.
But, apparently, the new sheets come already torn? At least, the fitted sheet in the set we bought for daughter's bed came pre-torn! Ha, ha, maybe this is a new trend? Like those jeans that come pre-ripped?
I said I could mend the new sheets; my daughter thought we shouldn't have to mend brand new sheets after we paid good money for them (even if they had been on sale). She contacted the store to return the sheets and sent them the above photos I had taken. We had the option of requesting a replacement set of sheets or getting a refund. Since my daughter is returning to her apartment in the near future, we figured we could manage with the sheet set she currently has (I'll mend them) and requested a refund. We were expecting to return the torn sheet set, either by mail or do a store drop off, BUT, the store didn't want them back! We were instructed to keep, donate, or dispose of them! Well, then, I guess we will keep them! I will mend the tear on the new sheet, instead, and dispose of the old, worn out one (or turn it into dusting cloths!)
The sheet set that I bought for my bed seemed fine; I have them in the washer, as I type this. I will mend daughter's new sheet before I wash it.
Today, I am resting from yesterday's activities. I didn't think I overdid things, but, I guess I must have, because my leg feels a bit sore, today. It is the right leg, this time, but, I don't want another sciatica flare up, so I am resting! Daughter, on the other hand, is working. She made me a smoothie for brunch (frozen bananas, mixed frozen berries, a handful of spinach leaves, fruit juice, and a splash of milk); we will have leftovers that are in the fridge for dinner.
Today, I am grateful for:
- New bed sheets
- The store's generous return policy!
- Working appliances
- Leftovers
- Being able to take it easy and rest as needed

Today's joyful activity is resting!
Plans for tomorrow include going for my mammogram in the afternoon and having M tend to the garden in the evening.
How is your Thursday? What are your plans for Friday?
I am catching up on blog reading. I hope you do not get another sciatica flare up! You surely worked very hard on the almsgiving, so rest now. As I read your post from yesterday, I thought how special the almsgiving was. I imagine it was so lovely that the monk blessed your home with a rose from your garden! Rose water! I'm sorry your daughter will need to leave soon. She's been such a big help to you and such comfort. I am at my sister's home now, we had a lovely memorial service for her, and it brought me much comfort. My brother and other sister came. Family is precious. I hope your daughter will be able to visit you often. My best to you, Celie.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Celie; the almsgiving was very special to me. I am sure your sister's memorial service was also very special to you and your family. I'm glad your siblings were able to join you and I'm sure your late sister's daughter appreciated her aunts and uncle being there for her. You are right; family is precious. I am going to miss my daughter when she leaves, but, I'm grateful that I was able to spend a whole year with her (she was originally intending to stay for only 3 months). :)
DeleteResting is a good plan! I had a headache and was cold so I rested with a good book for a good part of the afternoon !
ReplyDeleteHope your headache went away. I don't think I could have read with a headache. :)
DeleteI also hope you do not have another flare.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you did a lot of work getting everything together, so rest, read, enjoy someone else tending to you a little!
Thank you, Anne. The resting helped and my leg feels better, today. I was well enough to drive myself to my appointment and back (the right leg being my "driving" leg). I am continuing to take it easy, today.
DeleteI hope you don't have another sciatica flare up, do rest and take it easy. I take it you had your refund and keeping the sheets is a bonus. I had similar here yesterday but just a carton of milk that was leaking. The delivery driver told us to keep it and gave us a refund and said the store would only throw it away so I dispensed it into a jug :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Eileen; I was able to rest and the leg is much better, today. I don't like sciatica flare ups! Yes, the store refunded us the price of the sheets and we get to keep the damaged set! I will patch it and use it. I'm glad you were able to decant the milk from the leaky carton. :)
DeleteUnbelievable that the sheets arrived torn. But it is nice that the customer service genuinely made it right, as so often that is not the case. Oh do take care, overdoing it can escalate problems quickly if you don't take time to recoup. Besides the weekend is coming up. ;-)
ReplyDeleteIt seemed very ironic that the new sheets I ordered to replace my torn sheets arrived already torn, themselves! :D But, the store took care of it and now, I have a free set of torn sheets, which I will somehow mend and use. :)
DeleteI am resting and taking it easy, as I don't want to get another sciatica flare up. I felt much better, today, and went for my medical appointment. Continuing to take it easy, this evening, too. :)
Oh that is a funny sheet story and an even funnier blog title. lol
ReplyDeleteThat seems to be the way now - getting a refund but not needing to return the item.
Not always but often.
Last Christmas I ordered a new pot for myself from Santa and when it came I wasn't happy with it. I contacted the store to initiate a return. Even if I had to pay shipping it was worth returning as the pot was expensive.
They issued me an immediate credit and said I didn't need to return it.
I was stunned. It was an $80 pot!
I passed it on to a friend who loves it and uses it often.
Speaking of pots, I don't think I commented on your saying your daughter gave you new pots for Christmas. Such a nice gift.
Are your old pots soon to be on your decluttered list?
Glad you liked the blog title! :D
DeleteI suppose it is easier for the stores to tell the customers to keep the item rather than arrange for returns and having their staff process or dispose of the items, themselves. I'm glad you were able to pass the pot along to a friend. Yes, the plan is to go through my old pots and pans and declutter. The new pots are a different design (deeper than wide) and stainless steel, supposed to be oven safe and dishwasher safe (although, they warn that the shiny finish might be damaged in the dishwasher).
The new sheets look pretty but with a rip? I think if they sell them reduced they should at least warn that they might be torn! However it sounds like you won out as you have the good set and a set that can be repaired while you still got the refund!
ReplyDeleteI do hope your leg gets better.
I had a lovely surprise in the mailbox. A friend sent me a beautiful little Christmas wall hanging that she had made herself! I couldn't wait to get onto my e-mail to thank her.
We were very disappointed to find one of the new sheets already torn! But, it worked out well - we received a refund on the ripped set and got to keep them, anyway. So, we received a queen sheet set and a twin set for the price of the queen set. I will repair the torn set and use it. :)
DeleteOh, what a lovely surprise gift from your friend! I'm sure that wall hanging will be making an appearance every Christmas from now on! :)
Wow - I agree that you shouldn't have to mend new sheets! I think a lot of places tend to do that now. I ended up with a duplicate lego set that I asked to return - I got my money back and was told to keep the lego set. We are going to give it to the children of one of my husband's work friends.
ReplyDeleteI think the stores find it easier (or, maybe cheaper) to just refund the money and have the customers dispose of the goods than hire people to process the returned items! It's good that you are able to pass the extra set of Legos to a child who will no doubt enjoy them. :)
DeleteIt must have been disappointing when they arrived with small tears, but at least you were refunded. I also use brushed cotton sheets in the winter months, they are so cosy. X
ReplyDeleteIt was disappointing, Jules, and that's what my daughter wrote in her comment to the store, when she was looking to return them. But, I am happy to receive the refund and happy to mend the "free" damaged sheet! :D
DeleteLove the title of the post, at least they were pretorn what I hate is when you get a new item and after a week or two of use the they come apart, it is harder to get a refund then. I suspect a lot of stores just dont want the bother of dealing with returns.
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked the post title, Sharon. Yes, easier to return/get a refund when the item is new and unused; harder to do so after use. It probably costs more for the store to accept returns and pay staff to dispose of them. :)
DeleteOh I definitely agree with daughter that you shouldn't have to accept damaged goods! Glad you spoke up and were properly compensated. The sheets will feel especially cosy, knowing they were free!
ReplyDeleteAll credit goes to my daughter for contacting the store and informing them of the torn sheets. But, you are right - the new patched sheets will be nice, knowing they were free! :D
DeleteYou educated me today. I didn't know about the torn sheet trend to match the torn blue jean trend. :)
ReplyDeleteHa, ha, we are trend-setters over here on the West Coast! :D
