Avocado Flower?

M told me that there was a flower on the avocado plant when he tended to the garden on Friday.  Today, I took a photo of it, but, I'm not sure if that is a flower or a new set of leaves!  In my experience, avocado flowers form at the end of the branch in a panicle, not at the base of a leaf!  We shall be watching this "flower" to see if, indeed, it is a flower!

A partly cloudy, partly sunny day, today.  I spent a relaxed morning, replying to blog comments, reading and commenting on a few blogs, and easing into the day.

There was an issue with the pharmacy, which texted to let me know that one of my medications was ready for pick up.  When I called them to ask them to mail my prescription (something they had been doing, free of charge, since the pandemic began), I was told that they are no longer authorized to do so!  I offered to pay for delivery, but, the pharmacy staff I spoke with said they are not allowed to mail prescriptions, anymore!  Apparently I have to go in person and sign for the medication!  They said that their policy was that a signature was required for prescriptions, but, that policy was waived during the pandemic, but, now, the policy has been reinstated!  Even though the pandemic is still raging on, with our county's new COVID cases number being 45,584, yesterday and 43,582, today?  Yes, even so.  Sigh.  My daughter doesn't want me to go into the pharmacy to pick up my medication (I have 6 of the factors that put me in a high risk group for severe complications from COVID).   My insurance company had sent me a new prescription card at the beginning of the year, saying if I wanted my prescriptions to be mailed, then, I needed to use the mail order pharmacy listed in their letter.  I had been hoping to avoid switching pharmacies, but, that's what I have to do.  We called the insurance company and was informed what we need to do.  So, tomorrow, I have to call my old pharmacy and ask them to contact the new pharmacy to do a pharmacy to pharmacy transfer of all my prescriptions.  I hope they can do that over the phone!

In the afternoon, I sorted through some paperwork and refreshed my "grab and go" earthquake kit.  The box of granola bars I had in there had passed its 'best by' date by several months, so I put in a packet of crackers, instead.  And I took out the two old bottles of water and put in two newer bottles.  I don't believe that bottled water expires although the bottles come with an expiry date, but, I do believe the taste of the water changes.  This bag of earthquake supplies is kept by my bed, along with the spare bottles of my medications and a pair of shoes and socks.  Next, I checked the batteries in the flashlight (torch) I keep by my pillow!  If an earthquake happens at night and is severe enough to knock out the power, then, a working flashlight is a good thing to have!

Later, I took the trash can and yard waste bin to the curb for pick up in the morning.  Then, I took the kitchen waste to the compost bin and watered the vegetable plants and the citrus trees in the back yard.  M will water the rest of the yard on Wednesday.  I also picked a lemon that had fallen from the tree and picked the first two oranges of the season!  My daughter and I enjoyed the oranges:

First Orange of the Season

I didn't take down the Christmas tree decorations, today, because the bin in which I store the decorations is in the garage and I forgot to bring it inside!  So, that's on the agenda for tomorrow!

Instead, I changed my bed sheets, remaking the bed with the new set of flannel sheets I had bought and washing the sheets that were on the bed.  They need to be folded and put away.

I also made a pot of tomato soup, with some of the garden tomatoes that I had frozen.  I added a couple of carrots, some onions, a little bell pepper (also from the garden), some zucchini (yes, from the garden) and a can of cut green beans which needed using up.  Once cooked, I blended everything and it turned into a big pot of soup!  There will be plenty for lunches this week and I might even freeze some for another day!

Daughter took a little of the soup (in lieu of canned diced tomatoes) to add to the ground beef mixture (seasoned ground beef, bell pepper, black beans, and corn) she made for the "burrito bowl" that was her dinner, with quinoa, baked sweet potatoes, and avocado:

Daughter's "Burrito Bowl"

I had a bowl of my tomato soup and later, a bowl of quinoa with some of her ground beef mixture.  It was a good dinner!

Today, I called Aunt C and chatted with her for a bit; later, I called friend R.  I also received a New Year's card from my oldest half-brother in Sri Lanka.  He had not mentioned if he had received my card or not, but, he had given his card to his daughter who had visited him over the winter holidays, and she had posted it to me upon her return.  I was happy to hear from him.

Today, I am grateful for:

- Having medical insurance
- Daughter helping me with calling the insurance company to ask about how I go about switching pharmacies
- Helpful customer service reps
- Fresh oranges from the garden
- Daughter cooking part of the dinner

Today's joyful activity was spending time in the garden.

Plans for tomorrow include undecorating the Christmas tree, since I didn't do it, today!

How was your Monday?  What are your plans for Tuesday?

  1. What a nuisance for you having to change pharmacies. I am very grateful we have our medicines delivered without having to visit the chemist shop. It usually goes well although yesterday they didn't send hubby's fridge item but a quick phone call and all was sorted and they will bring it today. As you say with Covid cases being so high the change needing you to visit and sign for your medicines makes no sense at all. I hope doing the transfer over the phone goes well for you.

    1. That's just what it is, Eileen, a nuisance! I'm glad your medicines are being delivered to you without having to go to the chemist's. Thank you; I have been procrastinating on making the phone call to the pharmacy! :D

  2. You make amazing food. What a nuisance about the pharmacy. Things are so scary, you don't know what to do for the best. I'm glad that you're staying safe.

    1. Thank you, Lyssa. It is a nuisance about the pharmacy. For the longest time, I resisted getting mail delivery of medications because I enjoyed interacting with the pharmacy personnel (became friends with a couple of them and others know me by name, etc.) But, now, with COVID, I need to have the medications delivered to me, because I am not willing to go out and about that much.

  3. In my experience, it is easy to switch prescriptions from one pharmacy to another. They do it electronically. Hopefully, that will work out for you. However, with worker shortages because of COVID around here, our pharmacies are severely understaffed. I usually use a drive through, but that has been closed for a while.

    1. That's encouraging to hear, June, that it has been easy to switch. I am still trying to get through to the pharmacy! No one is answering the phone!

  4. Sounds like you had a VERY busy day... So far this morning I've finished the laundry I began yesterday. Went outside and took care of the chickens. Gave out medicine to the dogs who need it, washed dishes, made some broccoli to add to the dogs dinner, put away clean sheets, cleaned up the kitchen and now I am sitting down visiting some blogs. I'd love to get outside for a bit but it's cold today and the wind just makes it colder.. Maybe tomorrow.. I have to get working on cleaning up lasts years garden.

    1. Hi Robyn, so nice to hear from you, again! Sounds like you've had a very busy day, yourself! I hope it warms up enough for you to go outside for a little bit. Take care.

  5. I changed to using one of the NHS approved online pharmacies just before the first lockdown. I was dubious at first but I've never had any problems with the added benefit that I didn't have to venture out during these difficult times just to collect essential medication. I hope your system works just as well for you.

At least an earthquake kit isn't something we need to worry about maintaining over here. It did make me wonder though ... apart from your grab and go bag do you keep your other earthquake supplies all together in one place or are they split between numerous places in your home to minimise the risk of losing it all? Is this something that your daughter has to do where she lives or is it just in LA? Fingers are crossed that you never need to use it!

    1. I resisted switching to mail order deliveries before the pandemic, but, when my pharmacy offered the mail delivery service during the pandemic, I was happy to take advantage of it. I wouldn't mind going into the pharmacy if our new COVID numbers weren't quite what they are, currently. But, they are higher now than at any time previously!

Ideally, one would keep all ones earthquake supplies in one designated place, but, I don't! Mine are scattered all over the house! Cans of food in the kitchen and in the spare room. Bottles of water in the dining room and in the spare room. Extra toilet paper/paper towels in the spare room (which is really a stock room, at this stage)! My daughter lives in Berkeley which sits right on top of a known earthquake fault line (Hayward Fault); she has her earthquake supplies stashed under her bed in her apartment! The whole of California is prone to earthquakes, and we all live in dread of the "Big One"!

  6. Yes, that sounds like an unnecessary fuss from the pharmacy. I hope that you can switch easily and that the new one will be efficient and friendly. (Hey, maybe when you say you are switching, they will find aanother policy written on the other side of the page!!)

The avocado plant is interesting - keep us informed!

And sleep well tonight in your new sheets, safe in the knowledge that the earthquake box and torch are up to date. I was always a little startled when I visited mainland Japan and saw the array of stuff we needed to keep by our bedsides! But important to be prepared.

    1. Even the pharmacy staff I spoke with sounded unhappy with the new change, requiring people to come in, because it exposes them to more people, even if they are behind a plexiglass shield and masked. I tried calling them to switch, today, but, haven't been successful in getting through to the pharmacy! Will keep trying.
Will certainly keep you informed about the avocado!
I slept well, thank you. :) I think they are much more prepared in Japan than we are over here, but, I try my best to be at least somewhat prepared!

  7. An avocado flower! I don't think I've seen one before. :)

I hope switching to a new pharmacy goes well, Bless.

    1. Nil, to be quite honest, I don't think it is a flower, at all! I think it is a new set of leaves, forming a new branch! I think avocado flowers form in a cluster at the end of the branch, just like mango flowers do. Besides, M pruned the tips of the branches as the leaves got damaged on those couple of really cold nights we had.

Switching to the new pharmacy took some doing, but, I think it is done, now. The current pharmacy wasn't very helpful!

  8. What a pity you have bother with the pharmacy. It is quite ridiculous to expect you to go in person when the pandemic is raging. I hope the arrangements to change pharmacies go smoothly and that it turns out to be a good pharmacy for you as well.
That avocado "flower" has a nice avocado colour to it. I wonder if it is a flower?

I just got an e-mail from the local drug store inviting me to book appointments for the booster shot we registered for. I'm so glad as we had decided not to try to speed things up by driving 30 miles to a clinic.

    1. I was not very happy about having to change pharmacies, but, it is done, now. In the end, my daughter had to go in to collect the one prescription that was ready, just so I had enough on hand until everything gets straightened out.

I don't think it is a flower, at all! I think it a cluster of new leaves as a branch is trying to grow out from the base of the leaf, after the tips of the branches were pruned! All the avocado flowers I've seen have formed in clusters at the end of the branch! But, M thought it was a flower and he's the gardener! I'm just the crazy woman who puts fruit pits to sprout and expects them to grow! :D

Yay! You can book an appointment at the local drug store for your booster and not have to drive far! Hope you get an appointment, soon. :)

  9. That is really irritating about the pharmacy. Even if the numbers weren't high (but they are ridiculously so) why could they not continue doing something that has been okay for this long?

I really enjoy seeing the photos of your food. The buttito dish looks delicious!

    Yum - oranges!

    1. They (pharmacy_ obviously don't believe in the saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"! The delivery by mail was working very well. Then, suddenly, they are no longer delivering! I suppose not enough people were coming into the store and buying other things while waiting to pick up their medications?

Thank you; glad you enjoy the food pictures. If you omit the ground beef and did a medley of sauteed vegetables, that might be a good vegetarian option for you?

We had two more oranges from the tree, today. :)

  10. It is nice that you heard from family. Let us know if you find the avocado flowers. I have two pits rooting right now and another to put into water tomorrow. More don't root than do, but I try with each pit.

  11. The picture is of an avocado flower but the male flower, the tree has both male and female flowers, so you are both right, lol. You won’t get from that flower only fruits from the female flower at the end of branches.
What a nuisance about the chemist, we have delivery here, but I am thinking of moving to online as you can buy all the other stuff online that the chemist sell, but if you don’t go in…. I envy you for the oranges they grow better up north, here they tend to be small and sour, although lemons, grapefruit and mandarins grow well. I have a good crop of apples plums feijoias are coming on plus blackberries the thornless type is form lots of fruit.
That burrito bowl looks so yummy,
My plans for today changed last night I decided for various reasons to take part in my church’s 10 days of prayer, we meet for 1 hour for 10 days and are praying for the world, peace, and all those who are struggling with how the world is at the moment. We are all masked and 2 meters apart, it’s a small group so I feel safe, we don’t have COVID in my part of the world and there were only 19 cases up north. We are so lucky but we are becoming a hermit nation, but I am good with that,

    1. Sharon, thank you so much for educating me about the avocado flowers!

Sounds like you have plenty of fruit growing in your garden! :)

The 10 days of prayer meetings sound like a lovely thing to do! The world is much in need of prayers right now! It's wonderful that you can gather, safely, due to lack of or very low numbers of COVID! I admire the fact that steps were taken in time to keep the virus away from your shores! Long may your part of the world continue to be COVID-free!

  12. I am not sure if my previous comment went through and it was a long comment, basically that is a male flower as the avocado has male and female so you both are right that flower won’t produce fruit as you are right fruit is at the end of branches.
Nuisance about the chemist but online would be good, can you buy othe pharmacy goods online or do you still have to go in for other stuff. I have mine delivered but will switch to online as I can get other stuff as well from the same online company.
That burrito looks so yummy, you are going to miss your daughter so much!
I am doing a 10 days of prayer at my church, for the world to heal. So I have to go out for an hour everyday, there is zoom link, but I feel I need some human contact as I have been isolated a lot. As our numbers are so low 19 yesterday for the whole country and none at all for region for over a year I feel I can venture out. It is all socially distanced and we are all masked and no more than 20 can attend. NZ is fast becoming a hermit nation no one can enter and if you leave it is hard to get back in. But I am good with that, we have only had 60 deaths since the beginning.

    1. Both your comments got through, Sharon, as you can see. :)

Yes, I can buy other items at the pharmacy or get new prescriptions sent there as long as I pick them up in person. The other pharmacy is only for home delivery of prescriptions.

I am definitely going to miss my daughter when she goes back and she says she'll be homesick, too!

I think attending the 10 day prayer event in person sounds reasonable, given the lack of COVID in your area and the safety protocols you'll be following. That human contact is such an important part of our wellbeing, isn't it? Enjoy the company of others and continue to be safe. :)

  13. We were gifted some flannel sheets a few years and I just could not sleep comfortably with them on. They were just too hot for me. So after the winter was over I got rid of them. But I know a lot of people love them in the winter. Too bad you had to switch pharmacies. Was a drive-thru pick up not an option? I have a prescription I need to pick up on Friday so I will be going through their drive-thru. It's less contact than going into the store and very convenient. Denise

    1. Denise, you'd laugh if you saw the number of quilts and blankets I have piled up on my bed! The new flannel sheets were very comfy and cozy! :)
The particular branch of the pharmacy I go to doesn't have a drive-through option. They might have a different location where there might have been a drive-through, but, it wouldn't have been quite as convenient as having the medications mailed to my house. Anyway, I made the switch, today, and now, I keep my fingers crossed that it all works the way it is supposed to work! :D

  14. It's so smart to keep your emergency bag ready to go making sure things are fresh, exchanging your food and checking batteries. I find posts like this valuable, as I'm sure other readers do. It might remind us to think about our own situations. As we know from the news unfortunately devastating things can and do happen without any notice at all.

It's gotten quite cold here so yesterday I spent some time winterizing. You would think I'd be out of ideas by now lol
Back in the fall I found a brand new unopened bag of quilt batting for $3.99 at a thrift shop. Yesterday I cut panels (larger than the curtains) and pinned the batting to the curtains in the upstairs bathroom and bedrooms. You know how the batting sort of sticks to the fabric? That was a real bonus & it worked out great. With the excess inch or so all around they tuck in nicely into the window frame and really protect against drafts. The curtains can still be opened and in the spring I will just unpin the batting panels and label them for next year.

The tomato soup sounds really good with all your fresh ingredients.
And who doesn't love a burrito bowl?!
I am anxious to see if that's an avocado flower:)

    1. Thank you, Debra. I don't always remember to check my emergency bag, but, I try to do so every 3-4 months.

I like your idea to use quilt batting to line your curtains! I'm sure that will help keep your rooms warmer.

The tomato soup is a good way to make sure I get some veggies in me! :) Besides, it made a little room in the freezer, since I took out 2 quart sized bags of tomatoes and a smaller bag of zucchini! :D Daughter's burrito bowl was quite tasty!

I read up on avocado flowers and apparently, depending on the species, flowers open up the first day as male flowers and open up the next day as female flowers, while in other species, flowers open up as female and then, reopen as male! So, they don't self-pollinate, but, depend on insects, mainly bees, to pollinate them, although, in some areas, a little wind pollination can also take place! One of my neighbors at the back (one house over) has two avocado trees in his back yard, so, maybe I'll move my plant closer to his trees and we might get some wind pollination going on, too! I feel like I am match-making! :D
