It was sunny and clear, today, after yesterday's rain. It was a bit cool, but, the air smelled so fresh! I bundled up and walked up and down my driveway for a few minutes, and then, realized I didn't have my cell phone with me (to call anyone in case I fell!), so went indoors and decided to prepare brunch! Leftovers to the rescue, once again, disguised as fried rice! The last sausage from the package I cooked the other day (the package contained five sausages) cut up into small pieces, leftover rice, leftover green peas, an egg, and a pinch of chili powder: it made a very filling meal and very economical, too!
M tended to the garden in the early evening. He bought me a six pack of broccoli seedlings, a pack of beetroot seedlings, and a passionfruit vine! The passionfruit cuttings that neighbor S's daughter N gave me didn't root and turned moldy! I had to toss them! But, M informed me that he had seen passionfruit plants for sale and asked me if he should buy me one and I said yes, please, and I will reimburse him. The passionfruit plant cost $20 and with the other seedlings, the bill came to $26.01. The passionfruit vine will remain in its pot for now and we will plant it in the spring. Hopefully, there will be passionfruit for eating, next year!
M also brought me a pot of rose flavored yogurt to try! He said he had been at the market, today, and someone was offering samples of a new brand of French yogurt for shoppers to try. He said he tried a couple of different ones, including orange blossom flavored, which he found to be too perfume-y, and he thought the rose flavored one was good. When he told that to the person handing out the samples, she had given him several small pots of the rose flavored yogurt, free of charge, because, apparently, he was the only one who was even willing to try them! He knew that I use rose flavoring for some of my food (he remembers that I made rose petal jelly back when I had all those rose bushes) and offered me one of the pots (a reusable blue painted terracotta pot!). I tried it and I thought it tasted very good. My daughter, who doesn't like yogurt, tried it, too, and said it was OK. LOL. I looked up the brand online and apparently, the grocery store is selling them for $4.49 each! I am glad I was given the opportunity to try it, but, I will not buy them for that price!
I spent the rest of the evening crocheting and watching some programs on TV.
I had planned to cook a ham and noodle casserole for dinner, but, I didn't feel like cooking tonight. Instead, I made ham sandwiches for dinner! With fresh pears for dessert. I will make the casserole with the rest of the packet of ham for dinner, tomorrow.
Today, I am grateful for:
- The sunny day
- M buying the passionfruit plant and vegetable seedlings for me
- M planting the seedlings and tidying the garden
- M bringing me a new yogurt to try
- A working heater
Today's joyful activity was crocheting.
Plans for the weekend include ordering and picking up some groceries and maybe making a cake!
How was your Friday? What are your plans for the weekend? Have you ever tried rose flavored yogurt? Do you think you might try some, if offered a sample?
Leftover meals are the best! I'll be cooking extra when I cook my Christmas meal on Christmas Eve so that there's plenty left over for foodie creations on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
ReplyDeleteThat was nice of M to think of you and bring the rose flavoured yoghurt. Just as well there were free samples as that sounds expensive!
The broccoli and passionfruit plants are useful additions to your garden so hope they all do well for you. How long before you get your first passionfruit?
I like your plans to cook extra for on Christmas Eve. :) I will probably make chicken curry and rice with green beans and a couple of other vegetables for sides; it's what my daughter has requested! :)
DeleteThe yogurt that M brought is expensive! They have some very interesting flavors (mango and passionfruit, orange blossom and honey, for example), but, you can buy a fairly well-known brand of yogurt for less than $1 per cup.
The passionfruit plant M bought already has 4 small fruits growing on it! So, if I can keep it alive through the colder months, we might get some fruits in the spring, perhaps? I anticipate some new flowers in spring. :)
That rose flavoured yogurt is certainly expensive, but I'm wondering, now that you have enjoyed the freebee, you might be able to add some rosewater to plain yogurt and find it acceptable and more affordable?
ReplyDeleteA dirty day here today, dull, above zero (snow melting, yay), and I had a nap after breakfast. My new medication does say something about being drowsy!
We think alike, Bushlady! Only, I was thinking, that, the next time I make a batch of yogurt, I might add a drop of rose flavor (bought a new bottle for the love cake we are planning to make) to the batch! But, adding the rose flavor to purchased plain yogurt is an option, too! :)
DeleteI'm glad you were able to get in a nap! I did something similar, today, myself! Woke up, fed the cats, etc., and went back to sleep! :D
That was nice of him to bring one for you to try. I'm not sure about rose petal yoghurt. It does sound a little perfume-y. I'm more of a fruit yoghurt person. I don't like the ones that are chocolate or coffee either. I might give it a try though.
ReplyDeleteIt was very kind of him to do so, Sharon. I grew up with rose flavoring as we used it in desserts and in drinks, so I am used to it. I've tried one chocolate yogurt (a whipped kind, which was interesting), but, I haven't tried any coffee flavored ones. :)
DeleteIt will be interesting to see how well the passion fruit plant grows. I hope it bears some fruit for you next year.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I would like rose flavoured yoghurt but I would be willing to give it a try. X
I hope the passionfruit plant will grow! I need to water it, today!
DeleteRose flavoring is something I grew up with, so, I liked the yogurt. It's good that you are willing to give it a try; that's all one could ask! :)
The rose flavoured yogurt sounds interesting but expensive. I'd be willing to try any new flavoured yogurt as I have one most days after my mid-day snack. Tilly has taken to licking the empty pot clean and then I have to give her a Dentastix to clean her teeth :) A shame the passionfruit cutting didn't root so fingers crossed the new plant does well.
ReplyDeleteThat particular brand of yogurt seems to be very expensive! But, they do seem to have some interesting flavors. I used to eat more yogurt, at one time, but, recently, I haven't had that many. That's kind of you to share your yogurt with Tilly. :) I used to have a cat that liked to share my cup of tea! I had to pour a little to a saucer for her! :D I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the passionfruit plant will grow!
DeleteI've never used rosewater for cooking - or for anything else. I'm not sure about yogurt, but it does sound good in a cake.
ReplyDeleteIt will be very good in a cake! Or, cookies. I have bottles of rose water (for cooking, desserts), rose syrup (for drinks), and rose essence (stronger than rose water for cakes) in my kitchen cabinets. :)
DeleteYou are planting quite a few things - how lucky you are to live in your climate that allows for year round growing of vegetables.
ReplyDeleteI think you will be glad you bought the potted passion vine. Hopefully it will bring you a lifetime of fruit.
Peas, broccoli, beets, and the mustard greens (plus the one chard plant that continues to grow!) - I think I'll have a good variety of cool weather vegetables. Not sure if I want to grow carrots, too, but, I still have some radish seeds from last year, which will be planted, too - I must remind M about them.
DeleteThe poor passionfruit vine fell over, twice, yesterday, but, I've propped it up in a corner and wedged it in so it won't fall over, again!
