Friday Update

Friday's Garden Harvest

Last night was a good night.  I was able to sleep, pain free, all night and well into the morning!  What a blessing!  I was ready for bed by 11:00 p.m. and asleep a little after 11:30 p.m.  I woke up once when my daughter was going to sleep around 1:00 a.m. and I remember asking for a couple of crackers which I ate.  Then, I slept until the alarm went off at 6:00 a.m. to take my medication - another couple of crackers with the pill and I slept again until after 10:00 a.m.

I had my lab work appointment scheduled for 1:15 p.m., so daughter took a couple of hours off in the afternoon to take me.  The waiting room was full and lots of people were complaining that they had been waiting longer than their appointed times.  I had to wait 45 minutes, myself, before I was called in at 2:00 p.m., but, I was fine with that.  I wasn't in any pain and I didn't want to reschedule the appointment.  The tests didn't take too long and I was home by 3:00 p.m.  It cost $3.00 to park at the clinic, today (based on how long you were parked).

It was a sunny and breezy day, with the temperature in the low to mid 70s (72F at 1:00 p.m. and 75F at 3:00 p.m.).  I was comfortable in a short-sleeved blouse and didn't need to wear a coat or a jacket.  However, I carried a cardigan with me because I know that the waiting room can be cold and I had it on while I waited.

Daughter made us both a salad for lunch after we got home and, later, because I was still feeling a little hungry, she warmed up some squash soup that we had bought from the grocery store.  A little too sweet for my liking, but, it was good.  She cooked a chicken curry, last night, for dinner, along with curried green beans and rice, served with dhal (lentils) from the freezer and peach chutney, as well.  We will have leftovers from that for our dinner, tonight.

M stopped by in late afternoon/early evening, to prop up the peach tree and water the garden for me.  He picked the carrots we had planted because they were starting to bolt!

Carrots, a Peach, and a Broccoli Side Shoot

I told daughter to save the carrot tops to add to a stir-fry or something.

Apparently, there is a zucchini in the works, too, that will be ready for harvesting in a few days!  I will have to ask my daughter if she can take a picture of it for me.

I have been resting in bed and relaxing after I returned home from the lab tests.  I am not in pain so that is a blessing.  No big plans for the rest of the evening - I might catch up on blogs and play some online games.

Today, I am grateful for:
- A pain-free night of sleep, last night
- A pain-free day, today
- Getting the lab tests done
- Daughter being able to take me to the clinic and back
- The garden harvest!

Today's joyful activity was going to the clinic and back!

How was your Friday?  Any plans for the weekend?

  1. I'm glad you're taking things easy and that you made it to your appointment okay. I hope you will get your results quickly.
Fresh, home grown vegetables always look so tempting. I'm beginning to wish I had planted at least some in my garden now. I suppose I've still got the strawberries to look forward to, and Lily has her beans and peas. X

    1. Thank you, Jules. The results should be available when I go to see the doctor on Tuesday; I shall find out, then.

The homegrown vegetables make me feel very happy! Perhaps it's not too late for you to tuck in a couple of tomato plants into your garden? Although, the strawberries and Lily's beans and peas will be something lovely to look forward to. I'm thinking more and more in terms of edible landscaping, these days. :)

  2. A pain free 24 hours sounds like a step in the right direction. Was this the lab tests you needed for when you see your doctor on Tuesday? If so, I hope the results provide a clear indication of the cause of the pain, even if only by eliminating possibilities.

Your daughter is doing such a great job of caring for you ... I'm sure you are being a very good patient for her, but I do hope the doctor can identify the cause straight away so the two of you can enjoy the rest of your time together before she has to return to her own home.

    1. It was wonderful to be pain free for the night and day and last night was another pain free night! I am hoping this means that things will continue to get better.

Yes, yesterday's lab tests are the ones the doctor wanted for Tuesday's visit. It will be similar to an annual physical exam, as well, since I didn't have one last year (her clinic was closed during Covid). I do hope she will be tell me what might have caused the sciatica to flare up and what I can do to overcome it.

I am very grateful to my daughter for how well she's taking care of me. But, I am really hoping that I will be able to function on my own, without her help, well before she has to go back. I would really like to resume some of my household activities, like watering the garden and cooking meals! Although, perhaps, this is the year when she'll take over making the peach chutney!

  4. I’m so glad you had a pain free night, Bless.

Yesterday I organized the office room. Shredded a stack of papers from the last semester, and filed others. I also completed a granny rectangle placemat.

Hope you and your daughter have a relaxing weekend. 😊

    1. Thank you, Nil. We really don't appreciate a good night's sleep until we stop having them!

Sounds like you had a very productive day! I used a bag of paper I had shredded as mulch in one of my flower beds, before all this sciatica stuff started - I thought it was a very good use for it. :) I like the sound of that granny rectangle placemat!

We are planning to take it easy, this weekend. Hope you are having a good weekend, yourself.

  5. So glad you got to and from your appointment without mishap. And the latest harvest looks good!

The weather/extra layers report is much appreciated (and made me laugh). Nice of you to make me laugh when you aren't feeling that great yourself 😆

PS. Rain and sun here again today. I went out with a sweatshirt and raincoat. It was too hot when the sun came out, but glad I had it or I'd've got cold and wet. Average temp. 10°C.

    1. Thank you, Lady Ella, and I am so glad that I made you laugh. :D I'm glad you had a raincoat to keep you dry. 10C (=50F) would be cold for me! I'd definitely want a coat! :)

I hope you have a relatively warm and dry weekend with some sunshine and more laughter.

  6. Oh good - I'm happy that you were able to get a good night's sleep.
I hope you are able to string a few pain-free nights together.

I went to a few yard sales today. One was outside at a church. I may have found a few 25 cents treasures.
And I got a stack of 5 of those wire/mesh trash cans I like to use to protect plants when they are coming up. I was very happy to spy those underneath the table. The stack of 5 was $1. Very happy with that price lol
I hope your next post has more positive news about how you're feeling.

    1. Thank you, Debra. Yes, last night was pain-free, too - not a lot of sleep (just wasn't sleepy), but, there was no pain. It's been a good morning, too.

Oh, how lovely to go to yard sales and find things for such great prices! You need to start blogging so you can share your finds with us! I used to hold joint yard sales with one of my cousins and a friend of hers. I'd buy all my cousin's daughter's stuff (her daughter is 3 years older than my daughter), her friend would buy all my daughter's stuff (her daughter was a couple of years younger than my daughter) and we'd take turns to host lunch for each other! LOL.

  9. So good that you had had a decent night and were pain free to go for the blood tests. I hope that the results will be helpful and lead to healing for you.
I put out my hummingbird feeders yesterday and I have wee visitors who sometimes perch on the lilac nearby before going for a drink. So lovely to see these miniature birds again.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. I had a pain-free night, too, last night, and today has been good. Such a blessing!

There are hummingbirds in my garden who find the flowers on the bottlebrush tree to their liking. They really are a delight, aren't they? I'm glad you are feeding them and I hope they continue to visit your garden. :)
