Starting February

It's February, already!  January just sped by, I feel!  I'm excited about starting a new month, though, and am looking forward to February.

It rained a little in the morning, but, the afternoon was sunny and dry.

In the morning, I made milk rice (kiribath) and spicy onion relish (seeni sambol), for brunch, since it was the first of the month and it is my custom to do so.  Then, I practiced the piano and dusted the living room, dining area, family room, and my bedroom.  Changed the bed sheets, too, and, during the course of the day, did three loads of laundry.

I called cousin V to wish her for her birthday and chatted with her for a bit.  Later, neighbor T called and I chatted with her, too.  She called me again, later in the afternoon, to say she had the empty jar from the jam I had given her for Christmas, so, I walked over to her house and collected the jar from her.  In the evening, I chatted with friend R.

Both my daughter and I went outside in the afternoon to get some sunshine - she sat on the low wall between neighbor T's house and ours and worked on her computer; I walked for about 15 minutes.  I had set the timer for 20 minutes, but, I got tired after 15!  Shortly after that, I had an asthma flare up and I had to take my rescue inhaler.

In the evening, I took the trash cans to the curb and cooked a chicken curry for dinner.  I had a tortilla with it for my dinner; daughter had rice.  Freshly picked oranges from the garden for our dessert.

It was a productive day until the asthma flared up!  I am happy with what I was able to accomplish today.

This week, I will be focusing on the dining room for my weekly cleaning.  My plan is to clean the china cabinet - take everything out, wash the glass shelves, and put things back.  Hopefully, I will also be able to declutter a few things, too (my decluttering goal for this month is 30 items).

I have also picked on the kitchen as my room of the month.  I was debating between choosing my bedroom or the kitchen, but, I think, with two of us cooking, the kitchen needs my attention more than the bedroom!  The cabinet under the sink is in good shape after I cleaned it, back in September, but, other cabinets and drawers need tidying and the wall behind the stove could do with a good scrubbing!

Today, I am grateful for:

- The start of a new month

- Inhalers and medications

- Phone calls with family and friends

- Working appliances

- Fresh oranges from the garden

Today's joyful activity was chatting with my cousin.

Tuesday's To Do List:

- Water the house plants
- Piano lesson
- Bring the trash cans in
- Pay bills/do paperwork & filing
- Start on the china cabinet
- Start on the kitchen (utensils drawers)

How was your Monday?  What are your plans for Tuesday and the rest of February?

  1. Every time you mention oranges, I think that we need to get some. This is the time of year that we get fresh oranges from FL that are so good. But first, we have to shovel snow so we can get the car out so we can get out.

    1. This is the season for oranges! I wish I could share some from my tree with you, but, these days, I am not going to the post office to mail anything! I hope you are able to get some for yourself, after you shovel the snow to get the car out!

  2. Just about every time you post about making something I am unfamiliar with, I look up the recipe. I think I might have to give the onion relish a whirl. Do you add dried fish flakes to yours?

    1. Yes, I do add dried fish flakes, but, you can make it without the fish flakes, too. I posted my directions for making both milk rice and seeni sambol here:

  3. You sound very productive. I will do some housework and cooking today. I need to oil the antiques. Sitting out in the sunshine sounds ideal.

    1. Thank you, Stephenie; I'm trying to be productive! Too often I review my day at night and feel I didn't accomplish anything! Sounds like you've a productive day planned, too. How often do you oil the antiques?

    1. Thank you, Martha. Yes, I'll take it slow and easy, today; maybe wear a dust mask when I am doing any cleaning!

  5. I'm glad you stopped exercising when you did, given the asthma attack. It pays to listen to one's body.
I went to the supermarket today for the first time since 9 December, and I bought eight oranges :o) The idea of being able to pick one's own just sounds so idyllic to me. Enjoy!

    1. Thank you, Lady Ella. I must remember to take a puff of my asthma inhaler about 30 minutes before I plan to walk or exercise, next time. I'm glad you were able to go to the grocery store and buy yourself some oranges. Hope you enjoy them as much as my daughter and I are enjoying the ones from our tree. :)

  6. Hope your asthma has subsided. Having trouble breathing is so debilitating.

    1. It's better, today, thank you, Ratnamurti. I did have to take the rescue inhaler, again, today, though. The air quality was moderate but not good for those with asthma and allergies. Hope all is well with you and yours.

  7. February can only improve as we got up around 10.20 am and the day got away on me! But I did change the bed, went grocery shopping, washed the bedding and somehow got caught up so that supper wasn't too late.

    1. You might have slept in and had a late start to the day, but, you were very productive and got everything done! I'd say that was a good day! :)

  8. I'm late in commenting but I do hope the asthma settled down quickly.

I need to sort out the display cupboard where I keep all my glass paperweights an ornaments as it's all looking rather dull and dusty. It takes ages though, so it won't get done anytime soon! I hope you have a better attitude than me and you get your china cabinet done.

    1. Thank you, Eileen; I had a bit of asthma, yesterday, too, but, I'm doing OK, so far, today. :) I haven't made a start on the china cabinet, yet, but, I hope to get started, later, today. Daughter has a day of work-related Zoom meetings and is using the dining table, so I will wait until she's done.

  9. Do you think your air quality was bad while you were outside and that is what caused your asthma attack?

That's a big job - emptying the china cabinet a cleaning everything.
I will read forward with your week and see how you made out.

I made my own milk rice this week. Rice pudding lol
    I've been in a pudding/custard making mood.

    1. I think the air quality wasn't very good, Debra. The weather report said "moderate" if I remember correctly, but, that usually comes with a warning about being "unhealthy for sensitive persons" such as those with asthma and other respiratory issues.

Rice pudding is good! I especially like something called 'kheer' which is Indian rice pudding. :)
