Thursday

The heading was just about all I was able to manage when it came to a blog post, yesterday!  LOL.  That saying about molasses in January comes to mind when I try to describe yesterday.   Wednesday had been no better, but, I did manage to clean the kitchen, on Wednesday evening.

I couldn't fall asleep on Wednesday night until past 5:00 a.m.  I was in bed, but, I was wide awake!  Then, I woke up to the sound of Dancer being sick.  Not my favorite way to wake up, but, once I had cleaned up after him, I didn't want to go back to bed.  It was already 10:00 a.m., anyway.  Dancer was fine, the rest of the day, although I restricted his access to his dry food.  I left the bowl out for a short while, then, took it away until later.  He was still able to reach the dry food in the bag, but, he had to work for it, getting it out a piece at a time with his paw, so he was not as likely to overeat!

I spent the rest of the morning replying to blog comments, reading and commenting on a couple of other blogs, etc., and checking on the garden.  The peach tree is doing well; no more leaf drops, although there are plenty of damaged leaves.  Makes me wonder if the original leaf drop was due to a lack of water (I've been watering it practically daily, since then, rather than twice or trice a week!).   I checked on the fruit, too, although, according to the label that came with the tree, the fruit won't be ready for picking until late June to mid July.

Peaches Ripening on the Tree

I received a partial delivery of my latest grocery shipment, yesterday.  They are mostly canned items and there is a packet of new socks, in there, too!  I sprayed the boxes with disinfectant and kept them to air for a couple of days before I open them.

In the early evening, I watched news and knitted a bit.  Friend R called and we chatted for a bit and then, I took one of the corrugated boxes the earlier deliveries had arrived in, flattened it, and put it down in the side yard.  It is my intention to use these delivery boxes as part of the weed barrier for the "path/stone creek" I am hoping to have in the side yard.  I have another box waiting to be broken down and then, I'll have to see if I can scrounge up more boxes!  I'll have to check my neighbors' recycling bins on Monday!  LOL!

Afterwards, I watered the back garden and practiced the piano, after a long time!  Shh!  Don't tell neighbor S, as she asks me if I am practicing and I have been telling her, yes!  LOL!

Later, I called friend S (the one who works in the grocery store) to congratulate her daughter on graduating from high school.  The graduating class held a parade around the school block, my friend told me, being driven by their parents and applauded by the neighbors.

Still later, I video chatted with my daughter, exchanged emails with a friend,  played a few games of Solitaire on the computer, and decided to go to sleep at a decent hour (read 2:00 a.m.) instead of writing a blog post!

Yesterday, I was grateful for:
- Dancer was fine the rest of the day
- Daughter had a good work day
- Deliveries of groceries and other items
- Water for the garden
- The peach tree is coming along well

My joyful activity was being out in the garden.

How was your Thursday?  What are your plans for Friday?

  1. Isn't it maddening to lie in bed, knowing it's well past time for sleep, and getting more and more wide awake as the minutes just drag past? I can relate ... but have no solution-
The yards here once again look like a neglected jungle ... obviously the guy I thought I had settled with to maintain things has found more pleasant work- guess it is back to square one again- Paige did manage to get the pool reopened, so baby Jamie is getting plenty of water fun ... and don't worry, there is a completely locked double-fencing arrangement around it, plus she swims like a happy little fish-
I am glad you are still able to get deliveries and have some semblance of tasty things to eat ... and you can stay in touch with your friends and family- we are trying to stay sensible, but our recent upheavals have thrown a true spanner into the works-
Do take care ... and know you and yours are in my thoughts-
As always, fondest wishes from here-
    Barb

    1. I'm just glad that I don't have to get up after a sleepless or too little sleep night and go to work in the morning!

I'm sorry your yard guy didn't continue to show up. I wish you could find someone like M. In fact, when one of his clients moved to Texas, they wanted him to go with them! LOL. I can see why!

That's nice that Jamie has a pool in which to play and swim. I never learned to swim, myself! Can't float, either!

Thank you, Barb. Life continues to be more or less on an even keel, at this end. I'm sorry you've experienced some recent upheavals; never good even during normal times and probably made even worse at this particular time with everything that's going on. Take good care of yourself and take it easy. I continue to keep you and yours in my prayers.

  2. Oh dear, these sleeping problems! I've had them too, recently. This morning I went for groceries, 9 days after the previous trip and I got tea bags!! So happy to have real tea again. I am hoping that the things I bought will last for 10 days - not quite as much pressure as having to think for 2 weeks. Your suggestion was a good one. I even bought 2 pots of flowers to place either side of the front steps. I watered them well and I also watered some mystery wild plants that have sprung up in a clump beside the driveway. I can't wait to see what flowers they have!

It is very hot every day and I just had to have a good long nap this afternoon. Then DH helped me with some pruning which only took 5 minutes and I tidied up the rose bush as well before supper.

    1. Yay! You did your grocery shopping and was able to buy your tea bags! I'm glad you found the 10 day suggestion a workable one. :) What kind of flowers did you buy for the front steps? Oh, wonder what the mystery wild plants will turn out to be!

Afternoon naps are good, no matter what the weather is like! But, one does get tired when it is so hot. We are supposed to get some warmer days, next week! It might even be hot (forecast says 98-99F on some days). I am looking forward to that! :D

    2. The plant pots contain a mix of petunias, some little white flowers and some other flowers I can't name that have small magenta flowers with white edges!

    3. Oh, they sound pretty! A mixture of flowers! I wonder if the magenta flowers with white edges are dianthus (Sweet William) and the little white flowers are lobularia (Alyssum or Sweet Alyssum). :)

    4. I think you are right about the alyssum, but the others I described wrongly, as they are magenta pink with the white in the center and I found out they are Verbena!
I'm pretty sure the mystery plants are Solomon's Seal, which is interesting as I've only encountered False Solomon's Seal on our lot in the past.

    5. Verbena is nice, too, and I've read that they are pretty drought tolerant, so I shall look into them, myself. And how nice to have what could be Solomon's Seal growing! Yay, for volunteer plants!

  3. I'm glad the peach tree seems to be fine now. It looks like you'll have a bountiful harvest and I expect they will taste delicious.
I hope Dancer is feeling better now. X

    1. Thank you, Jules. I watered the peach tree, again, this morning (I had skipped watering it, yesterday). I am looking forward to fresh, tree ripened peaches and am also planning to make some jam! To that end, I ordered a supply of sugar! Depending on how many jars I have, I might also need to order some canning jars.

Dancer seems well, this morning. Keeping my fingers crossed!

  4. Socks in the mail! Knitting socks, knitting more socks, ordering socks...you sound like someone with cold feet. :)

    1. Ha, ha! You guessed it! :D I wear socks every day, except on the very hottest days. My old socks are starting to get holes in them, so, I thought I had better stock up on socks!

  5. It is so exciting to see all those peaches ripening up so quickly. What an amazing lot of them. I can imagine all the wonderful jars of jam you will be able to make, as well as all that fresh eating. Yum.

I have been napping a lot lately. I am blaming the physical labour, the heat, and the appearance of hordes of black flies this week. It makes working outside less tolerable after two hours. I know I am getting things done, but I don't like working in the heat like some people I know. (*ahem*)

Good that you were able to get a grocery delivery. I put it off all week, so I will have to get on it first thing Monday. I haven't even prepared my Trivia questions yet for tonight's game on-line. Oops.

    1. It is exciting to see the peaches ripening! Especially since I lost the entire crop, last year, as they all fell when there about the size of almonds! I'm looking forward to the fresh peaches and jam (even ordered more sugar in anticipation of jam making!) and my daughter would like me to try canning peach halves or slices, since she prefers that to jam! I don't have a canner, as such, but, when has a lack of specialized equipment stopped me from doing something? :D

Believe me, I would be napping, too, if I worked outside for two hours, heat or no heat! I usually stay indoors during the hot afternoons, anyway! :D

Good luck with the trivia questions! Have a fun!

  6. I'm having the opposite problem ... too much sleep is making me sluggish and lethargic. It's going to be a lazy weekend.

    The peaches are looking good!

    1. Most probably you need the extra sleep, Eileen. I prefer "relaxed" to "lazy" and think a relaxed weekend will be a good thing. It's a long holiday weekend for us, because Monday is Memorial Day (to honor U.S. military personnel who died while in service; observed on the last Monday in May). It is also considered the unofficial start of summer, here. I, too, am planning on a relaxed weekend. :)

  7. No wonder you were slow as molasses with the little bit of sleep you got. Hopefully you have caught up on your sleep.
I'm glad Dancer seems to be ok.

I cut the front yard on Thursday and the back yard yesterday so that's done for another week. I took over this job last year when we got a new lawn mower.
We got a battery operated mower and it's wonderful.
It's so lightweight and quiet. Really there is basically zero exertion required and you just take a nice long walk pushing a small mower in front of you.

We are getting some rain today and I've made a chicken curry this morning for later.

    1. I used to function well on 5 hrs. of sleep a night, when I was younger, but, not any more!

I hadn't heard of a battery operated lawn mower, before! I bought a push mower, when I first bought the house, and I still have it, in the shed, probably quite rusty, too, and unused, since M does the lawn for me. But the battery operated one sounds like it is easy to use!

I'm having chicken curry, this weekend, myself! I thawed a package I had in the freezer. :)

Hope you have a good weekend, Debra. Take care and stay safe!
