Joining blog friend Joy with posting ten pictures taken on the 10th of the month. These photos were taken on the 10th of September, although I am posting them a day or two late (started the post on the evening of September 11, then, got distracted watching some of the 25th anniversary of 9/11 specials on TV, and am publishing the post shortly after midnight on September 12!)
We have started letting the chickens out to roam the garden in the evenings; here are Niwatori and Henny Penny (with a glimpse or two of Mochi, one of the garden kitties):

Thank you, Joy, for hosting the Ten on the 10th Photo Challenge.
You make me nostalgic for the time when we experimented with keeping chickens. It wasn't very successful and only lasted for about a year. However, I did like visiting them and hearing their gentle noises.
ReplyDeleteGlad to have brought you some hopefully happy memories of the time you kept chickens, FD. We've had ours for just over seven weeks and we are enjoying the experience. :)
DeleteNice Chick Pics!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Anne. :)
DeleteAwwwww.....I love chickens! Thank you so much for sharing these beautiful and delightful photos!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Linda. So glad you enjoyed the photos. We love our chickens; they are so funny!
DeleteHappy chickens make for good photos!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Bushlady. They are at their happiest when they are running around in the garden. :)
DeleteNot only are they providing eggs, you chickens are providing a lot of entertainment.
ReplyDeleteThat they are! Every evening, daughter and I spend about an hour in the garden with them, watching them run around and interact with each other and the garden cats. :)
DeleteThey do seem to like the entire garden. The cats are accepting of them, yes? I guess eyeing each other up in their enclosure for a month or so has gotten them used to the idea that they live here too.
ReplyDeleteThey are still exploring parts of the garden; today they explored the area under the lemon trees and the "curry leaf forest". But, they spent a lot of their garden time under the calamondin tree, eating the grass there. The cats seem to be accepting them; the kittens want to play with them, but, we are always there to keep an eye on them, just in case. The chickens are not afraid of them, though.
DeleteIt's nice to see the hens roaming free. You'll be able to say your eggs are truly free range! G's dogs, even the excitable terrier, are trained not to bother her hens at all. She can leave the door to the coup open when she goes to clean them out, and the dogs stay out. Once I asked what would happen if by accident a bird got out or a dog went in and she said 'nothing'. Then she put one of her dogs in the wheelbarrow and wheeled it into the coup, and it just sat there! Then two hens flew up into the wheelbarrow and still nothing happened! This is the same dog that runs after every squirrel and pigeon, and has been known to attack successfully!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Lady Ella. Wow! G's dogs are well trained, indeed! Our garden cats are not as well trained, but, Niwatori is starting to show them who is boss! She'll run at the kittens, with her wings flapping and chase them off if they get too close! Henny Penny is more unconcerned; she's too busy scratching at the ground to notice the kitties.
