Friday

Spring Rose

This yellow rose is the first spring rose in my garden, this year!  It is a vivid yellow and even gardener M commented on it.

Today, I filled out the form that was part of the jury duty summons and registered for jury duty over the phone.  I am to start my period of jury service on Monday, March 28.  I have to call in on the night before to find out if I am required to go to the courthouse in person, or not.  If I am not required to report in person, then, I need to call in on Monday night to find out if I need to go in on Tuesday, and so forth, until Friday.  If I am not required to report in person on Friday, then, I would be considered to have served my jury duty for this year.  If I am required to report in person on any of the days during that week, then, I have to go in and be available to be selected for a jury panel.  If I am selected to be on a jury panel, then, that would count as my first day of jury duty and I will complete my jury service only after the trial ends.  If, however, I am not selected to be on a jury panel at the end of the day I report in person, then, I will be excused from having to do jury duty for the rest of the year.  I am hoping that I will be able to call in every day and not be required to report in person!

Later, in the afternoon, I got my tax documents folder organized (I have been putting all the tax documents in the file folder as I received them in the mail, but, there were one or two other items I needed to get from other file folders to complete all the documents I needed) and took the documents over to the accountant's office.  I had intended to just drop off the file with the receptionist, but, my accountant was in the office and when she saw me, she came out of her office to greet me with a hug!  We were both masked and I was very glad that I had a N95 mask on!  Oh, the tricky parts of social interaction during the time of Covid!  I handed the documents over to her and we chatted for a few minutes before I left.  She will call me to go over the tax forms when she's completed them.  I used to do my own taxes a long time ago, but, I prefer to have them done by a professional, these days.

M was watering the garden when I got back from dropping off my tax documents.  He took the metal shelving unit out of the garage, hosed it down for me, brushed the cobwebs on the wall behind the shelving unit, swept that area of the floor, and put the shelving unit back for me.

I finally made the pancakes my daughter wanted me to make for brunch, today.  The thin pancakes, with sugar and lemon juice.  Daughter had a couple of them with Nutella and banana slices, as well!  Later, for dinner, I cooked salmon, rice, and asparagus.  Then, I baked a pan of brownies for dessert!  Afterwards, I ran the dishwasher.

Today, I am grateful for:

- The first rose of the season
- M helping me with the garage cleaning, as well as the garden
- A safe drive to the tax accountant's office and back
- Working appliances
- Electricity to run them

Today's joyful activity was chatting on the phone with friend R and aunt C.

How was your Friday?  What are your plans for the weekend?

  1. The yellow rose its beautiful.

I do hope your commitment to jury service passes with you just having to phone in every day. The thought of having to go into the Court building and waiting with the other potential jurors is worrying to say the least.

Does you tax year end at the end of March? Thankfully I no longer need to submit tax returns now I'm retired, otherwise I'd be doing the same as you.

It was very kind of M to help sort out the shelving unit and sweep that part of the garage for you. Are you pleased with your progress so far?

    1. It is a pretty rose, isn't it?

Thank you, Eileen; I don't like the idea of being in a crowded room (masks are required, but, I've seen how some people tend to wear them, without covering both nose and mouth, etc.), after being so careful up to now!

The tax year is the calendar year, but, the deadline for filing is April 15 of the following year. So, I am filing now for 2021. We are required to file unless we are below a certain income level, unless one is a minor, dependent, etc.

I did a little more in the garage, today, and I am very happy with my progress so far! :)

  2. The rose is stunning.
I've been weeding in the garden this afternoon, and having a think as to what I should grow this year. I'm leaning towards wild flowers again, as they attracted so many pollinators.
I don't blame you for getting your accountant to complete your taxes. It's one less thing for you to worry about. X

Wildflowers will be lovely, I think. I am having some self seeded wildflower plants coming up, this year and I know the bees will be very happy!

Yes, I'd rather pay the tax preparer to do the work for me as my taxes have become a bit complicated in recent years. I'm all for less stress! :)

  3. The rose is wonderful! I hope you don't have to be present for jury duty. Taxes - the time of year again. All the information and receipt letters have been coming in to our mailbox.
I managed to get round to see a friend near us this afternoon and we had a lovely visit. I wore a mask until we had our cups of tea, but she doesn't go far and nor do I so I'm not worried. I really needed to see her in person as she is going through a difficult time.

    1. I thought you'd like the rose, Bushlady. :)
Thank you; I, too, hope that I don't have to go in person for jury duty!
I keep a file for the taxes and put things in there as they arrive, but, there is always that last minute running around to make sure I have everything I need - a copy of the county property taxes paid (to be claimed as a deduction), a copy of the driver's license fee (another deduction), documentation for charitable deductions, etc.
I'm glad you were able to visit your friend, Bushlady. I'm sure she appreciated the visit. You are a good friend. :)

  4. Not sure I'd like being with so many people. Hope the jury duty works out with you just having to call. I don't have to serve as I'm not a citizen but I've received more summons for jury duty than my husband has his whole life!

    1. Thank you, Sharon; I hope I can just call and not have to go in person. Too funny about you being summoned more often than your husband! They summoned my mother, too, even though she too wasn't a citizen and had passed away! I had to send in copies of her death certificate, etc., and request her name be removed from the list!

  5. Your yellow rose is stunning, really beautiful. I hope the jury service works out well for you, it all sounds very complicated to me as does your tax situation. I don't blame you for paying a professional to do the leg work for you.

    1. Thank you, Eileen; the yellow of the rose has faded a little bit, now, but, it is still very pretty!
I will take it one day at a time with the jury duty and see how it all works out. Taxes tend to be a headache, but, I'm glad to have the accountant handle it! :D

  6. That is a beautiful rose, especially with that deep yellow color. If you do have to go to jury duty in person, I think you'll be okay. The jury room seems like a place where they would enforce the proper wearing of masks. That's something that we do at the library where I work. however, do you have enough health concerns that you could get a doctor's excuse from jury duty?

Yes, you are right; I should be fine if I do have to serve in person. I did consider getting a doctor's excuse, but, decided against it. I do have several risk factors, but, I'm fully vaccinated and I can wear a mask. :)

  7. I have my fingers crossed for you to be able to fulfill your jury duty with just the phone calls.
I have never been called for jury duty but my husband has, several times. He even sat on a grand jury once - deciding if someone should be indicted for a crime.

That's good that you were able to get your tax things to the accountant. I have all my information entered into my software and just need to review it before I file the federal electronically and then mail the state return. The state electronic filing costs $19.95!!! No thanks. lol. I will mail it.

    1. Thank you, Debra; I do hope that I can just phone in and be told I don't need to come in! I have served on several juries and was once in Judge Ito's (of the infamous OJ Simpson trial) court room!

Good idea to mail in the state returns if they charge you that much for electronic filing! :D

    2. Judge Ito - how interesting.
Oh gosh, I was glued to the coverage of that crime/trial.

    3. Me, too, Debra; I worked downtown in a building near the courthouse and was a witness to all the media camped outside, etc. They constructed platforms outside, along the sidewalks, for the camera crews, etc. It was quite a circus!
