Saturday - Curfew!

We are under curfew in the City of Los Angeles, tonight.  On the day when non-essential retail businesses, grooming services, and restaurants were supposed to open for business after being shut down due to the Covid-19 quarantining, we are under curfew for reasons other than the virus.

My day started off fairly quiet.  I watered the peach tree, orange tree, the tomato and cantaloupe plants, etc., first thing in the morning.  Then, I checked on the front garden (didn't have to water it, because M watered it for me, yesterday).  I picked a rose from the climbing rose growing up the lattice; my cell phone camera doesn't capture it properly, but, but the outer petals look like red velvet!  I don't know the name of this rose, but, I'm going to call it Red Velvet!

Red Velvet

Dancer loves roses and came to take a closer look at it and, of course, tried to eat it!

Dancer says, "Take time to eat the roses!"

I sewed two more masks, in the morning, to add to the four I had already made to give to the mail carrier.  I hung the bag with the masks on the mail box with a note to her, but, although someone delivered my mail and the medication refills from the pharmacy, the bag with the masks were not taken.  Maybe she didn't see the note.  Or, maybe a different mail carrier did the rounds, today.  I shall have to look out for her on Monday.

Later in the afternoon, I cut out and sewed four more masks.  I am keeping one of them for myself.  I only had one mask for myself and that was the prototype I had first made.  I needed a second mask to have on hand.  The rest will be for my friend's daughter - I will make three or four more masks for her and then, call her to come and pick them up.

M stopped by in the early afternoon with a bag of potting soil he had bought for me.  We wanted potting soil to plant the moringa plants in bigger pots.  I don't want to plant them in the ground until they are a little bit bigger.

Later, I watched news and knitted.  I finished the new hat, but, haven't sewn it up, yet.  I'm afraid I sat glued to the TV for longer than I should have, watching the news as it unfolded.

Brunch had been a scrambled egg, with bacon and hash browns.  Dinner was broiled chicken drumsticks with a salad.  Afterwards, I baked some zucchini muffins:

Zucchini Muffins
This time, I was careful to take them out of the oven before the bottoms got too brown!

Today, I am grateful for:
- M bringing me the potting soil
- Video chatting with my daughter
- My fabric and thread stash
- The garden is coming along, nicely
- Zucchini muffins

Today's joyful activity was sewing.

Plans for tomorrow include more mask sewing.

How was your Saturday?  What are your plans for Sunday?

  1. Keep safe, Bless. We have watched with sadness, the BBC reports about what is going on in the USA right now. Racism is evil, and violence is not the answer. Your nation is in our prayers as we celebrate Pentecost in our churches, and pray for God's Holy Spirit of Peace

    1. Thank you, Angela. I am safe and so is my daughter. The whole situation is just heartbreaking - both the reasons for the protests and the aftermath.

  2. The rose is beautiful - Dancer obviously had good taste 🥴

I read about the curfew, it's been reported in the UK press. How do they notify everyone about a curfew? Those sort of riots and the underlying tensions are scary at any time but somehow seem worse in the current situation. I hope you can stay safe, Bless. I know you have no plans to go out but is the rioting far enough away from where you live that you don't need to worry about that side of things?

    1. Ha, ha, yes, Dancer has good tastes!

The Mayor announced the curfew on TV and the news reporters repeated it. Most probably alerts were also posted on the freeway electronic traffic alerts signboards. I don't know if cell phone alerts were sent, because I didn't receive one.

I am OK, thank you, and so is my daughter. I live far enough away from downtown (although I used to work in the heart of downtown) that I wasn't in any danger. But, some people were lighting fireworks in my neighborhood and I know some protesters were setting off fireworks into the police lines, so, every time I heard the noise of fireworks going off (they are illegal in the city, to begin with), I cringed, a little! It's just upsetting to know that this is all going on, especially with everything else that we are dealing with.

  3. My cats try to eat any plant I bring in. That's why I have to keep them behind closed doors in an extra bedroom. Even if the plants aren't bad for them, the cats always seem to throw them up.

    1. Yes, one reason why I can't keep any flowers or plants where Dancer can reach them! There is just one plant on the floor and Dancer has learned to leave it alone for the most part. He throws up often enough, anyway (like this morning!), without any help!

  4. So much is going on - it's a really horrible and unsettling time in our country.
I thought about you while watching the news and seeing the many demonstrations in cities everywhere including yours.
And I worry about the impact of the virus on the people demonstrating.

Today is 5/31 - that means it's my self imposed deadline for transplanting. So I was out at 6:15 this morning getting the last things moved.
All done for another year. :)

I'd give that rose the exact same name if it were mine. Red Velvet.

Dancer is so funny trying to eat it. lol

    1. It really is a sad time, Debra. Just the virus was more than enough to deal with and now, something else on top of it!

Well done on meeting your self-imposed deadline for transplanting! May your garden, and the newly transplanted plants, thrive!

He's a funny cat, isn't he? He loves broccoli leaves and cauliflower leaves, but, not cabbage. He loves spinach and leaf lettuce, but, not, iceberg lettuce. I used to bring him broccoli leaves when I grocery shopped in person, but, he's missing that, now. I think I'll have to order a bag of mixed salad greens to share with him!

  6. Sorry to hear of the additional worries at this time. The news is alarming and sad.
I love deep red roses. When I was a child we visited people who had a "rose garden" with lots of the red ones. I seem to remember every flower and plant I ever saw as a child.
Glad you didn't scorch your muffins this time!
I put the two planters under the porch roof but we didn't get frost, however it was only about 43°F in the morning and it is still cold. While I was making lunch, DH looked in at the front door and told me that I had a customer. Sure enough the dog next door was outside and watched eagerly through the glass when I went to the cookie jar! He sits nicely for his cookie.
I've just listened to Pastor Bob's excellent sermon. I'm glad I did and I can see this is going to become a Sunday habit as well as watching a live Mass (Wichita this morning). We take our consolation where we can in this pandemic.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. I am just hoping that some good will come out of all these difficult times we are all going through.

Brr! That's cold! Especially after you've had it so warm just a few days ago! I'm glad your planters are in a sheltered place.

Too funny about the neighbor's dog! Does your neighbor know that the dog is a regular visitor? :D

I haven't gone over to listen to Pastor Bob's sermon, yet. But, I will.

Hope you have a good rest of the day, Bushlady, and enjoy a peaceful Sunday. Take care.

  7. I’m glad to hear you and your daughter are ok.
I don’t watch TV, but did watch news on YouTube NPR and NBC channels. It’s so heartbreaking to see what’s going on. On top of the pandemic.

    Stay safe Bless.

  8. Those zucchini muffins look really scrumptious. Do you have plans to give some of them away?

I hope you can catch the mail carrier today to assure her that you meant them as a gift to her. Anyone would be appreciative.

Does Dancer have a special love for roses? My cats loved any kind of living plant that came inside. They never stayed inside a vase. They all had to be pulled out and thrown onto the floor.

    1. Thank you, Susan; yes, I already shared some of them with neighbor S. :) The rest disappeared at an alarming rate! :o

I put a big sign on the bag with the masks, which left her with no doubts! I also heard her, at the mail box, and was able to talk with her. Inside the bag, I put a note telling her to wash the masks before using, but, I was able to tell her that, as well. I hope she finds them useful.

Dancer loves flowers, but, roses seem to be a favorite! He will eat them, pull them out of the vase, and play with them! :)
