Friday - The Return of May Gray

The Return of May Gray - ha, that sounds like it could be the title of a novel, doesn't it?  But, no, it's not the title of a novel.  It's what the meteorologists call our weather in May.  The marine layer moved in, today, and with it, the cloud cover and overcast skies that is more typical of our weather in May, which is called "May Gray" (a precursor to June Gloom) and a 20F drop in the temperatures to the low 70s!

I spent the morning on the computer!  Later in the afternoon, however, I cut out and sewed several face masks.  I am running short of sewing thread!  My plan is to use up all what I have and then, if necessary, order more thread online and arrange for a curbside pick up!  Maybe I'll order some 1/4 inch elastic, too!  Our shops opened on Wednesday, but, I am not likely to go shopping in person, any time soon!

By the way, as of today, hair and nail salons/barbershops and restaurants may open for business in my county and city!  Imagine that!  We had 1,824 new confirmed cases (the increase in number is partly due to increased testing and delayed testing results coming in) and 50 deaths due to the virus in the past 24 hours in my county.  Not the entire state of California, but, in Los Angeles county (although L.A. county accounts for nearly half of the numbers for the state and the city of L.A. accounts for about half of the county numbers).  I guess the ratio of new cases and deaths per available hospital beds and ventilators, etc. is such that it has been deemed safe to reopen businesses with some restrictions.  Just how well those restrictions will be complied with and enforced is yet to be seen.  I guess we will find out in the upcoming weeks.

In the evening, friend M came to tend to the garden.  He had taken last Friday off to have a long weekend over Memorial Day weekend, so he was seeing the garden after two weeks and he was surprised and pleased to see the peach tree with the fruits ripening on it, the tomato plant, and the cantaloupe plants, etc.  He mowed the back yard for me and tidied up the front.

Later, I watched some news and knitted, then, video chatted with my daughter.

Today, I am grateful for:
- M tending to the garden
- The cooler weather
- My sewing supplies stash
- Electricity to run the sewing machine
- Being able to video chat with my daughter

Today's joyful activity was sewing masks to give away.

Plans for tomorrow include watering the back yard (M watered the front for me, today) and more sewing.  Need to start the car, too!

How was your Friday?  What are your plans for Saturday?

  1. You're ahead of us as we don't have firm dates for restaurant and pubs to reopen, and hairdressers open in July. It scary isn't it and is driven by an economic need rather than health. Stay safe!

Glad M could see the difference in the garden - it changes so rapidly at this time of year.

    1. I think it is driven by both economic and political needs. I will continue to stay at home to the extent possible because I have at least 5 existing health conditions that put me in the high risk category!

The garden changes almost daily, now! My day starts with a walk around the garden, checking on things, and seeing what's new. :)

Hope all is well with you, too, Eileen.

  2. May Gray does sound gloomy! We have had an amazing drop in temperature combined with rain. Right now in the middle of the day it is 58°F. Well, in England we used to say "Ne'er cast a clout till May be out." and of course I put away all my winter clothes already! But I do have jeans on today instead of capris and I have a cardi over my top, and warm socks.

You are wise to plan to stay home. We hear all the time that this and that are opening up, but we don't hear that the virus has gone away!

I'm waiting for the rain to stop so I can check if the robin I saw collecting nesting material is building in one of our sheds!

    1. Oh, wow, that is quite a weather change, isn't it? A drop of almost 40 degrees, F! Well, of course it happened after you put away all your winter clothes! LOL.

No, the virus hasn't gone away and it is quite unlikely that it will go away, completely! I will need to go out, eventually, as I have medical appointments coming up, but, other than that, I plan to stay home!

I hope the rain ceases and you will be able to check on the robin and see if it built a nest in your shed! I used to have sparrows nesting in my garage, but, they haven't nested there in several years, now.

Hope you have a lovely day, Bushlady, and a good weekend. Take care.

  3. Bless, how clever to be making those masks. In New Zealand we now have just 1 person with covid. Very few were in intensive care and hardly any deaths. Thanks to our wonderful and fearless Prime Minister. My prayers to you and your daughter, go safe, go well xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

    1. Thank you, Ratnamurti. I am enjoying making the masks and doing my bit to contribute to the effort to keep people safe. I finally made a second mask for myself (I was using my first one, which was my prototype, as my only mask, because I was too busy making them for others! LOL)

  4. Yes, things are opening up slowly here as well but, like you say, the virus is still here - the same as it was- so we aren't changing our behavior.

I did an online order with Michaels and did a curbside pickup. I was out of white/cream colored yarn and needed it for my projects. It was very easy. I think you use Joanns for your crafty stuff and I'm sure they have the same service so you could get your thread.

    1. Debra, I did look into curbside pick up at both Michaels and Joanns. Like you said, it seems quite easy. I am thinking of doing that, but, for now, I think it is best to stay put, at least for the next few days! I have some colored thread leftover from various projects that I can use, instead of white thread, which is what I have been using. But, one day soon, I will need to pick up more thread!

  5. I made a comment here on your blog on Friday and now on Monday, I find you have added 6 more posts. You lead a far more interesting life than I do, ha,ha. Although at this point, you might be willing to settle for a more laid back and quiet atmosphere. My eyes have also been glued to the TV news about the unrest, and I hope things settle down for you. You really want to stay home and stay safe right now. I am thinking of you.

    1. Either that (more interesting life) or I am full of hot air! LOL!

Things are still quiet and "normal" in my neighborhood. I hope things remain that way. I plan to stay at home, but, I do have several medical appointments scheduled for this month. I don't know if I should reschedule them all, yet again, or keep them.
