Daughter Leaves Again on Monday

Today, our Thanksgiving break came to an end as daughter left to go back to Berkeley.  She had to be at the airport at noon and we left a little early in case there was a lot of traffic at the airport.  There wasn't much traffic on the way to the airport, but, there was a bit of a line of cars inside the airport.  However, we got there in good time.

I dropped her off and went to the bank to make a withdrawal.  Then, I went to the dollar store to buy a few things.  I needed some tissue paper, food storage bags, toothpaste, a white plastic table cover, and I also bought some groceries - bananas, tangerines, a bagged salad mix, two cans of coconut milk, a boxed cake mix, and a boxed brownie mix.  I think I will make the brownies to serve as another dessert at the almsgiving.  It is customary to offer an assortment of sweets and confectionery that we call "kavili" or "rasa kavili" which means "tasty eats"; the monks are not expected to eat all of it, but the intent is to offer them a variety so they can pick and choose.

I was just leaving the store when my daughter texted to say she had just boarded the plane.  But, about half an hour later, she texted me again to say that there was a delay as they were having some problems with a computer malfunction!  I am glad that they discovered the problem before they took off and not after, while they were in the air!

It was a sunny day and I debated whether to do a little more shopping - I still needed to go to the Asian/Chinese store to buy rice sticks noodles and I needed to go in the opposite direction to the pet supplies store for Dancer's flea medication and kitty litter.  But, it was almost 2:00 p.m. by then, and I hadn't eaten anything (only a cup of tea in the morning), so I came home and ate a salad with some turkey (Thanksgiving leftovers my friend had given me) and a banana.  Afterwards, I didn't feel like going out, again.  I did a load of laundry and some paperwork, instead.

Daughter texted me when her plane landed - she said it was a very turbulent flight and she was glad it was over!  She doesn't like to fly on the best of days and turbulent flights are scary.  At least, she doesn't get motion sickness (unlike me!).  She flies into Oakland airport and then, takes the subway from there to Berkeley and, today, she rode the bus from downtown Berkeley to near her apartment and walked the rest of the way.  She got to her apartment around 5:30 p.m.  I had frozen the rest of the shrimp curry I had made and sent that with her, along with the Brussels sprouts and the green beans and two of the almond croissants.  So, she'll have something for her dinner tonight and lunch for tomorrow; all she needs to do is cook some rice.  She will go grocery shopping tomorrow evening, after work, and then, cook for the week.

For my own dinner, tonight, I thawed one of the containers of chicken broth I had made and frozen and added the rest of the Thanksgiving turkey leftovers to it and made soup.  There is another serving of the soup, which I will have, tomorrow.

Today, I am grateful for:
- My daughter had a safe flight back
- The computer malfunction was discovered and fixed before the plane took off!
- A clear, sunny day
- I was able to accomplish a couple of almsgiving related tasks
- Safe driving

Today's joyful activity was spending the morning enjoying my daughter's company before she left and video chatting with her in the evening.

Tuesday's To Do List:
- Asian store for rice sticks
- Pay bills
- Go to the post office
- Library to return books
- Pet store to buy kitty litter and flea meds
- Tidy the family room
- Water the house plants
- Bring the trash cans in

  1. I'm glad your daughter had a safe, albeit turbulent, journey home. I love how you always send her home with food.
    Lovely photograph of Dancer. X

    1. Thank you, Jules. She's looked into other ways to travel home and back, including bus and train, but, flying seems to be the most convenient.

  2. I'm with you. Not only are turbulent flights unsettling, they make me motion sick. Not fun at all. But I'm glad you daughter is home safe and sound and her suitcase was filled with her supper.

    1. Thank you, Live and Learn. She said she was so tense and worried about the flight that, when she got home, she was exhausted and took a nap! She was laughing at me for sending her home with food, but, she was happy to have it, I think. :)

  3. The computer malfunction would have terrified me for the entire flight. I'm so glad your daughter made it safely home.

I hope Dancer on the shelf isn't as naughty as the elf on the shelf!

    1. It certainly worried her, Eileen, and she said she was tense and anxious the whole time. The last three flights have been very turbulent, she said. But, we are both very thankful that she arrived safely!

Well, Dancer on the shelf left a huge hairball for me to clean up, this morning, so, he's off to a good start! :D

  4. Glad she arrived safe and sound. That is great she is able to visit you so often. She must have a lot of frequent flier miles, LOL.

    1. Thank you, One Family. This year, especially, my daughter has been able to come down at least once every month since July, and twice during some months! I enjoy all her visits, but, she won't be able to come down that often, next year.

  5. aren't the 'moments of good-by' just dreadful ... even when you have a return date already planned-I am proud that all of mine have wonderful successful independent lives, but when that moment of leaving comes, I feel like that 'first day of pre-school' all over again-
it's great that you had a good visit, and it looks like you are back to busy, busy, busy again-
daughter 2 has her first surgery scheduled (she had needle/vacuum biopsy already), and for now it looks like a straight forward plan with optimal outcome-I have shown her your quilt to encourage her as she starts her climb up that mountain-
    fondest regards as always-

    1. Yes, it is hard to say good-bye, even when I know I'll see her again, later this month. I hope daughter 2's biopsy went well and the surgery will go well, too. Please let me know if you'd like me to post a request for prayers for her. My own surgery went well, but, it lasted longer than initially estimated as the tumor was larger than expected and they had to remove more than they estimated to make sure they had clear margins. Please tell your daughter that I wish her well and will keep her in my thoughts and prayers. As I mentioned earlier, please let me know if there is anything I can do.

  6. I'm glad that your daughter made it home safely. Flying can be very stressful these days. That was kind of you to send her home with such nutritious food.

    1. Thank you, Stephenie. She doesn't like flying, to begin with, and turbulent flights scare her. I always send food home with her; I think we've realized that food is my language of love! :D

  7. I'm glad you had all that time with your daughter and that she made it home safely. It seems like so many flights lately are being delayed due to weather and/or mechanical problems. That happened to my sister and to our Josh and Lauren on their trips too.

    1. Thank you, Debbie. I miss her when she goes back, but, she'll be home, again, in time for Christmas and be here till after the New Year! I hope your sister and Josh and Lauren had safe trips, after the flight delays.

  8. I think I'd prefer a "Dancer on the shelf". More fun, and totally unpredictable!

    1. Dancer on the shelf kept Mummy up all night, last night, because he was throwing up and I was worried! I called and got an appointment for this afternoon, to have him checked.
