Wednesday: Baby Blankets and Sunflowers

Remember this baby blanket I crocheted, earlier?  Today, I decided it was time to give it to my supervisor.  Her baby shower will be held in August, but I am not planning to attend it.

Crocheted Baby Blanket

But first, I needed to make a card to go with it:

Baby Gift Card

I used stencils to draw and cut out the bottle and bib.

Once the card was made and the blanket wrapped in some tissue paper and inserted into a bag, it was time to leave for work.  Our staff meeting was a brown bag meeting, scheduled for 12 noon.  Towards the end of the meeting, they brought out a cake and we celebrated my retirement.  Afterwards, I was given the rest of the cake to bring home!

The blanket was well-received and my immediate supervisor recalled how I had given a blanket when his daughter was born, too.  There are several colleagues and former colleagues who've received knitted and crocheted items from me, over the years.

I had a productive day at the office.  I am glad I took the opportunity to sort through and declutter much of my stuff prior to the move.  All I was left with are one box of files to go into storage and my current project files.  Today, I decluttered a bit more.  I don't keep a lot of personal items at the office.  The few items I do have - a flower pot holding my pens and pencils, an award I received, my name plates (I've two - an old one and a newer one), two small painted wooden boxes that were gifts to me from former colleagues, my coffee mug which was also a gift from a colleague - I will bring home, a few items at a time.  Today, I brought home the award and one name plate.  I am not quite sure what I'll do with them, except keep them as mementos of my working days!

However, should I decide that retirement is not for me, then, I have had a possible job offer!  At my supervisor's suggestion, someone gave me his business card and asked me to give him a call if I feel like working, again!  That was totally unexpected!

Flowers from a Friend

When I got home, I found a long brown box on my doorstep!  Inside, I found a bouquet of sunflowers!  They had been sent by one of my friends to celebrate completing 35 years of service and my retirement!  I stuck them in a vase, just to get them in some water; but sunflowers don't need a lot of arranging to look nice.  I must remember to put them in the other room and close the door during the night to keep Dancer from getting to them.

I've had a very relaxed evening.  The one productive thing I did was give Dancer his flea medicine.  And I video chatted with my daughter, of course.

Today, I am grateful for:
- Cake and well wishes at the office
- Flowers from a friend
- A possible job offer, should I decide retirement is not for me!
- A relaxed evening at home
- A cooler day

How was your Wednesday?

What a complement to be offered a job if you want it.

  2. You are so talented. Kinitting, sewing, card making you know it all. I like both the blanket and the matching card. I'm sure your supervisor was so happy.

    1. Thank you, Nil. One reason why I am looking forward to retirement is having enough time to do all the crafting I want to do!

  3. Beautiful blanket (and your card that you made!) and sunflowers...so nice. You just might want to work after retirement. You never know. You can decide then. Andrea

    1. Thank you, Andrea. I honestly don't see myself wanting to work, again, but, one never knows! I'll keep my options open for now! :)

    2. I know a few people who worked with my husband, who went back to work. But my husband loves retirement and does not have any desire to go back! Andrea

    3. I have a feeling I'd be like your husband and enjoy retirement too much to go back to work. But, I won't know for sure until I've retired! LOL.

  4. The sunflowers are beautiful, what a lovely surprise. It sounds like your colleagues are going to miss you. I wonder how many new arrivals will miss out on a Bless Blanket although maybe you will keep in touch with people and pop back to see them occasionally?

I'm intrigued - what is a brown bag meeting? xx

    1. The flowers were definitely a lovely surprise. Ha, ha, I like that name - Bless Blankets! Maybe I should open an online store and call it Bless Blankets!

A brown bag meeting is one where people bring their own lunches. I was just as mystified when I first heard the term. But, most packed lunches here are traditionally packed in a small brown paper bag that are made and sold specifically for the purpose. So, a lunch-time meeting where you bring your own lunch is called a brown bag meeting. :)

  5. It's hardly surprising the blanket was well received, as it is gorgeous. It must be a lovely feeling knowing your creations are being used by many of your colleagues.
The flowers are fabulous. Who doesn't love a sunflower? So cheerful and another kind gesture which just goes to show how well you are thought of Bless. I hope you manage to keep them safe from Dancer.
The job offer a must have come as a bit of a shock. X

    1. Thank you, Jules. I do enjoy making items to give as gifts, so am always happy when people seem to like them. Yes, I wasn't expecting a job offer when I announced my retirement! I don't think I will miss working, but, one never knows, does one?

  6. A lot of people work as consultants after retiring. They take a job here or there and work for a few weeks and then have time off. A nice way to get a little extra money. It sounds like you do the kind of work that would be conducive to that. I can see you doing that.

    1. Yes, several of my colleagues came back to work as consultants for short periods. I honestly don't see myself wanting to work, again, but, I might feel differently after I've been retired for a few months. :)
