Friday: Last Day at the Office

Definitely Off the Clock!
Officially, I am on vacation, starting on Monday until I actually retire.

I almost called in sick on my last day at the office!  I hadn't gone to sleep until almost 4:00 a.m. and I didn't feel like waking up at 7:30 a.m.  But I couldn't do that on my last day; that would not have been fair.

So, I went to the office and had a very busy day!  There were a couple of projects to be completed, after which I provided a status update table on all my projects to my supervisors.

Then, I cleaned out my cubicle.  Several people offered to help me take stuff to my car but, I don't keep a lot of personal items at the office, so everything fitted in two tote bags!  I gave away a few things, too, including a set of reference books.  One colleague asked if I was taking home the wooden shelf/low bench I had been using as a foot rest under my desk; I wasn't planning to take it with me so I gave it to her.  Another colleague asked if he could have my wooden coat rack and I said yes.

One of my colleagues (the one who received the foot rest) gave me a jade plant and another (a former supervisor) gave me flowers.  I've been told I'll be missed and to come back to visit and maybe go out to lunch.  I'll definitely keep in touch.

After I came home, I tidied up the place a little bit and friend M put up the window air conditioner in my room.  Later, I picked up my daughter from the airport.  Then, dinner and a little conversation.  After that, I finished unpicking my mother's blue satin underskirt.  She had sewn a fitted waist with darts and a waistband.    It was tight on me.  I removed the waistband, unpicked the darts and the side seams to let it out and resewed the sides, and made a drawstring waist.

Then, I sewed the fastening hooks on the sari blouse and, because the neckline is wide, I sewed two small straps on the inside, at the shoulders, to hold the bra straps so they won't be seen (the straps are sewn down on one side and has closes with snaps on the other side.

It looks a bit weird on the hanger, because I had to scrunch it up to keep it from falling off the hanger.

Today, I am grateful for:
- A pleasant last day at the office
- A long and satisfying career
- The people I've worked with and the friends I've made among them
- Daughter had a safe flight home
- I finished sewing my blouse and underskirt to wear tomorrow!

How was your Friday?

  1. Wow, you are retired. How does it feel? Lots of fun things are waiting for you now. 😊
I'd like to think I'd travel when I retire. But who knows how I feel when I get to that point. But I still like to dream about it. LOL

Hope you have a great time at the wedding.

    1. It still doesn't feel real, Nil. I think it will take awhile for it to sink in. Maybe after I hand in all the paperwork (I was told to submit them in mid August). It'll be hard to travel unless I find someone to take care of Dancer.

  2. It sounds like it was a nice calm day for you. It will be lovely to be able to keep in touch with your colleagues, I think they are going to miss you. Love the clocks! ⏰
Do you have any plans for Monday? X

    1. No firm plans for Monday, other than resting and making some phone calls to schedule some appointments - doctor appointments, dental appointments, and an appointment to get the car serviced. My daughter will be home, all next week, working from home, so we might do something in the evening.

  4. Congratulations on completing another of life's milestones. While you've holidays accrued, official 'retirement' status is still a few months away, the daily drive and that list of responsibilities has gone. We're all excited to see what you choose next.

    2. Enjoy every moment of this new stage in the journey - how generous to leave bits and pieces for your work colleagues. I'm sure you'll be missed. I love the colour of that skirt. Happy days, my friend x

    1. Thank you, Anne! Apparently, tree trimmers are coming at 7:00 a.m. on Monday morning, to trim my neighbor T's tree which leans over my driveway, right outside my daughter's and my bedrooms! :D

  7. Congratulations on your retirement! What a wonderful career you've had - 35 years for the same company is quite an achievement.
I'm so happy that you will now be able to listen to your own body clock and embrace the night owl you truly are.
I chuckled when you said you almost called in sick on your last day!
    :)

    1. Thank you, Debra. Working there had been a positive experience, on the whole, but I was ready to leave. It was requiring more effort to do the same things and, although I enjoyed doing what I did, it was time to relax. :)

    1. Thank you, Suzanne. I am going to give myself this week to just relax and then, I will make plans. There are a lot of things I've postponed doing until I felt better, had more time, more energy, etc. Now is that time! :)

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. Yes, having daughter home this week will be lovely and it will help with the transition, I think. Thank you, the sari blouse came out quite well, all things considered. :)

    1. Thank you, Susan. Hope you had a wonderful time at your son's wedding, although I am sure it was a bit of an emotional time for you. Hope you enjoyed your tour of SF and hope you have a safe journey back.

  11. Congrats on your almost official retirement!! Looking forward to hearing all about your plans as you fill your free time. So exciting! Traveling and being away from home is much easier with cats than pups. You can just leave plenty of food and water out (and maybe a second litter box) and have a nearby friend or neighbor check in on them. No boarding necessary. I know you’ll find fun things to do. You’d mentioned wanting to go to the coast ... now’s your chance! So happy for you!

    1. Thank you, Carolyn. :) I've all kinds of plans floating around in my head! I need to sit down and write them all down and start planning! Some essential chores and some fun outings.

That's what I've done with Dancer on previous visits to see my daughter - left him with extra food and water and a 2nd litter box and he's been fine. He hides when people come over, so having someone check on him will be more traumatic to him than just leaving him alone, but my cousin's daughter has offered to check on him, if needed.

  12. Congratulations on your almost retirement. It is great that you have your daughter with you for the first week. It will take a little while for it to sink in and will feel strange not having to go out to work. One thing I like most about retirement is that now we are allowed to have granny naps during the day, Lol!
